I can't say for certain if Raley and Cave are comparable on defense. But it looks like Raley may have an edge offensively; although he does bat left handed...but hey! He THROWS Right Handed! So there's something interesting. Maybe he is a better 4th OF than Cave. I don't know.- 86 replies

Holding Up the Bargain’s Other End
TNTwinsFan commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Questions I would ask regarding the holes to fill barring major injury: 1.Pineda to the Pen with a SP via Trade or Call up? 2. Bullpen help via Trade? Smith from San Francisco would be my choice. Another dominant left at the back end to pair with Rogers would be great to have. 3. The lineup looks to be in great shape and can't imagine messing with it much. With Sano coming back, I think Adrianza gets DFAd (pending the results of Cruz' MRI) and there is still so much roster flexibility. 4. A truly dominant RHP out of the Pen? Someone that can really shut things down. That's 2 Relievers and 1 SP to add...plenty of good young talent to trade from the Farm. Would love to see it happen!- 7 comments

Not that he pitched yesterday, but, Jordan Balazovic is starting to make some noise even in the Fantasy Baseball world! Could he be a Top 5 or 6 Guy by season's end?

Don’t Look Now but the Twins Bullpen is Pretty Good
TNTwinsFan commented on Andrew Gebo's blog entry in Around The Horn
Also...have to take Harper's ERA with a big grain of salt there...he's allowed almost all of his inherited runners to score...not a good look for 2019. -
Adrianza would be my vote to move upon Sano's return. Marwin can fill the backup SS and 2B role. Cave goes down when Astudillo returns.

Article: Is this the Real Schoop?
TNTwinsFan replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess I'm suggesting that School could be more than a stopgap...having the middle of the field solidified for a few years with Polanco, Schoop, and Buxton is the stuff of Championships. They're all relatively long and about to move into their prime years. Like other posters above have mentioned, prospects are just that until they prove themselves; go with the known quantity. I would argue that in doing so in this case, it allows the Twins Front Office to go after that much needed pitching (whatever known quantities that are available at the time.) I would also have to think that having a quality lineup and defense would go a long way to signing said known pitching quantities. If Schoop continues to produce I vote for extending him a couple years.- 30 replies

Article: Is this the Real Schoop?
TNTwinsFan replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he keeps this up throughout the year, why not sign him for a 3 or 4 year contract? Gordon is not capable of producing what Schoop or Polanco can at at the plate. It's probably going to be a couple years before Lewis is ready (not a great start to his year) nor is there a need to rush him. On a side note, I'm really liking the starting 9! I'm liking what Cron has brought to the table with his surprisingly good glove work; already mentioned what Schoop is doing; Polanco is one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now; Rosario tops even Polanco in that category; Buxton is not a black hole at the plate and is running around everywhere; Garver is destroying the ball; and oh yeah...some dude named Nelson Cruz continues to do his thing with the bat...wow!- 30 replies

Your Twins team - the batters : is this good enough?
TNTwinsFan commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
I think Kepler should be moved into the 2 hole...he takes some pretty quality ABs and sees a lot of pitches...BB% is decent too. Then just shift everyone else down one. Although, I think Buck is your starting CF over Cave. Planco Kepler Rosario Cron Sano Austin Schoop Castro Buxton -
Article: What's the Plan with Tyler Austin?
TNTwinsFan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am really interested in seeing what this young man can turn into. I like your idea concerning the DH rotation with Rosario and Cave. He could also spell Cron here and there at 1B. It seems like there really is room on the roster for him. I'll be rooting for him if he is with the club come Spring Training. -
Boom. As I've been advocating for...sign Lemahieu. Also, I would absolutely keep Kepler through his Arb years. Concentrate on the Bullpen this off season (after signing the above mentioned.) With Cleveland's sell off, the iron is starting to get hot enough to strike now. That's not to say the Twins are just a Bullpen away from making an extended run in the Playoffs in 2019, but, there's a growing chance they can win the Division in 2019. So maybe they're a Bullpen away from winning the Division? Turn 50% of those walk-off losses in 2018 into wins and they have a winning record in spite of poor years from Sano, Buxton, etc. Sign Lemahieu. Sign some legitimate Bullpen arms and make a real go at winning the Central now!

2-3 years at $9-$12 million per year sounds about right and something that might be a good way for the Twins to solidify 2B for a few years. Even if Lewis gets called up and rakes in the first year (2020) that leaves 2 years of he and Lemahieu up the middle with Polanco shifting to more of a Utility role. And I believe that timeline for Lewis may even be a bit optimistic. Lemahieu is young enough to stick around for a few years and still be pretty productive; potentially during the last three years of his peak. Do. It.
-
Upon some brief investigation, it appears last year Lemahieu suffered from trying to elevate the ball more. It resulted in more fly balls and a high HR/FB%...but it looks like he got VERY pull happy too. I believe this was to his detriment. In my uneducated, unprofessional opinion, he goes back to hittling line drives and using the whole field again and he becomes a .350+/.775 OPS guy again.
-
FYI... Lemahieu's OPS away from Coors Field 2 years prior to last year: 2017: .753 2016: .747 His away OBP those years: 2017: .352 2016: .353 Obviously those numbers get the Coors Field Bump: 2017: .396 OBP/.813 OPS 2016: .473 OBP/1.064 OPS But clearly, Lemahieu has demonstrated an ability to produce away from Coors Field. Last year may have just been a down year; coupled with his Gold Glove defense at 2B it would appear he's worth a 2-3 year contract and would help solidify the number 2 spot in the line up and provide stalwart defense at the Keystone Bag up the middle.
-
I'll give you the BA argument...but I doubt altitude accounts for 100% of the BB% delta away from Hitter-Friendly Coors Field. I don't think somewhere around .330 OBP is out of the question over a full season. Not that that OBP is anything to write home about, but, it's acceptable for a GG 2B. Considering this article's question: with the way the roster is assembled currently (with the addition of Cron at 1B and Austin as his primary backup) the Twins will be hard pressed to pick up a FA at any of the perceived open slots on the roster to replace the OBP production of Mauer and Grossman. OPS is another story though and maybe the better topic to discuss.
