    Well, you don't know any of your post will come true. Since he traded a good centerfielder for him, TR should be more inclined to promote Meyer, not less inclined. Another way out of mediocre starting pitching is to sign a proven veteran and not rely on prospects, particularly when you only have two for the coming season.

    It will be interesting to see if this dynamic does change. We all know that Gardy was a guy that preferred veterans but I always kind of assumed TR was in the same camp. Perhaps this isn't true and Molly will change it.

    I'm not harping on them because my belief is that there are all kinds of potential scenarios for next year that would fall on both sides of the ledger. There are so many variables with this team that we can all have an opinion and hold it reasonably.

    But wasn't he just coming of TJ? Anyway, think of it this way, if they get passed over it won't be for Pedro Hernandez, Cole DeVries and the immortal PJ Walters.

    Levi - I generally agree with your point here. I do think it is worth noting that Gibson won a rotation spot out of spring training last year.........

    Obviously we don't view this the same way and could debate the regression candidate business but here is what we know for sure - they scored the 5th most runs last year. That has to mean something and to translate that into top 10 or so next year isn't "pollyanna" - it is quite reasonable.

    I can't speak for others but....while I don't think they will end up 5th again, I think it is reasonable to think top 10 or so. There are several regression candidates but there are others who will likely do better next year....

    To complete my thoughts, I do think the development angle is more important with Meyer than May simply because of the upside. He has a ceiling that no other pitcher in the Twins organization has so that makes him more important in my estimation. As others have pointed out, the only chance we have of an ace is if Meyer fulfills his potential. May is a 3/4 type guy which are far easier to find so I don't worry about hm nor am I going to bank on him. I would give the 5th spot to Meyer out of spring training and have May be the first man up.

    I actually think most of the posters on this topic are much closer in opinion than meets the eye. I think the biggest underlying difference has to do with what each person's expectations are for next year. Cleveland was in contention for the second wild card last year well into September and they were around .500 most of the year. I think the Twins, with the addition of Santana, can do that next year. It probably got harder with the steps forward our Central rivals have taken but its not unrealistic to believe this could happen. In other words, I don't think we have to wait any longer to win some games, and we can do this while adding prospects along the way. That;'s why I'm glad they signed Santana; I don't think we are in full re-build mode anymore.

    I don't think the optimism is over the top. They had one of the best offenses in baseball last year and have a history of putting together good bullpens. With a bounce back of Nolasco and now Santana, their pitching should be much improved. Now, with the increased competition for the last spot in the rotation, we should be able to comfortably say we will get good production there as well.

    I think there is a big factor that everyone overlooks in these scenarios. Not all of these guys are going to turn into MLB caliber players, much less stars that we need to worry about huge free agent contracts at some point in the future. I wish Trevor May all the best in his Twins career and hope he wins a Cy Young. However, he is far from a lock to be a competent big league pitcher. Planning on every single prospect turning out is a recipe for failure, hence the Santana signing.

    Interesting that Scioscia spotted the problem with his mechanics but they were not fixed until he pitched for KC. Was it the new pitching coach that got him to make the changes or was it the player not willing to make the changes until after the trade? Some Worley type stuff going on here as this was the thing that Worley supposedly fixed as well.

    Yes, yes you are - good work . I, for one, hope that Meyer is the 5th starter as he clearly has the stuff to be a big leaguer, if he can just throw it over. And between May and Milone - well, one of the two will likely step forward and put pressure on anybody not performing.

    Mike, try to be more positive. I'm positive you don't have to worry about #4. Meyer or May will get the 5th spot and if the other is pitching well, they will be in the pen. Somebody else will get hurt and then the other will get some starts. There hasn't been a year in I don't know how long that the Twins weren't going 7-8 starters deep. Let's save our angst for when the Twins have so many good starters that we don't know what to do with them. Oh, and this assumes both Meyer and May turn out to be credible starters in the majors - surely not a certainty there either.

    Any contract signed in this type of free agent situation is likely going to mean that you will be unable to trade the player. There are no "bargains" when you have to outbid a whole bunch of other teams. If the player's performance declines at all from the level that earned him the contract, he is basically can't be traded.

    Well, this interesting anyway. Not sure I would have done this but it will be exciting for the fan base. I've been advocating for the younger Brett Anderson, which would have allowed us to still go after a good defensive centerfielder. My guess is this transaction ends the Twins off season.

    Sure, he has been clearly better, including one stretch his first year as a Pirate that was close to his glory days in a Twins uniform (with Andy as his pitching coach and Gardy as his manager). He also had a mediocre stretch that first year and a pretty bad stretch at the beginning of last year. So, its a variation on the same theme - you really don't know what you get with him and those aren't the kinds of pitchers you want to sign to big dollar, long term deals. I'm also skeptical that he was magically fixed in PA. I think he has a great arm and wild mechanics that will always lend itself to streaks of peaks and valleys.

    Good question - one that we will (hopefully) have to ask! He obviously thrived last year in his new environment so I am guessing that would mean something. And, since he signed here once, I am assuming he would sign again given a fair contract. Regarding Liriano, I just don't get all the love. We couldn't get him out of town fast enough the last time he was here.

    No thanks on Liriano - even with some good stretches the last two years he still had stretches where he was not good. I was of the go big or go home camp but am now changing my mind. I like going after Brett Anderson and only him, here's why: the question isn't quality. If he is healthy (I know a huge if) he becomes possibly our best pitcher. If he is not healthy, Meyer / May get more of an opportunity. The next big pitching contract I would like to see is an extension for Hughes, provided he pitches well next year.

    Like the Oliveros plan. I think he can be a good arm out of the pen, and long awaited return on the Delmon Young fiasco.

    Except that we have no evidence that Molly wanted Torii for any supposed leadership qualities. Ryan went out of his way to downplay that aspect. As you might tell, I think all the intangibles stuff is a bunch of crap. When your primary attribute is "intangibles" that is code language for "you can't play anymore". My two favorite intangibles quotes from TK: "Momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher" "Leadership is a bases loaded double"

    Not sure I follow The point I was making is that when they start talking leadership and intangibles it usually means you can't play anymore. I think the press conference proved my point on the leadership BS

    No way he left money on the table I'm sure the only reason he came here was the money.

    The only way I like this deal is if we find out later that the Twins called Colby Rasmus and he said "no thanks" or let's talk a multi - year contract. Other random thoughts: please don't listen to Torii when he says he had to "come home". What this means is that Texas, et al. offered him $5 million and TR had to double it to get him to come here. We were all waiting for when the Twins would overpay to seal the deal on a free agent - just never thought it would be Torii. I'm also not buying the clubhouse leader stuff. Basically like the baseball equivalent of "she's got a nice personality:" Will really dislike this deal if they move Arcia - he needs to stay put and see if he can learn to play where his future lies. Having pointed out all the negatives, I do have to admit that if you consider the whole package, he was better last year than anybody we trotted out there. Faint praise but it will be an improvment.
