Article: Joe Maddon is Out in Tampa. Could Twins Get Him?
Linus replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only ray of hope might be if he perceives Miinnesota to be a place like Tampa was a few years ago, where you have a pipeline of top prospects on the way. -
Coming from a TD poster? How ironic.

Article: Postseason Review: Phil Hughes
Linus replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Let's see, we were 28th in the league for starting pitching and we want to trade the only good starter we have that is signed at a bargain contract. Let me think about that a little longer to see if it comes to me.....- 19 replies

When I read Buxton 80%, I had to re-read and make sure it wasn't "what percent chance he won't play in the big leagues this year."

I like Schafer as a 4th outfielder in that he can play some defense and his speed could really be valuable as a pinch runner late in games and we need a stolen base. The guy is a machine on the base paths. In this regard, he offers something that all the other backup / filler types haven't.

The 40 man issue is very real for Kepler. When he was added last year, I'm sure the Twins were counting on him taking a large step forward. Pretty soon, that spot is going to be needed and they will have to choose.....with the talent coming up, that doesn't bode well for him.

Let's Just Roll With What We Have
Linus commented on RealTwinsFan357's blog entry in Random Thoughts About Baseball
x2. This is exactly my take on it - they can win next year. One minor quibble is Logan Darnell. What has he done to make anybody think he is a MLB pitcher? -
You are being kind....his days as a top 15 prospect are not dwindling, they are done, IMO. Doesn't mean he still doesn't have a chance but its going to be tough if the 40 man rosters spots start getting scarce to keep him there.

Thanks for doing these, Stringer. I was always an advocate of giving Parms enough consistent at bats to find out what we have. While that didn't really happen before, I think it did this year - he is what he is. At this point, if I could only keep two for my bench, I would go with Nunez and Schafer. Parm's ability to play first is really not needed now and his hitting isn't good enough to seperate him from the other two.

Article: Contemplating the Royals... and the Twins
Linus replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Disagree with Plouffe and Vargas. Plus Mauer and Arcia could be substantially better along with anybody we sign as a free agent for left field. We'll see but I don't see offense as the hurdle to contention. I guess that is my main point; and that the other major definciencies can be addressed pretty easily.- 90 replies

I understand that. But for every regression candidate, there is one just as likely to progress. They were 6th in run scored; all they have to do is hold their own.- 90 replies

Article: Contemplating the Royals... and the Twins
Linus replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This. Everyone is fixated on Sano and Buxton getting to the bigs which I get. My point is that their offense was really good this year without these two guys. By adding a good starter and a decent free agent outfielder they can really turn this around and we don't have to wait until Sano and Buxton are studs. All of this can be done without blocking anybody or entering into crippling contracts.- 90 replies

Article: Contemplating the Royals... and the Twins
Linus replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins are not that far away. Their offense solidified itself and their roster has turned over substantially. We are no longer counting on older, veteran players. They need a good starter and an outfielder that can play center of left credibly. They can patch together a bullpen between the returning guys and some of the younger flamethrowers. It they do these simple things, I like their chances to be a lot better next year.- 90 replies

This is what I mean. Whether you like him or not, Ryan is one of the most candid GMs in all of sports. You could make a case that all of what you wanted in your list has been said by him - its all in the way that you interpret his comments. This is precisely my point: the article wished for a different tone from him. I'm saying that no matter what the guy says, there will always be a contingent that opposes it. Another example: people are calling me an optimist simply because I am pointing out a phenomena that has played out time and again. In none of my posts have I even indicated if I like the guy or approve of his plan. It essentially proves my point.....
-
No, I don't have to look at his actions in this thread because that is not what the article is about. Perhaps you should re-read it. My interpretations are not charitable: they are stating something very obvious. No matter what he says or how he says it, he is going to be criticized. I don't think there is much argument there. If you think there is, better spend some time re-reading the 9000 threads doing exactly the same.
-
Obviously. The article was written about the the manner in which Ryan was expressing himself, not his track record in acquiring talent. My post was specifically addressing the point of the article which is, fans' reaction to things that are said by TR. If you want to rip into his track record, go ahead. I'm pretty sure its been done before but that's not what I am talking about.

Article: Five Twins Rebound Candidates
Linus replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The key here is that they signed him to a reasonable contract. I think TR played this one perfectly: they initiated extension talks, received inflated demands from the agent, started shopping him for trades and then signed him at their price. He can revert back to historical norms or even end up as Pinto's backup and the contract would still not be a problem.- 12 replies

Article: Left Field In Need Of Upgrade
Linus replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's the problem. With a 13 man pitching staff, you have three guys on the bench, one of which is the back up catcher, plus a utility infielder and one back up outfielder. Not much to platoon with..... -
Here's an idea.....maybe Ryan, when making statements about the team in prior years, was just giving his opinion about things. He doesn't know exactly how things should or could play out, so he is offering up how he sees at that time. Take free agency: some people act like he should just say "We are going to sign a high end pitcher". Well, he might try his best to make that happen and, newsflash, finds out that people with choices don't want to come here, even for the same amount of money. Its crazy what the expectations of fans are when it come to things that are said. Perhaps that's why most GMs won't say bleep when they have a mouthful. Because its a whole lot easier....
-
See what I mean?
-
I think the context in which the questions were asked is important. The same answer will have a different impact depending on the context of the question. I like the way Ryan is sincere about his answers. And let's be honest: he is going to be criticized no matter which way he answers the question. If he paints this optimistic picture that you seem to be wanting, others will say he is out of touch with reality and trying to deceive fans and season ticket holders.

Article: Left Field In Need Of Upgrade
Linus replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not a fan of defensive metrics as I've seen too many examples that just don't make sense. Those spray charts, however, are very illustrative and are a very straightforward way of showing the difference. With left field being relatively large in Target Field, I hope the Twins go get an athletic left fielder and don't rely on Buxton to be the only answer to our outfield problems. Arcia definitely needs to stay in right (or DH if Vargas doesn't make it). -
Article: Buxton and Sano: Maybe the Time is Now
Linus replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe what most people are saying in this regard is "prove that you are ready for the next level by showing that you have nothing left to learn or gain at the current level". Of course, nobody knows how they will do in the majors until they actually are there. If you can't do it in the minors, you won't do it in the majors. I would start Sano in AAA, and if he performs at a high level over the first couple of months, bring him up. Buxton needs longer - I doubt we see him with the Twins this year.- 97 replies
