  1. Wow - Bold - I like it. Grabbing some nice prospects today. When the system overflows, the team will benefit, either through producing quality ML talent, or a surplus to get more ML talent. Celestino was signed by Houston out of the DR in 2015 for 2.5 million.
  2. Lynn can go - Gonsalves has been killing it in AAA. Get him some experience now. Addition by subtraction. Duke? Why not try Mota? Mejía? Dozier? Best keep him or the fans will revolt. Most Twins fans I know read the paper and don't know a hoot about fip or war or any of that stuff. Gotta still try. Not so sure a qualifying offer for him would be so damaging after the season Dozier has had. Could rebound next season, or get a nice pick.
  3. Bringing back Sano could make this look like genius asset management if he returns to form.
  4. Here is an article on Duran. He's a big kid, 6'5", 20 years old. http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elgin-courier-news/sports/ct-abn-spt-baseball-cougars-jhoan-duran-st-0611-story.html Pretty good get imo.
  5. Bittersweet - all depends on the return. Well, they sold high, which is all you can ask of management.
  6. Twins won a WS with Brian Harper as catcher, a very good hitter who was deficient on the defense. I think Garver is better defensively, but a notch below offensively. I'd like to see the Twins turn it over to him next season, with Castro as backup.
  7. I'd rather keep Escobar and qualify him if the return is a marginal prospect or two. Clubhouse presence is often overblown, but I don't think it is in his case. The great Twins teams were known for their good chemistry. He adds a lot of versatility to the team as well. In the end you end up with a premium pick or another year of Escobar on a team that has another chance. What are the odds that the system's greatest needs, whatever they might be, will be met by trading him? I'd say slim. Better chance to address that with a top 100 pick next June.
  8. Surprised to see Britton fetch the Yankees #6 prospect per Baseball America. He seems pretty removed from his All-Star days, is a rental, and won't be eligible for a qualifying offer. Maybe there will be some desperate buyers out there after all.
  9. Well it is encouraging when someone starts off better than expected, especially a bonus pool saver.
  10. Another cool thing about Wade that bodes well for his future - he has had more walks than strikeouts every year in the minors, including 2018. Leads to some nice OPS numbers as well.
  11. I had the opportunity to tour it some years back, but never got to see a game there. It is a jewel in a great city. San Diego is certainly one of the points of origin of the "West Coast IPA."
  12. Watched highlights of the game - Gibson's 2 strike breaking ball is just sick. I think he has a plan, and he's sticking to it.
  13. That is one happy aspect of not competing this season: there will be no temptation to make a Matt Capps-like deal with a top prospect.
  14. Watching the NESN broadcast of the Red Sox tonight, they made it sound a near certainty that Pedroia was done for the season - his recovery, if rushed , could end his career, so they are preaching patience. Nunez could return to a utility role, and Dozier could do great things in Fenway. Not sure if Boston is interested, or what they might offer, but you can be sure they want to win the division above all. A late surging, Gold Glove Dozier could help them accomplish that. Getting Gordon a shot seems the logical choice.
  15. Just saw that Pedroia will not be back anytime soon. Dozier + the Green Monster could be fun.
  16. The only way anybody gets Miami to part with Realmuto is overpayment. I don't think the Twins are in any position to overpay, regardless of the return.
  17. Both Buxton and Sano are still averaging over 1 strikeout a game.... This looks weird: http://www.milb.com/images/621439/t534/180x270/621439.jpg
  18. In spite of a thread called "front office flop," these guys boss the draft. They've gotten great value in their top ten the last 2 drafts by playing slot values. About Smith - 6'2", 200 - won't turn 18 until September. Nice "international" signing.
  19. Gibson has a fairly fresh arm for a 30 year old, and he keeps himself in shape. The odds of him having another 5 good years is >> than the chance any prospect you trade him for will ever be close to what he is now. Getting rid of every decent player, which is all Gibson is, how can you develop a team with that as your mantra? All decent players of Gibson's stature get are hit/miss prospects. We can plug up the system with Palkas, Littells and Moyas until there is no room for any more. Treadmill. Get rid of the chaff - keep decent MLB level players like Escobar and Gibson and build around them.
  20. Ship off the sad sacks: at least you open up roster spots for prospects, if only we would give 'em a chance. Try to keep the keepers. I'll leave it up to you to decide who.
  21. a. I agree with maximizing value. b. I also agree that one should trade from surplus not weakness; this is not surplus. c. I agree that rewarding success with trades for prospects = more losing years. As the core we were supposed to rebuild around flails away, hard to argue with a. However, I'd rather be done with the recently acquired, the Lynns and Morrisons, rather than Gibson. Falvine's strategy was good, but the nucleus of "budding stars" let the whole team down. Dump the whole bunch of FAs acquired from last off-season and try again next year. Gibson has some long-term value. Lynn, Morrison, Duke, even Reed, they could probably be replaced internally, even though the pitchers have be at least not a wholesale disaster. I am among those who believe that Gibson has arrived, and wouldn't trade him before any of the aforementioned, and certainly not for futures. If Buxton and Sano turn it around, right back where they started from with a clean slate and bunches of money to spend next year.
  22. The Twins were 7th in all of baseball last year in runs scored, 4th in the AL. They added a guy who hit 38 home runs to DH. With a young core of up and coming players, I don't think too many people expected the team would drop to 23rd in runs scored at this point. I do suppose if they had foresight they would have traded Buxton, Sano, Kepler, Santana, Castro, Dozier, Polanco, and Mauer for better players. Yep, clearly their fault....
  23. The Twins made the Wild-card last season. Everybody agreed that their pitching needed a major boost, and the front office delivered. Hard to say Lynn, Odorizzi, Duke, Reed and Rodney are the root of the Twins problems this season. They've all been performing about where they were expected to. Can't blame them or the front office when the offense does a 180 into the gutter.
