    I think the Twins have scouts down in Caracas with some Disney producers watching the spin rates on Molotov cocktails. A reboot or sequel to Million Dollar Arm incoming.

    Does this really qualify as breaking news? Granite had become an afterthought. He was redundant as another LH outfielder behind Rosario, Kepler, Cave, and Wade. I would put this in the category of "Other Minor League Notes".

    Arraez seems to be getting pretty much ignored here. Whether his amazing hit tool can be the thunder that pushes Gordon to realize his potential or allows him to surpass Gordon as at least the temporary heir, I think he should at least be recognized as more than just a 40-man addition. Otherwise, this yet another great article in this series.

    Are the Twins done with extensions this spring? I was hoping for a Berrios deal, especially with framework available from the Nola and Severino deals. Everything has been quiet though. Is Berrios just going to wait and attempt to put up more of a Nola or Severino-esque season before inking?

    With Gonzalez, Torreyes and even Schoop available depending on the circumstances, I hope Tyler Austin is also battling Adrianza for a 25 man spot. I hope he gets as long a look as possible, because the man has plus, plus power. It would be almost a no-brainer for Miami, Detroit or KC to pick him up and play him every day, so he isn't sneaking through, IMO.

    Is Schoop going to be QO eligible after 2019? If he has an AS-type bounce back season, is that going to be on the table? I'm in the "show me" camp as well with Gordon, but if he answers the call, the Twins could have a good problem on their hands and positive tough decisions to make.

    I don't think we disagree on very much, if anything. My initial post was a reaction to this specific line from the mailbag article: "I don’t think it will matter if the starter is Jose Berrios or someone at the back end of the rotation." Everything you are hitting on makes sense. Using an opener for Jose Berrios doesn't make sense, just like opening for Snell didn't make sense for the Rays. I'm taking it one step further in saying that it should never be an option for a top of the rotation starter that I'm at least hopeful Berrios will be.

    Not afraid of the opener .... Just think it is poor strategy, bad baseball and less fun to watch when the primary pitcher would be someone like Gibson or Berrios .... You're basically just wasting a bullpen arm right out of the gate, when either of those guys is probably a better bet than the likely opener. Berrios doesn't seem like the kind of player that would buy into this. He might give the lip service to his manager, but that is about it. If I was him, I would tell my agent to suspend all extension talks until he's guaranteed to start his games. Take a look at the Twins bullpen and tell me who you would sacrifice as a high leverage option and then still prefer over Berrios against the first three batters in a game (even if they are all left-handed). Berrios wasn't the one gassed or injured at the end of last season. It was the likely opener fodder (Hildenberger, Moya, Reed, Mejia).

    If Baldelli uses openers for Berrios, that's going to be a negative Mark in my book. I get it for Perez and probably even 5 inning Odorizzi and comeback trail Pineda. Berrios should pull a Bumgarner and walk right out of the stadium. As a fan, I'd like the opportunity to see him throw a complete game shutout or maybe get his first no hitter. Gerrit Cole is right. No one, except statheads, wants to watch a *@$# math equation.

    I probably should have further qualified my statement with "in the Twins market and considering the self-imposed payroll cap that ownership seems to have in place" ... If payroll was expanded, then I would agree that the conversation completely changes.

    Great write up. Great series. Thanks! I'd rather not go to Florida during the summer, but these top four prospects may be good reason for an exception.

    I wouldn't call 2018 a down year. I'd call it a decline year. AAA or opt out is more likely. I agree with Thrylos. No need to platoon Cron when the difference between him and a declining Duda will be negligible against RHP.

    Miller stated he was getting his salary doubled in year one, so that would be $6.25 mill ... That leaves 4/$28.75mill the rest of the way, which means the raises would have to be modest until the option year. I'd like to see it spelled out as well though.

    True, but if you pay Harper $30-35 mill per annum in the Twins market, then you have to get by with pre-arbs and retreads around a good portion of the rest of the diamond to afford him. Kepler's deal allows for more balance, and it also isn't an immovable object or uneatable meal, if it doesn't work out.

    I completely appreciate your reply, Tom. I also appreciate all the work and writing you do. I think we probably disagree on verbage. I'm totally nitpicking here, but it's something that as a reader I have to communicate. I would use "developing story". I think it just helps guide the reader better. This is a big deal, especially since it's probably the first money on the books for 2019 and the first long term investment in the "new core". I hope feedback is appreciated even if not agreed.
