Love the excitement this week brought to an otherwise dismal season. But several have hinted at what may be a problem, ie, can the Twins develop these kids? Granted, I am unable to watch any of the Twins games this year (tonight on FS1 is an exception), but I have been led to believe that this team makes way too many fundamental mistakes. And that is a combination of coaching (lack of) and being more interested in analytics than good ole fashioned and boring work on the field. Remember all those spring training stories about Tom Kelly working with first baseman on some play...over and over and over? Hopefully, the Twins will send the message throughout the system that they need to get to work and make these kids the best they can be. Sounds like the raw talent should be there.

Did the Twins Win or Lose the Trade Deadline?
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wonder about those above who are critical for the Twins talking about trading Buxton. We don't know the context of how that happened. As I read it, they received calls inquiring about Buxton. Well, if someone calls you are gonna take it. Doesn't mean you ever considered moving him which is what the end result was. Also agree with the general consensus that I will miss Berrios, a lot. But after reading a national report that said the Jays got robbed and Nick's piece on Martin, I am excited that the return was big...really big. As for winning or losing at the deadline, is a win for me...big one. The two pitchers from Tampa for two months of Cruz is a huge return, much bigger than most expected. Furthermore, it would not be a surprise if at least one of the two is pitching every fifth day at Target Field next spring. If the reports I read are true, the Twins won the Berrios trade even though we will miss a special young man. Who knows, maybe the Twins go out and offer market value a year from this winter and he comes home...although I agree that would be contrary to how they usually do business. As for the Happ and Robles trade, I am amazed they got anything for that duo. Yes, they had to eat an unknown part of their contracts for the next two months, but to get any return is flat out robbery...IMO. And they got an actual major league pitcher as part of the Happ return. To be honest, I don't understand either of these deals. So for me its a huge win. Yes, there were others they didn't move. But did anyone expect them to be able to move Donaldson and his huge contract? Was a bit surprised that Pineda wasn't traded. Left me wondering if they will sign him to a two year extension before the year ends. But not knowing what, if anything, was offered for Pineda and others makes it hard to say they failed by not trading someone because if the offer wasn't adequate it makes sense to say no.- 60 replies

Thanks for an excellent analysis, Nick. When comparing Martin to Lewis, is it correct that Lewis has more speed and eventually could be a touch better defensively, especially in center because of that added step? On the other hand, it sounds like Martin has the edge with the bat, although Lewis was really good last time out in the AFL. Is that also an accurate assessment? Although Martin is younger (he is, isn't he?), he will probably debut with the Twins sooner because Lewis hasn't played in two years?

Was hoping there would be one late surprise. Sounds like this email got to the MLB Headquarters at 3:59.59 EDT. Just looking at the numbers, interesting. Any return for Robles is a positive move. Gotta believe there are now a couple openings on the 40-man, although a couple of those 60-day IL may need to be activated. But as I said elsewhere, appears to be another asset for the soon to be Texas League Champion Wichita Wind Surge. As for the Twins, got to believe they are going to be a man or two short tonight.

Twins Acquire RHP John Gant for J.A. Happ
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Do we know there is a second player? And Gant isn't a prospect, he has been with the Cards for several years. Is he a free agent at years end? There is still 32 minutes remaining. Could they possibly still move Donaldson? Or Pineda?- 67 replies

José Berríos Traded to Blue Jays
roger replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sorry to see him go, will miss him. Hopefully, the return is Tampa like and both players are key parts of the 2023 Twins. Still curious if there is another prospect as the details come out. Wondering if Martin is a legit center fielder and what that means about Buxton?- 305 replies

Damn, I keep looking at that picture at the top of this piece. Remember the excitement that day when he was drafted. Recall all those winter videos of his working his butt off on the beaches back home in P.R. I understand that they can get a haul for him and it probably makes sense to move on. But what I would really prefer is that they find a way to pay the young man and he stays a Twin.......for life.

Trade Candidate Profile: Caleb Thielbar
roger replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Under team control for several years and relatively cheap. Is a lefty who can get more than lefties out. Seems to me that he should be part of bullpens for the next several years. Yes, if someone blows you away with an offer, trade him. But the chances of that happening are slim, so I count him as one of the eight opening day relievers in 2022. -
Minor League Report (7/27): Saints Hold Serve
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Rough night down on the farm with only the Saints getting the W. Great seeing Miranda back on the field after getting bonked the night before. He probably wanted some payback with two hits and a pair of walks. Will the Twins open a spot for him on their roster before this evening? See that Javier was the home run short of the cycle last night. He seems to be having lots of multi-hit games this year, something we almost never saw in years past. Even with the good start by German, the FCL Twin pitching staff again gave up almost double digit runs. But that team certainly has a trio of very interesting hitters, Pena, Baez and Rosario. Should be fun following their careers to see if they have what it takes?- 14 replies

While you all believe Berrios is gone, I don't know if that is true. Am somewhat disappointed that the Twins haven't pulled the trigger on anything other than Cruz, who got a great return. Expect they are holding their cards tight and demanding very high returns. Understand that for Berrios, but lots of other parts should already have been moved, at least IMO. Seven hours to go. Is it going to be a wild ride this afternoon? I certainly hope so as the return for Jose will never be higher if it is true that there are four or more teams vying for his services.

Trade Deadline Preview: The Los Angeles Dodgers
roger replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Berrios and another player for Gray...NO, NO, NO. Lots of folks on the net continue saying this and they are wrong, just as the Dodgers are if they think that is how they get Jose. And this is likely true, or they would have already closed the deal. Berrios is either the top or one of the top two pitchers available. He is young, durable, under control for a year after this and bloody good. To give that up for any pitcher who hasn't proved diddly when it comes to major league success just ain't gonna happen. And yes, when the Dodgers are on the phone our FO should when talking about Jose say Gray and who else? Hopefully, they are. -

Trade Deadline Tracker: Twins' News and Rumor Roundup
roger replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am as frustrated as y'all. We don't know what the discussions have been and with who. Yes, there have been lots of reports, but were the reporters in the room or on the phone? I am hopeful that the Twins have been holding firm on their demands for Berrios and perhaps Pineda as well. With Cruz gone for an excellent return, those are the two that can bring the best return. Hopefully, they will get Pineda moved later today and if Berrios doesn't get moved, he can still be moved this winter or signed to an expensive extension. As for moving the other minor pieces, they ain't gonna get much of a return. Hopefully, they can get a couple deals done to save a few bucks, open a roster spot and get an A-ball lottery ticket. -
Game Score: Tigers 17, Twins 14

Not referring to this game in isolation. Rather, the season which has had so many games with few or no runs scored along with unacceptable play in the field. This team makes way too many fundamental mistakes.- 45 replies

Minor League Report (7/28): Bombas Across the Board
roger replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Likewise wondering about the condition of Miranda after being HBP? After a home run and double, gotta ask if the beaning was intentional? Great seeing Ben get three hits after being overmatched with the Twins. Hopefully, he gets to close out the year in St. Paul to gain both experience and confidence. Very well may begin next year back with the Saints and then fill in with the Twins when needed. Contrary to most on this site, I believe Ben will have a solid bat in MLB for a long career. Great seeing Javier get three hits last night. He seems to be doing enough this year to restore some hope that he MAY eventually be an average hitting shortstop. Seth, is his defense so good to be close to another Simmons? And Wallner sure is making a believer out of me. Another question for Seth. Kirilloff's outfield defense is ok and Larnach the same or maybe a bit better. How does Wallner compare defensively with that duo who are acceptable, at best? Is he solid, or better?- 13 replies

Game Score: Tigers 17, Twins 14
roger replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This season and team has become a total disaster, an embarrassment. Yes, there are pitching problems that could have been addressed by the FO prior to the season. Yes, there have been ton's of injuries. But at some point we have to understand that this team and the players have quit. That is on management beginning with the on field leader. If I am Mr. Pohlad, at season's end I demand that a change to the on field staff undergo a total change. If the FO is unwilling to be 100% in on that decision, they also go.- 45 replies

Twins Minor League Report (7/27): Everybody Hits, Sometimes...
roger replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think Jeffers needs to be moved. Garver can be one of the best hitting catchers in baseball. Jeffers hit ok last summer, but has been terrible this year. His D is a bit better than Garver, but I would prefer keeping Mitch and his power in the lineup 90 games a year. Problem is that Jeffers needs to go on a hot streak for a month so the Twins can get something in return. But he is also young and maybe they can get something over the winter. -
Trade Deadline Preview: The Seattle Mariners
roger replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know if the Mariners will be involved, but we now are approaching 50 hours to the deadline and the only deal has been Cruz. If there are going to be another three or four deals come Friday, the FO better get on the phone and close at least one today.- 2 replies

I have always thought there was a real possibility Lewis would slide over to third base when he arrives. I also was assuming Buxton would be here long-term and stay somewhat healthy. Yes, prospects aren't proven big leaguers until they get it done at Target Field, but I expect Miranda may have eliminated that option for Lewis. Will now be shocked if Miranda isn't manning third for years to come.

Twins Minor League Report (7/27): Everybody Hits, Sometimes...
roger replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It is unbelievable, almost, but the Saints scored 16 runs and weren't the highest scoring team in the organization last night as Wichita put up 18!! Miranda gets three hits, which is almost becoming the norm. But what many of you may not have noticed is with a two hit game Rortvedt is now batting .300 for the Saints. Yes, not a lot of at bats, but this kid would likely have begun his season at Wichita had the Twins catchers not been so beat up. Yes, his hitting numbers were terrible for the Twins, but after not playing at all last year and then beginning this year with the Twins that was to be expected. That experience also helped him now that he is back where he should be in his development track. Have always believed he would have a solid bat to go with his top notch defense. Also nice games by the Mussels and Kernels with Varland throwing another five shutout innings. With another three hits and two round trippers, is it time for Wallner to get in his car and take that seven hour drive down I-35 to Wichita? -
Like your moves, Jeremy. Although I do believe that the Twins will get more back for Pineda, before resigning him after the season as you indicate. I am in the camp that also doesn't see a Buxton trade. Also think that Berrios will stay put unless the return is HUGE, more than you envision. Totally agree with your thoughts regarding the Rule 5. Question? If the CBA expires at the end of this season and they are battling getting a new one in place, will there be a Rule 5 this year?

Scouting Twins Prospects: Jose Miranda
roger replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Count me among those who want to see him get a cup of coffee come September. Good chance for him to learn what it is like so he can work on things this winter and return to the Twins come opening day. Will he hit as well in the big leagues as he is now? Great question and the answer may be no. But that doesn't mean he won't be a very good hitter. And who knows, he just may continue shocking people and be this good in the future. Arraez, Larnach, Miranda and Kirilloff might be one heck of a top of the order for a long time. -
Twins Minor League Week in Review: Second Half Success
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks for another excellent update, Seth. Great seeing all four teams with nice records. But the FCL team sure has problem winning games and many of the losses are by huge scores. Expect that could soon change as some of these draft picks get involved. Talk to me about Gabriel Maciel. I know he came over to the Twins in one of those trade deadline deals a few years ago. Don't remember which. Really nice week with his bat. Has he been hitting well all year and could be expected to continue as he moves up the ladder? Does he have good speed and is he an above average outfielder? I know he has been around for awhile, shouldn't he be expected to be past Hi-A by this time? Or with the off year last year is this about where he should be? Any word, Seth, on the status of those injured pitchers, Canterino, Enlow and Duran? Kind of interesting thinking about the over/under for the number of trades before Friday afternoon. I would put it at 2.5 (not including Cruz)?- 14 replies
