  1. I'm not worried about that happening, Lynn still has a few weeks before the season starts. Morales signed in May, when the season was around 33% progress. I would hope Sanchez or Kinley, but maybe it'll be Vargas. The only reason he's still here is just in case Mauer/Morrison gets hurt, which I think they can risk. If not, Slegers/Enns might be next up because they don't project to be anything more than AAAA pitchers.
  2. Well, I certainly didn't expect to see this happening. I'm surprised he took the Twins deal, especially when we heard that they had offered him something in the ballpark of 2 years $20M. The rotation of Berrios-Lynn-Odorizzi-Gibson-Mejia/etc. is really solid now with Ervin due back mid May and with other guys like May and Gonsalves on the way. Tons of depth, only cost $12M, great stuff! I trusted this FO to make some signings this season even when some despaired after not getting Darvish... I say great job to Favley/Levine taking advantage of the slow market and nabbing Morrison and Lynn. Clearly the Pohlads didn't object to the payroll increasing to approximately $135M. In summary: Fernando Rodney, Zach Duke, Addison Reed, Logan Morrison, Jake Odorizzi, and Lance Lynn. That's one heck of an offseason, outside of not netting an ace. And there's still plenty of prospects in the system if they need to go out and make a big trade midseason.
  3. Really? I hadn't heard anyone talking about this and I was assuming Dozier would get $60-80M tops on a new deal. I would offer Dozier a deal in the 4 year $60-70M range but if someone's offering $90-100M, then that's goodbye. Eddie's a free agent in 2019 too so there's no guarantee he's back. I doubt they go into 2019 with him re-signed as the starter.
  4. Unfortunately (IMO) you're right that Hildenberger isn't a lock. When interviewed, Hildy said that he was pitching as if he was competing for a spot in the bullpen. I'm not sure how much we should care about spring training box scores though. Grossman is what he is at this point, I don't think a poor ST signifies anything.
  5. I have faith in Berrios and Odorizzi, and that's it. I want to trust Mejia but he's got a lot to prove.
  6. If he has another good season, which I think he will, offer him the one year compensation contract, and after he declines, let him hit FA but I'd be OK if they offered him a deal. He deserves to be paid. Offer him a deal and see if anybody else tops it. If so, the Twins could trade Gordon for starting pitching as he won't be getting a starting role then.
  7. I'm glad they're giving the backup catcher job to Garver. I think he'll provide some value on offense and be a solid pinch hitter late in games when Castro's catching. Hopefully Garver can improve his defense too. I wonder how Stuart Turner (Garver's counterpart) is doing. I see he provided -1.2 WAR of value in just 89 PAs for the Reds last year. I wonder if he'll be on the Reds 25 man roster this season?
  8. This had better be Hughes' last chance to stick on the roster, because I don't want to put up with another 5.87 ERA 1.58 WHIP with feeble K% numbers. I kinda wish the Twins could have re-signed Dillon Gee to fill that role. I think Pressly is a virtual lock as they tendered his contract. He has the potential to be a really good reliever (1.16 WHIP w/ 9.0 K/9 last year) but gave up too many runs. This is his make it or break it season - the Twins need to move on if he can't improve his game. In Spring Training, Hildenberger was talking like he wasn't guaranteed a job, so unless he falls apart in some March games, he should be a virtual lock. Rogers and Duke are locks as well.
  9. It's basically confirmed that Vargas will be gone. If the Twins can get anything for him in a trade, they'll move him sooner than later. By the way, this eventual move will open a 40 man spot. I wonder how that might be filled?
  10. Y'know, the NFL reduced their number of commercials this past year in order to increase the pace of play (no more commercials - kickoff - commercials). My main problem with commercials for Twins games is that the same 6 ones seem to play every single time... I just can't watch them anymore.
  11. I'm not sure if age is a great factor to determine if a player was rushed or not. I would determine the value on how much the player got to play in the upper minors (AA & AAA). Jose Berrios started 29 games in AAA before debuting in the majors. He was dominating and clearly ready for the big leagues, but the transition was very rocky and it took longer than expected.
  12. I'm all aboard this deal. Morrison was worth 3.6 WAR (source: Baseball Reference) and hit 38 HRs. He can slot in at DH/1B and give us a reasonable option to play 1B in 2019 if Mauer leaves. With the 1B/DH market being slow the past couple years, I'm expecting the Twins will be able to pay him a fair price. Getting Morrison ABs over Grossman and Vargas is definitely a win. This also explains why Chargois was outrighted. I'm thinking this will be the Twins last FA move, as I don't think they're going to sign Lynn or another other starters. I wouldn't complain if they did but that's just my hunch.
  13. Looks to me like the FO gave up on him and he wasn't close to making the 2018 roster. He's out of options in 2019 and who knows how much experience he'd have in the majors by then. I'm not happy to see Chargois gone especially when guys like Sanchez and Kinley are on the 40 man roster. I'd guess Falvey & Levine know something about him we don't know.
  14. He's not taking a 40 man spot and he's basically insurance in case an infielder gets injured in the next month and/or Sano gets suspended. That's all this signing is.
  15. Kirilloff at 13 sounds low compared to rankings from others, but I guess that makes sense since he's so far off and missed an entire season due to injury. I can't quite see Jay hitting the major league bullpen in 2018 unless he excels and the Twins are desperate... the kid has barely pitched any innings in the minors. Since his move to the bullpen, he pitched just 11.2 innings due to injury (and 9.2 over the fall league). I think he might need more time in the minors and prove he can succeed in the upper minor leagues. I really want Baddoo to reach the Twins just because of his last name. Here's hoping for a good 2018 for him.
  16. Yeah, I also think they're a .500 team but they'll be a few wins above .500 thanks to the poor competition in the division. They sorely need a #1 starter to be a playoff contender. I personally think they're done with adding starters (Wolfson said something to that affect). However, speaking of getting a DH, I would try to acquire Dickerson from the Rays. Now that's he's DFA'd, they're basically forced to trade him, so I think the Twins could get a discount on him.
  17. That's what I'm hoping for, but if this is the only starting pitching move they make, then that's really bad. If they sign Cobb, then then Sanchez is facing off against guys like Slegers and Duffey for that #5 spot which should only be open for about 5 trips through the rotation and that's far more preferable.
  18. Really? Hughes' numbers starting the past two seasons: 2016: 11 starts, 5.97 ERA, hitters hit .846 OPS, 5.0 K/9 2017: 9 starts, 5.74 ERA, hitters hit .875 OPS, 5.7 K/9 And he's coming off of another round of surgery... I just can't see how he could be "impactful" in the rotation. Compare that to Mejia and May: Mejia 2017: 21 starts, 4.50 ERA, hitters hit .822 OPS, 7.8 K/9 May 2015: 15 starts, 4.37 ERA, hitters hit .753 OPS, 7.95 K/9 It's hard to speculate if May could be the same in the rotation, but I think Mejia will improve off of his 2017 numbers, so I just can't see how Hughes will be better than both of them. IMO Phil looks like he's nearing the end of the line.
  19. I'm hoping to see Gonsalves by July in the majors. From what I've read, it seems he'll slot in as a #3-4 starting pitcher. Having the young core of Berrios (#2), Gonsalves (#3), and Mejia (#4) and seeing them perform up to their talent levels would be huge for this team. Now if they only had a true ace... I am concerned about the recent trend of rookie starters for the Twins. This includes Kyle Gibson (10 starts, 6.53 ERA), Trevor May (9 starts, 7.88 ERA), Jose Berrios (14 starts, 8.02 ERA). Mejia's first 10 starts were OK (4.93 ERA). The only good recent rookie starter I could find was Tyler Duffey (10 starts, 3.10 ERA) and it's been all downhill from here. The Twins will have to be patient with Gonsalves... sophomore years have been much better for our starters.
  20. I wanted to give Darvish that $100M+ contract but I do realize there is a big risk in doing so; the guys on 1500 ESPN were talking about how often $100M+ deals to starting pitchers in free agency worked out and out of 17 contracts, 6 of them were OK to great and the other 11 underperformed. You got guys like Barry Zito, Felix Hernandez (hasn't been close to worth it thus far), Jordan Zimmerman, Cliff Lee, and etc showing you how starting pitchers fall apart while in their 30s.
  21. Like, if they do nothing between now and just before opening day, that's a very big biggie. Then it would be time to panic. I don't think we've seen a big enough sample size to say they've shown "no ability" to fix the rotation. They stuck with Santana, used Santiago and Mejia (of whom were acquired at the 2016 deadline), plugged Berrios back in a month in the season, and got mixed results from Gibson. Was it a failure that they added nobody to the rotation last season? I wouldn't say so, but they probably should have added one arm as they needed Colon down the stretch. Getting Berrios and Mejia innings last year was more important than giving a mediocre starter a spot (the biggest deals for starters last year was Rich Hill 3/$48M and Ivan Nova 3/$26M). Free agency has been slow as molasses so far, but if the Twins fail to get Cobb/Lynn and don't trade for Archer/Odorizzi, then this has been a failure of a offseason for the rotation - but we definitely have not arrived at that point yet.
  22. I recall the report was "over" $100M. You may assume it was a "little" over $100M but we don't have any way of confirming it. It could have been in the $120M range just as much as around $102M.
  23. Yeah, I'd probably stick with Vargas for another year. For all the frustration he causes fans, he does deliver a passable OPS and he's a younger and simply better option than most of the FA options. However, I would consider Gomez if his price comes down.
  24. Darren Wolfson was saying Tillman might make $5M on a major league deal, and I have no idea why he'd earn close to that much with the horrendous 2017 he turned in. I'd welcome him in on a minor league deal but nothing more.
