  1. i missed this article last week. Too much else occupying my time. But very well written and researched. Plenty of interesting variables and skills touched upon. I love reading articles like this, ones that make you look at a player from a different perspective.
  2. Yeah, the weather factor ... is a factor. As Brock suggest, we need to wait another month before jumping to conclusions and tidy observations. But one thing I am in agreement on: Fernando Rodney is an unpredictable closer!
  3. Just based on what I've read, I'm excited about Ben Rortvedt and his prospects of making the big league club as a starting catcher in a few years. Good to see him off to a great start!
  4. Nick, in the article you wrote: " ... the potentially career-altering PED suspension for Jorge Polanco – Dozier's possible heir apparent at second – could change things." What do you see specifically as "career-altering" about Polanco's suspension? It's not like he's coming back from a horrible injury. Maybe he's a bit rusty the first month, but I don't see how the suspension will affect his subsequent performance. It seems like many players return from such suspensions and perform as good, if not better, than they did before. Ervin Santana and Dee Gordon are two examples I can think of right off the bat.
  5. I read the one paragraph three times, but I'm still confused: What is it about Romero that is "somewhat of a surprise" ?
  6. Man, that certainly is a very impressive team of prospects. For a AA team they almost look too good for the league! Excited to see what they can do this year.
  7. Another fascinating and entertaining installment, Matt. Thanks very much for all the research and effort put into writing this column. I love taking these trips down Twins Memory Lane!
  8. Sure it's early days and no doubt there will be a few rough games ahead ... but wow! Very pleased to see the way the starters pitched the first three games. I'm, uh, feeling optimistic all of a sudden!
  9. Well, this whole discussion is going to get tiresome, especially if it goes on all year. I don't fault Dozier for wanting to explore free agency. At his age, it's now or never for him. And as a few people have pointed out, the idea of him being "faithful" to the Twins and wanting to stay with the team is naive. But on the other side of the coin, I won't fault the Twins front office for thinking that they will be taking too big a risk by signing him to a multi-year extension or new contract. It may be best for both parties to move on. I really can't get worked up about it either way.
  10. And let's not forget Lyman Bostock, whose promising career was tragically cut short.
  11. I agree; great article, Nick. I especially liked the insight into the front office and how they are using the new analytics along with having some ex-players around as veteran presence/mentors/whatever. It's a good mix. Like many on this board, I'm VERY excited about the Twins this season. Please, please, please, don't let me down guys!
  12. the truth is Gibson benefited from facing weak offenses in those starts, as not one of his eight opponents ranked higher than 19th in runs scored. Yikes! I hadn't realized that Gibson had faced so many weak lineups during his hot streak late last year. Nevertheless, I remain cautiously optimistic that maybe he DID finally discover some magic extra something, and hoping he can start the season off on a promising note.
  13. Yeah, Rodney didn't do much to impress in Spring Training. Hopefully, those old joints just need some time to get loose! But I still remain wary of him and how he'll do as the team's closer over the course of the season. Please ease my worries Fernando!
  14. Yeah, with that extra spot open on the 40-man roster, if would make sense to find another infielder. As theLeviathan noted, with the current situation things do indeed look thin, especially after Aybar was released.
  15. While we are rocking the beat, I noticed that the Yankees had a J. Hendrix in the lineup today!
  16. There is always a lot of uncertainly during the course of the season. Poor performances combined with injuries, creates the need for calling up replacements. But after what looks like several astute signings this off-season, I just hope there isn't as much need to call up so many arms from the minors (or elsewhere, like picking up castoffs like Colon) during the season ... at least at not as much as last year. The body count got a bit ridiculous by late summer (okay, those 26-man double headers helped to increase the count also, but still ...). Hoping that guys like Romero, Gonsalves, and Thorpe thrive in the minors this season and are ready to contribute to the big league club in 2019.
  17. Very good write-up! One passage in particular struck me: There are forces working against Sano – some of his own making, others not. But he is young enough to overcome them and put them in the rear view mirror. Sano certainly is still quite young, so perhaps a new found sense of maturity and responsibility, combined with (another good suggestion someone just made) paying more attention to his diet will enable Sano to "shape up" in all respects and consistently give us the player we expect him to be. Gotta keep hoping. When it's all clicking this guy is a force to be reckoned with.
  18. I recall those years not so long ago when the "aces" we were replying on to compete were guys like Carl Pavano and Kevin Correia. Pause to shudder. This season is cause for MUCH more optimism!
  19. Another great installment of the Almanac, bringing back lots of great memories, and giving me a few big smiles in the process! I remember a friend and I made a huge hand-drawn birthday card for Mickey Hatcher's birthday one year when they were still having spring training in Orlando. Was hoping to meet the magic man, but that never happened. I think we ended up giving the card to a clubhouse attendant in the hopes that Hatcher actually got it. What a fun player he was!
  20. If you are suggesting that the Twins trade Slegers and Duffy to make room for Kinley, I don't think that would --- or should --- happen. At this point, with 2 weeks left in ST, Kinley is going to have to flash some real magic to make this club. He doesn't appear to be the second coming of Johan Santana, so I don't think we'll regret losing him.
  21. I sense a big dose of excitement, if not optimism, on the board after the Lynn signing. Very cool! All of us long-suffering Twins fans can be forgiven for feeling excited at the moment.
  22. Yeah, on paper the Twins look like one of the better teams in the division. Cleveland, or course, looks to be THE strongest team in that division, but as mikelink noted, the Chisox could surprise this year, and even KC might have a bit of life left in them. That's the beauty of baseball. who the hell knows what's gonna happen. But I can't wait to find out!
  23. I'm reaching my tolerance limit for all these four-letter words. Lynn ... Cobb ... I just hope some team signs one or both of those players this week, just so I can stop reading about the likelihood of their signing or not.
  24. Looking at the "on the bubble" bench players, which ones are the best bets to go North with the team? Seems like that group would include Granite, Adrianza, Aybar, Vargas (most likely they try and trade him), and Grossman, Any surprise picks to make the team among the non-pitchers?
