  1. It's the lefties like Wilson who probably need the practice more. It can be a 270 degree pivot and straight line sprint, unlike the nice arc a righty can take. Some people make it look easy only because they practice it over and over.
  2. Agree but I'm also too lazy to do the math. On the other hand, do you want your worst OBP guy really batting last, directly ahead of your best OBP? I don't know. I could see a 9-1-2 Santana/Dozier/Mauer sequence this happening this year. Without a microscope it makes sense that the 7 or 8 spot would be where the lowest OBP guys are placed. LaRussa occasionally moved the pitcher to the 8 spot, with the idea that McGwire in the 3 spot might have a better chance of more runners on base when he came up.
  3. Is there any way to confirm the conventional wisdom that your 9 hitter should be a "second leadoff" hitter? Seems like it would make sense but maybe there's no advantage to it.
  4. Yup. And I think he only finds that in Miami or LA. That's just how he's wired. nothing personal. If Ryan can clear that salary as soon as possible, all parties will be happier for it (assuming the gaining team in the trade is happy, too).
  5. I appreciate the way you look at things. My hunch is that Ricky Nolasco's days are numbered. I'd bet he's moved before the end of the season. I liked the signing, but it's obvious Nolasco doesn't want to be here. I'm ok with Ryan admitting it was a mistake and if he can merely clear the salary somehow and just send him back home to LA or Miami.
  6. Wainwright. He is listed as 6-7. Not sure about his "lankiness" when he was Meyer's age. There are some comparable and not-so-comparable developments between Meyer and Wainwright and then Wainwright and the more recent class of young Cardinals pitchers. By these comparisons, according to a general Cardinal's schedule of pitcher development, we should expect Meyer to pitch the entire 2015 season in the Twins bullpen.* *lots of conditional factors / not all pitchers are the same / etc etc
  7. Maybe there are shoulder concerns, but that is not a reason to have him start in AAA Rochester, in my opinion.
  8. Although last spring it didn't really pan out this way. Everyone stayed healthy. The concern was that Gibson was ready to go, would pitch well in spring, and then be sent down to AAA because of options. But I thought the Twins did the right thing by bringing him north with the team. I'm not really pulling for Milone but not opposed to him either, if only because Milone has pitched to Suzuki and Suzuki swears Milone can get the job done.
  9. Agree completely. But good that integration was at least mentioned. For some ownership groups in those days, one of their recruiting tools for the best unsigned players was to swear they wouldn't integrate, that you would never have to shake a black man's hand on our team. So it went beyond just a slow reaction to the issue. Yet there are accounts that the vast majority of white players who were eventually introduced to their first black teammate had no problem with it. So it would seem these GM or owners view on race was not held by most, even then.
  10. Agree with 100% of this except for the pitch clock (so maybe just 94% of it). Like Jim Kaat said, make it about the batter. That seems to be one of the main culprits anyway, the time the batter takes between pitches. Instead of an actual clock you could just empower umpires to give the ready signal to the pitcher, that way we wouldn't have an actual ticking pitch clock to distract everyone. There's a possibility that a single spring training season of strict enforcement would get guys moving fast again, as long as MLB fully supports the umpires. Which is no sure thing. Batter up!
  11. Seems like a harsh comment but I think you began to explain your point pretty well in the intro thread. Maybe the Schuerholz selection was based mostly on a comparison of timelines and the case for him was built around that, without the benefit of open ended, face-to-face interviews. Also seems like there would be fewer surprises on the list as we got closer to the top? (Beane ranked #11 was surprising to me, ahead of Alderson even)
  12. It feels good to know at least Kaat will advocate for common sense to the commissioner directly.
  13. I'd rather see him in the MLB bullpen and traveling around with his future teammates than getting bored riding buses in the International league. He has a good attitude and probably deserves to be up just for that. I don't care if he can't throw strikes like Phil Hughes yet. Unless he goes totally off the rails I'd hope the Twins give him at least a couple months in the bullpen, even if no opportunity opens up in the rotation.
  14. I would argue that Joe Mauer has been untradeable since June 5, 2001.
  15. This is similar to what I've been thinking. Mauer is an elite hitter who probably needs less coaching. Also I wonder if not hitting in front of Morneau was a factor last season. Not because Morneau was Miguel Cabrera but that Mauer and Morneau had such a long, good working relationship, maybe just those moments of quick comparing notes during the game with someone you built trust with might have contributed to the slow start.
  16. Thin bench, thin bullpen, guys like Kinsler and Cespedes aren't very intimidating anymore, Castellanos may not be ready, JD Martinez may not hit as well as last season, and so on. Ausmus looked lost at times. Wouldn't surprise me to see these guys closer to the bottom of the division this year.
  17. With their bullpen, fielding and speed, I can't see KC slipping much below .500, but if they do, they will have that little extra motivation for 2016. I'm guessing KC has a lot of goodwill and excitement banked from last year to get their fans through a down season or two. They're still young.
  18. Daniel, were there some specific examples you know of, that shows how Sabean's emphasis on the health of SF pitchers was different and better than other organizations? It's intriguing how well they've developed starting pitching.
  19. That's the one big thing the owners have going for them. If the players don't like it, they can in theory walk away at any time. Though obviously it's not that simple for an individual to do that.
  20. Just as Selig was said to be the least horrible commissioner of the four major sports commissioners, we can hope Manfred was the least horrible option among all potential successors. Though by suggesting baseball should ban shifts, it's obvious he lacks any fundamental understanding of the game. Again we can only hope Torre and other good influential baseball people can keep Manfred from breaking too many valuable objects while he's in office.
  21. Agree. Although. Suzuki earned every minute of his playing time and every dollar of his new contract. He is the starter in 2015. Like you said though, doesnt necessarily mean it was the best thing to do to extend him. I'm sure they entertained offers though, no doubt.
  22. yeah I've been racking my brain on this question for the last half hour. I got nuthin'.
  23. Not sure about this one. The role of Yankee GM feels more like a Steinbrenner Yes man, than a baseball GM. How much influence did Cashman have in acquiring and holding into that core group in the 90s. Or somehow persuading Steinbrenner to step away from the team for a while. Also, the Yankees played hardball in public with Jeter's last contract. How much or little did Cashman have a part in that? What are the "new" Yankee owners like and maybe Cashman's evaluation would begin about now, instead of in the late 90s.
