  1. I can try to answer this for you. Because Stauffer wasn't brought on as organizational depth. He was offered a major league contract with those generous incentives. For example. Two guys the Twins used extensively the past couple seasons were Jared Burton and Kevin Correia. This year, both have been pitching for minor league affiliates on minor league contracts signed in spring training, not in December. They have both bounced around multiple organizations already in 2015, pitching mostly in AAA. Neither has appeared in MLB yet this year. They have had good careers but they are organizational depth now. Yet the Twins relied on them heavily as important contributors just last year. We hit a nice little jackpot with Pelfrey, but the next test will be how the Twins negotiate with him after the season. Yes, young guys have made the Twins lineup in recent years and some have flourished, some not. It doesn't invalidate the point that this organization seriously overvalues decline phase veterans. That could be a problem going forward with so many prospects on the verge.
  2. He's signed through 2018. He's not getting traded. My hunch is he retires after 2018 but puts together at least one more great season. Also there should be at least one postseason by that time.
  3. I also see an irrational soft spot for older reclamation guys no one else wants. (Not that I consider anyone in their 30's old.) It's a nice personal quality but a huge problem for someone in Terry Ryan's position trying to field a competitive MLB team.
  4. It looks like Plouffe has already been tinkering with his batting stance in those gifs, which are only two days apart. He typically bats more upright (I had to look at some MLB highlight videos) but is more hunched over in the Boston at bat. I think Plouffe will battle through it. Arcia had a streak like this last year. Speaking of...
  5. Good job with the mock picks. My boy Josh Graham of Oregon, the guy who wants to be a starting pitcher and then be starting catcher on his off days, was taken by the Braves in the 4th round, 120 overall. Mariano Rivera, son of Mariano Rivera, went at the end of the 4th round (Washington).
  6. Great draft preview. http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/twins-draft-preview-10-round-twins-mock-r3726 That's the guy I want.
  7. I'm not as down on the catching situation as others, and I get the sense the Twins are perfectly happy with it. Thus I've given up on the idea of seeing Pinto at all, barring significant injury to Herrmann or Suzuki, even though Pinto is the best hitter of that group.
  8. What about Plan C.... Escobar? Going into spring training I seem to remember a debate between Ryan and Molitor about what to do with Santana and Escobar. (Admittedly you really have to read between the lines in their public statements.) seemed like Ryan was ok with Santana back in CF as a stop gap and Escobar as full time SS, but Molitor's idea won out, with Santana getting a full time audition at SS and Escobar as utility. I agree completely that Santana should be moved off short. Two months is plenty of time to show something. You might have seen the game last Friday when the Jays pounded Trevor May and came back to win. Right before Donaldson's three run bomb, a Jays player hit a line drive to short which Santana (good positioning, by the way) jumped for, but didn't catch. It hit the bottom heel of Santana's glove, as opposed to the top of the webbing. Might have been one less run scored against us if Santana makes that nice catch. Little plays like that don't show up in the box score. I think Santana also got picked off by Buehrle that game too.
  9. Nice analysis, if not exactly comforting. Who were the top performers on that K rate list? Just curious.
  10. Ugh. The "not fair to the other guys" philosophy just kills me sometimes. Just my opinion. All these guys are paid obscene amounts of money to play a child's game. When they leave the playing field they will have credentials to get a job in baseball in some capacity. They should be set for life, or if not, let them scramble like the rest of us and carry their memories the rest of their lives. /soapbox There's nothing unfair about calling up Milone and demoting Nolasco to the bullpen. Better now than when Santana returns. EDIT: yeah the 6-man might be a possibility temporarily so long as it wouldn't create havoc on the routine of the other 5 guys. I'd be hesitant to change too much just yet, maybe not until they start slipping back to .500-- not sure. It's an interesting idea.
  11. I would also accept player comps to 2011 Chipper Jones and 2014 Martin Maldonado, for these reasons.
  12. All he had was a couple bad innings against the Tigers and Royals. I hope they call him back up.
  13. Mollie likes to keep his starting nine in the lineup, but it's not uncommon to need 2 pinch hitters at #9 in an NL game, not counting you might want to pinch hit for Rosario. Blech.
  14. I doubt the Twins even know how this will play out. The thing that would bother me the most is if Sano continues to rake but is held back in the minors anyway.
  15. Bring up the young guys. And we are already doing that. If they struggle, everyone will see it, and you just send them back to the minors. Admittedly there's an issue with what to do with Sano as long as Plouffe continues to play well. But Rosario had a nice game today. May pitched well. Hicks works better than Schafer for the moment as a placeholder for Buxton. Maybe Hicks even has a future in left or right. You could find room for Meyer in the bullpen if you really wanted. And so on. The home team is playing well right now but I don't think that means we completely abandon the development process for the prospect types. Those are they guys who will compose the next playoff teams.
  16. oops... Correct this will only be his second full season in Rochester. That mistake was like dropping a lazy fly ball... The better the Twins pitch, the harder it is to go to bat for Meyer (so to speak). Hopefully something clicks in his head and he finds some mental toughness and turns it around like he is capable of.
  17. This makes three full seasons with the Rochester Red Wings. If he doesn't get promoted soon, he should run for city council.
  18. Did this guy pitch with Jim Palmer and the pennant winning teams a few years later?
  19. Also, Cole Hamels has a no-trade clause against most teams in the Midwest. In other words, he wouldn't want to play here. I think that needs to be factored. I think its fair to start wondering what to do with Sano, however. The Twins love their Plouffie at third base and neither Sano or Plouffe are suited to play anywhere else.
