Are Reinforcements Close Enough for the Twins?
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Keep being amazed when reading daily box scores about other team pitching. I know Wainright has been pitching for the Cards forever. But yesterday some guy named Montgomery threw a complete game 1 hit shutout. Don’t recall knowing anything about him, but where do the Cards keep getting these guys. The Twins don’t seem to find ‘em. And if they did they wouldn’t let them pitch more than 5 innings anyway.- 41 replies

Leadership Seems Lacking as Twins Look Lifeless
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know if this last ten games or so run will be the beginning of the end of this season. I do know that the team feels lost, defeated, at least from someone watching games on tv. Expect they will lose all three in Houston, but then one never knows until the games are played. On the other hand, they are 2 games out of first and play lots of games against the Indians and Sox. Win against those two in September and they could move on to the playoffs. What is interesting to me is that every morning I review the box scores of all the games over coffee. What I find disappointing is that the Twins have been in first place much of the summer and yet, their attendance is a very disappointing 22,500 per game. Should they get the slide in fans coming out as is normal after school starts, their average for the year might be a disappointing 20,000-21,000. Don't know why fans aren't going? Do know why my wife and I haven't gone to any games this year. When we were younger we went to 5-6 games a year. None the last two or this year. There isn't any player I really want to see like back when Puckett and Hunter were patrolling center. Love Buxton, but its 50-50 at best we would see him. Won't go to night games cause they are too late and no way do I want to be walking around anywhere in downtown Minneapolis after dark. I guess my point is there is something missing. Where is the excitement on the field and in the stands?- 47 replies

Leadership Seems Lacking as Twins Look Lifeless
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Leadership must come first and foremost from the Manager and to a lesser extent his coaches. But they also need at least one veteran player to be 'that guy.' For years it was Puckett, then Torii Hunter. Although he was their best player, doubt Mauer was ever the personality to take that role. Perhaps it was Morneau or Cuddyer after Hunter left. But they need someone and it isn't going to be Correa who has one foot out the door. Probably should be Buxton, but like it was said above, hard to be that leader when you aren't in the lineup a lot of games and limited to DH about half the time you are playing. Plus, not certain he has the personality to be that. Could, I just have no idea.- 47 replies

Thanks Nick for another great read. Is this the best Twins related story this year? With Lopez returning for at least two years and hopefully, a healthy Alcala in 2023, the pen could be awesome with just one or two more adds. No question had the bullpen been better the first couple months of the season the Twins would have a comfortable lead in the Central.

Was reading the Strib over coffee earlier this morning. Looking at Wichita-Cedar Rapids-Mighty Mussels, I saw that all are 60 some wins to 40 some losses. Collectively, they were roughly 50 games over .500. I know that winning in the minors doesn't guarantee a number of top level players will show up for the Twins a few years later, it sure is nice seeing those three win a lot of games. Saw that Austin Martin has been hitting better since his recent return from the IL. Is it possible that his early season struggles were injury related? Do any of you guys with those contacts know if that was part of the reason for his struggles?

Can Simeon Woods Richardson Be Better Than Jose Berrios?
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Can he be better, you betcha. Will he, that's another question. And unfortunately, looking at what Jose is doing this year he doesn't have to be fantastic to be better. Did the move to Toronto and away from the team he grew up with have such an effect on Berrios that he isn't the pitcher he was here? -
Minor League Report (8/20): A Whole Lotta Games
roger replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Good seeing Noah Miller with 2 hits yesterday. Has been a long first season of pro ball for him, hopefully, he can finish strong. See that Acuna had another two hits yesterday and is hitting well over .300, after hitting .077 his first month. Could he be anything like his brother? Also saw that eight of the batters in the DSL Twins lineup yesterday are hitting .294 or better. Don't know what to make of these kids in that league this year? Assume the Twins are limiting Enlow's workload his first season back from TJ. Makes sense to use him an inning here and there as the season winds down. Really want to see SWR have a very good start for the Saints today, please, please, please!- 4 replies

Twins 3, Rangers 4: Twins Bats Struggle Again
roger replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tough loss. Only watched from the 5th inning on, lots of opportunities to win this game. Hopefully, they will stay in the race until the last week of the season, then play like champions. Thought they needed to win 3 of 4 against the Rangers. Still can, will they?- 34 replies

Minor League Recap (8/19): No-Hitter, No Problems
roger replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My question regarding Gossett, does he have any future with the Twins? Great seeing a very solid outing from Varland. But the real story for me out of St. Paul was Palacios getting three hits. This kid is hitting better than many/most of us expected and really should be considered the leading candidate to start the year at short for the Twins should Correa opt out. Would give him several months to prove he belongs before Lewis is ready. Then may the best man win the spot for the balance of the season. Great seeing the FCL Twins trot out a group of 2022 drafted pitchers for an inning. Still anxious to see Prielipp get his first appearance.- 14 replies

The Twins Have a Long Man... Or Not
roger replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In no way will I defend or try to explain this staff's use of the bullpen. But there may have been a reason to bring Sands in for that late inning of mop up. Someone may have this at their fingertips, but I believe Sands hadn't pitched in four or five days. So he needed work and they may have viewed it as similar to a bullpen session. Unfortunately, doing that means he isn't available the next day and there is no way of knowing when they are gonna need that long guy. Hopefully, he is considered their long guy. What they think/do, however, is impossible for any of us to understand.- 31 replies

Will second the above comments about Gio. Also believe that Miranda just might keep hitting like he has. with that said, am going to throw two more players into the mix. A healthy Trevor Larnach playing like he was before the injury would be huge, especially with AK out for the year. The other name is Sandy Leon. Love his D and how he handles the pitching staff. Just might be worthy of being relatively high on this list. Also love how he has gotten those bunts down in key situations.

Cedar Rapids gets one hit and wins, 1-0, in a game that lasted 2:02 hours. There may be something special brewing down in the DSL. Mercedes, 17, Acuna, 17, Rodriguez, 17, and Pena, 18 are all hitting around .300 or better. And that's in a league that if memory serves hasn't had a lot of .300 hitters over the years, at least from the Twins teams. Acuna hit .077 in June and now has his average up to .313 with a .818 OPS. Mercedes OPS is .969 and Rodriguez, .989.

Who is the Twins 2022 Rookie of the Year?
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will go along with those who have Miranda over Duran, who is close. I also believe that Miranda should get strong consideration for League ROY, especially if he keeps hitting like he has. He has what, 100 ab's less than several on the team and very possibly will end the year with the most RBI. Kid seems to be at another level when there are guys on base. Loved the comparison the other day during the game when they were showing his batting form compared with Pujols. Interesting, very interesting. Also believe that Miranda has improved his defense since the year began, especially at first base. I guess that makes sense as many of his early mistakes were mental based on his minimal experience at first. It may be a year early for an extension, but I want this young man to play at Target Field for his entire career. Now let's get Lewis, Larnach and Kirilloff healthy and won't that be exciting to watch.- 32 replies

Great seeing SWR promoted to the Saints, and Martin back in Wichita. Hopefully, his production will improve the last month of the season. Expect Enlow is pitching in relief to limit his innings coming back from TJ surgery. Good seeing him have another solid outing. After a more than disappointing season, great seeing Balazovic have a game like last night. This was his best start of the year, wasn't it? Recall that his last outing was solid, can he keep this up over the next month? Still waiting for Prielipp to get his first turn on the mound.

Twins Minor League Report (8/16): Wind Surge Blows Away Tulsa
roger replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great seeing SWR have a game like last night. Believe that this kid can and will be special. Saw that Wichita put up 17 runs and when I checked the box score couldn't believe my eyes. With 17 runs on the board, Julien was 0-5? Good seeing Acuna with another big game. After missing a few games, great seeing Mercedes back with a 3 hit night...or I guess day game down there. And like Dman, I couldn't believe what I was reading when I read about the Saints game over coffee this morning.- 23 replies

Do Any of the Top Free Agents Fit in Minnesota?
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No, no, no and no. What the Twins need this offseason is one or two really good short relievers, preferably two. If Correa opts out, as expected, go with Palacios until Lewis is ready then play whichever of the two plays best. Everything else can be filled by internal candidates, including the starting rotation. What they need to do with their money this offseason is to extend several of their current players....beginning with Arraez, Mahle, Gray and Fulmer. Maybe sign whomever finishes the season best, Bundy or Archer, to a one year deal.- 47 replies

Please, please, please let this be the start of a nice 7-8 game winning streak. And hopefully, a couple of those hitters who have been capable in the past will heat up and start punishing the ball.

Twins Giving Pagan a Leash to Hang Their Season
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I watch Pagan and think, damn, this guy is really good. Until he isn't. Seems he often does great until a guy gets on base and the next puts one into the seats. Not going to get into even thinking about the comments above related to Rocco's management of the pitching staff as I would like to enjoy my day. -
Minor League Report 8/14: Will Holland Makes History
roger replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Holland's inside the park home run and Lee's huge day got the headlines. But Julien's 3 hit game following yesterday's 4-4 game hardly gets a mention. So happy that Lee is starting his career on fire and hope like heck he is special. But Julien is so close to helping. That tops my wish list for the Twins.- 16 replies

Previewing 3 Club Options Facing the Twins
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree with you and the above comments, Sano should be gone and Gray MUST be signed to an extension. What you do with Bundy will depend on who is managing the club in 2023. If the current staff returns, Bundy's option should be exercised and the team should go to a four man rotation with three or more long relievers pitching 2-3 innings after the starters are limited to 4-5 innings. If the Twins change on field management and use their starters like the rest of baseball, then bringing Bundy back is less desirable.- 53 replies

I was so excited after the moves they made at the trade deadline. Mahle seems to be a good move and Leon has been a remarkable find. But both of the relievers have not only helped fix the bullpen problems, they both have been huge short-term disappointments. Will agree with those that talk about the team playing like a team that has given up. Don't know what the fix is, unfortunately it seems that the manager and coaching staff doesn't know either. Looked at all the box scores in this morning's Strib. Saw that the vast majority of starting pitchers yesterday pitched 6 or more innings. But not the Twins. Unfortunately, the pitching staff wasn't constructed to have starters go twice thru the order and be done. Listening to Baldelli on the pre-game show Saturday, heard him actually mis-speak and correct himself when he mentioned 6 innings for a starter. Gotta believe that in his mind pitchers SHOULD NOT pitch to batters, any batter, more than twice. If the Twins are going to be the only team in baseball to have all starters limited to 4-5 innings, then why not go to a four man starting rotation? Back that up with three relievers who pitch 2-3 innings every third day and the bullpen wouldn't be so chaotic and overworked. Unfortunately, that change needs to be made over the winter and in spring training. It may be easier in my mind to change the coaching staff and get someone who understands how everyone else is playing the game. Yes, if this is the beginning of the end for the Twins this year, if they have quit, I believe the FO needs to change the on field leadership this winter.

Moran was at his best again. Seems he dominates a game, until he doesn't. And then it isn't because he gets hit, rather because of walks. If this kid can improve his command just a bit, he could be special. And we all know how badly the Twins need a few more relievers. Will be fourth man in jumping on the Julien bandwagon. When you think you have seen it all, he puts up a night like last night. Trying to think of a former Twin he reminds me of. Keep thinking a faster version of Brian Dozier. Maybe not 40 home run power, but if he hits 20 this year maybe? Don't know where the Twins play him in the future because I expect they will be keeping Polanco at second and they had better extend Arraez for the next 5-7 years. He isn't a shortstop and Miranda has third locked down. Guess that means they had better start working him into the outfield.
