Looking at the Saints box score today got me thinking about Jermaine Palacios. I was impressed with his defense in his brief callup with the Twins. He continues to hit around .270+/-, which combined with better than average D makes him a legit future big league shortstop. Maybe not a starter for a contending team, but certainly someone who is competent and won't be a hole in the batting order. As the Twins FO looks forward to 2023, I expect that if Correa opts out they will go with Lewis as his replacement. I also suspect they are comfortable with Palacios handling the job until Lewis is ready to return, whether that be in May or July. Palacios certainly had value in Tampa's eyes when they took him in return for Odorizzi. Twins got a huge break when he struggled while with Tampa, was released and signed back with the Twins. Should pay big dividends if he is in fact their starting shortstop on opening day.

Tough day for several of the top pitchers, Balazovic, Varland and Povich. Biggest concern has to be Balazovic. Jmlease above discusses significant concerns about the former top prospect. What I find exciting this year is the play of the DSL Twins. After a brutal 2021 season when they were very young, this team is now 10 games over .500. Best of all, I counted six batters hitting over .300 in a league that historically has few .300 hitters.

Post Draft: Who's the Twins' Top Pitching Prospect?
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Aren't you a couple weeks early in doing this analysis, Cody? Doesn't make sense to even talk about Priellip until he is signed. If the kid really is good enough to have been considered top 10 in the draft, the Twins may not have the $$$ to get him signed. I hope like heck that they have had enough of a conversation and know that he will sign for $2.something. But considering he wasn't expected to drop as far as he did it is unlikely those talks would have gone too far. A top 10 pick in 2023 might be what, $5M or a lot more. So until he is signed, doesn't make a lot of sense to include him in any ranking. As for Balazovic, I just don't understand what the heck is wrong this year. For a good part of last year he was unhittable. Then he wasn't and struggled later in the summer. With his injuries and ups and downs, don't have a clue what his future holds. He may become an absolute ACE, or he may never throw a pitch in the big leagues. Bloody disappointing if you ask me. Hopefully, there will be a couple of the guys we are talking about gone by the trade deadline. Combined with the unknown surrounding Priellip and it makes a lot of sense to me to talk about his after August 2. [edit. I hope I my concern is proven wrong and you post news about Priellip signing later today.]- 31 replies

How many years have we been reading about the Twins trading for Thor? Whether it is during the offseason or at the deadline, seems to be forever. And look what he has become? Not worth a heck of a lot and I for one wouldn't touch him at any cost. Another great example of why most of the trades for top of the line pitchers aren't a good deal for the acquiring or signing team in free agency. Got a feeling our FO agrees, which is why we don't see them giving the long-term deals most people want to pitchers. There are bloody few Justin Verlander's out there, and he even took a year off recently. But I can't believe what he is doing now that he is back.

Seems that almost every time out, I find myself asking why he doesn't get more innings. Then the next day he is sent back to St. Paul. Why? I would like to see this kid stay in the Twins pen as a second lefty and get the experience he needs to be a solid reliever next year and beyond.

Get to Know Twins Draft Pick Andrew Cossetti
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
What a fantastic outlook for someone as young as he is. Really impressed, and will second Dman's comment that I too wanted the Twins to take a catcher, or two, high in the draft. Maybe good things do come to those who wait and the Twins may have waited ten rounds to get the right man. -
Get to Know Twins Draft Pick Brooks Lee
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great seeing them get the top pick signed and I for one was fearful it was going to require more than $75k over to get it done. Now they can get to work signing all those guys in the top 10 rounds to pick up the dollars it is going to cost to get the pitcher from Tomah signed. Hopefully, a bit over $2M will get it done. -
Thanks for the report, Andrew. Will double down on the above comments about Williams and catching, in general. With the catching situation for the Twins and upper levels, have thought the Twins are in a terrible situation behind the plate. Maybe there is more in the pipeline than I was aware of. Will second the above comments about Mercedes and how well he is doing. Looking at yesterday's box score from the DSL Twins got me wondering, however, is pitching in the DSL exceptionally bad this year? If memory serves, there were usually very few hitters on the DSL Twins with averages above .300. Looking at the box score, seems that nearly all of them are above .300. Seth, have you noticed how much better the Twins kids are hitting? Are hitters throughout the league hitting much better? Or is it just that the Twins have a special group this year?

Get to Know Twins Draft Pick Kyle Jones
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Loved his last comment, thanking his family for being there for him throughout his journey. Every year there are a few pitchers drafted well after the first couple rounds who make a name for themselves. You know, guys we normally see dominating hitters in Cleveland or Tampa or Miami. Can Kyle Jones become that pitcher for the Twins four or five years from now? -
Certainly hope the Twins don't trade away the farm for a chance at success this October. The needs are just too great. I do hope they do at least one smart trade for a younger, proven reliever with at least two years of control. Someone that can be a solid late inning guy this year and the next couple when they should have a better chance to contend. That combined with some good health to starters and a couple relievers returning from the IL and who knows what happens. As for catcher, would support a similar move for a quality younger player who would be a 2023 and beyond backup who could battle for a starting job.

Trade Target Tracker: RHP Pablo López

Trade Target Tracker: RHP Pablo López
roger replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting article in today's STrib. Talked about three possible plans by the FO going into the deadline. One, fine tuning which basically means adding a reliever, or two. Second, all in which would also add a top level starting pitcher, plus a couple relievers. Third option would be to sell, including trading Correa should he confirm he is opting out. Personally, think the article is right on and the first option will be what the Twins choose. They probably aren't a strong contender for winning anything come year-end, thus, spending a lot of capital to go all in doesn't make sense. Better to fine tune and add for next year and beyond, when they could be very good. Trading Correa probably isn't a good decision as it would be a terrible signal to the team and fans/ticket sales over the next two months. -
Twins Appear to Trend Towards Pool Savings on Day 2
roger replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Kept watching to see who they picked. Didn’t know anything about any, but saw that most were ranked to be picked lower than taken. Told me the Twins got two studs at the top and were working to get the X millions more to sign them. Should they get two good starters from this draft and nothing else, it is a great draft. -
Twins Select Connor Prielipp at #48 in the 2022 MLB Draft
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
What is the Twins total dollar pool and how much can they go over without losing future picks, is it 5%? So if they have another $500k, that would put them up around $2.1M they could pay. Gotta expect they had discussions with he and his agent and know what it will take to sign him and they believe they have that ability. -
I remain hopeful that they will get at least two catchers later today. And hopefully, one of them will turn out to be both a good one and fast mover.

Twins Select Tanner Schobel at #68 in the 2022 MLB Draft
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Know nothing about this kid, but I for one am waiting for them to draft a catcher. Heck, more than one and higher than the last half of the draft. Catcher is the organization's biggest need and they need to address it during the early part of this draft. -
Twins Select Connor Prielipp at #48 in the 2022 MLB Draft
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Like many above, my main concern is whether he would choose to return for his senior year and a shot at ++$5M. On the plus side, the Twins are 2.5 hours up the road from his hometown and family. Heck, his family may have been Twins fans growing up, although the Brewers are more likely. -
Really want the Tech catcher to fall to #8 and the Twins get a top 7 prospect at a position of need. That would be doubly good, IMO.

Minnesota Twins 2021 Draft Retrospective
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Excellent recap Jamie, thanks. Didn't realize they had done as well last year as it appears. Hopefully, they will hit it out of the park again this year and have a couple great classes, back-to-back.- 7 replies

What is Sano's future with the Twins? It isn't likely they will exercise their option for 2023, will they? If that is a given, the best for the Twins would be for him to go on a tear in St. Paul this coming week, then join the Twins and rip the ball for a week. Maybe, just maybe there is some team out there who would give the Twins something of value for his big bat? Looked at Palacios' numbers and like them. I am of the opinion that he will do a decent job at shortstop for the Twins the first half of 2023 while waiting on Lewis' return. That's assuming Correa opts out, which is an unknown at this time. See that the youngest Acuna is heating up down in the DSL. Has been hitting better this month after a brutal start to his career. Cannot be happier for Urbina after sitting around and doing nothing while held up by the immigration folks. Always wonder why these things happen, and sometimes I guess S...... just happens.

I don’t understand Balazovic. His stuff appeared to be too good for these results. Is he dealing with an injury? Is it mental? Many of us were hopeful he would pitch for the Twins later this summer. Now have to wonder if he ever will pitch for the Twins. Has to be the biggest disappointment this year.

Great seeing Escobar with another solid appearance. Have liked his potential since his great year in the DSL as a 17 year old. Does it seem like Miller gets a walk or two nearly every game? what a year for Julien, Wallner and E-S, eh?

Twins Daily Draft Preview: Brooks Lee
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Interesting, and a great first name for someone playing the left side of the infield. How can he not be special, eh? Seems different/better than some of the power bats the Twins have drafted recently, guys with little to no chance of playing defense. Good news is that we will all know what happens in four days. -
I think to call me a believer may be a bit strong as my view has changed to more hope that he can still make it. Has he been available for the Rule 5 draft the past two years? Or is it three? Expect he will be a minor league free agent at year's end, if not last year. Would love to see the kid find some success and for the Twins to get something in return for their $4.1M investment.

Will second Dman's comment about seeing Urbina back on the field and hitting well. With all the talk about catchers, or lack thereof in the organization, great seeing Olivar get another hit and a walk. Kid seems like he could have a good bat, although he is a long ways off. Will also second Dman's comment about Povich. Expect nearly every team in baseball needs more pitching, hopefully, this kid will be part of a future Twins rotation. Unfortunately, he can't get to Target Field soon enough. Is Wander Javier hitting better of late? Seem to see his name mentioned more often with multi-hit nights and/or a home run or some other good mention about his bat. The little I have seen of him defensively, he looks solid at short. Is there still a chance for this kid?
