Trade Market Calling for the Twins

Today the Pittsburgh Pirates swapped Sterling Marte to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a pair of prospects. In completing that deal, it’s another reminder that the trade market has yet to truly take off, and it makes a good amount of sense that the Minnesota Twins be involved.

We still have yet to see any organizations move a big pitcher. Nolan Arenado looks to be on his way out of Colorado, and Mookie Betts could certainly be headed somewhere else if Boston is ready to deal. Going into the offseason it appeared that the Twins were well positioned to make a move, and nothing has changed to suggest otherwise.

Right now, there’s a decent level of redundancy in Minnesota’s farm system, and there’s a strong mix of impact prospects alongside depth talent. The organization is not only going to have a substantial amount of decisions to make on the 40-man roster prior to 2021, but there’s going to be more than a handful that are extremely difficult.

Expecting the Twins to land either Gerrit Cole or Stephen Strasburg would have always been a pipe dream at best. Zack Wheeler and Hyun-Jin Ryu would have completed Derek Falvey’s quest for an impact arm, but one was an upside play while the other has significant injury concerns. Doling out cash on either could have went up in smoke, and the long-term effects may be more costly.

This is where we should again begin thinking about the trade market. After Josh Donaldson was signed by Minnesota, it appeared to put a bow on their offseason. Realistically though, neither Rich Hill nor Homer Bailey represent the necessary addition to calm concern out of the gate. Bailey is more a Kyle Gibson replacement than anything, and Hill’s impact may not be felt until October. Just recently clearing the previous high in payroll, there should still be room to squeak out a few more dollars.

We haven’t entered a scenario in which it becomes necessary to move either Royce Lewis or Alex Kirilloff but listening on offers and pursuing arms can be done knowing everything else is taken care of. Donaldson is more than an exciting addition on his own, but he wasn’t brought here for four years to sit back and carry the load. Minnesota made an aggressive move like that with the idea that talent can be supplemented as a whole and getting the entire 26-man help is a must.

I have no idea if the Twins are content with the rotation as it stands today. It’s certainly not in shambles, but there’s also clear opportunities for growth. Maybe they’ll play a handful of games before deciding that something else needs to be done. What I do know is that making a trade remains a very sensible action, the assets are there, the timing is right, and the market is beginning to reveal itself.

Totally agree except I don`t have as much faith in Bailey as you do. In the beginning of the season there`s a big gap between Berrios - Odorizzi & the rest of the pack. Berrios - Odorizzi are lined up & motivated to take an extra step forward but others are far behind. Pineda will help in the final push & hopefully Hill will be ready to roll by Sept..  Berrios - Odorizzi could be over worked by the time Oct. comes around. Graterol is in the BP & even if they change their mind he won`t be ready until later in the season. Could Walker be the one? Could we trade for some one else until a better prospect (John Gray) comes along? Could we win the division w/o trading for someone now? Yes I believe so but can we do that w/o over-taxing Berrios - Odorizzi? We need a strong rotation going into the post season & we need to address the 40 man roster problem before the off season

I think that today's Pittsburgh trade is interesting in that they traded Marte for two talented 19 year olds. To me that suggests they are in core rebuild mode not looking for major league ready talent. They may be more interested in a Cavaco, Celestino, Immanuel Rodriguez type in a trade also. I can't imagine they have much interest in Cave unless it would be to save payroll the next couple of years. But I do like the idea of trading with Pittsburgh for pitching. Get them on the phone and see what they are interested in.

I remember the `92 Twins pitching rotation Smiley, Tapani, Erickson & Krueger. I had such high hopes for them. But I felt they got over extended (especially Smiley) &  tanked & never lived up to that expectation.

Last year I had even greater expectations for Berrios, Odorizzi, Gibson, Perez & Pineda & they exceeded my expectations. They were feeding off each other, it was wonderful! W/o this glorious run up to June, we wouldn`t have made it to the post season! The BP faltered & put a lot of pressure on this rotation & they ran out of gas at the end. This especially effected Gibson who had been fighting e coli & was still fighting colitis. Perez is not a strong starting pitcher & should not have been treated as one (he should have been used extensively in tandem if he didn`t want to go to the BP.) Pineda is a strong starting pitcher & him being used in tandem helped him to come on strong at the end.

I`m not excited about this year rotation at all, I`m afraid Berrios, Odorizzi  & the BP will be over extended. Yes, we have a fantastic line up, yes, we have a great BP, yes we have a few promising prospects that are not there yet. Our starting pitching overall is inferior. We need someone (by trade or otherwise) to bridge that gap especially in the beginning of the season.  Again I suggest we need to be creative to keep our pitching staff fresh & hungry; using openers as often as possible, limit pitching count according to each pitchers limits. Rotating pitchers from the minors to the majors, this will give everyone rest they need & more experience & evaluations of up coming pitchers.

With looking at what the Padres are offering Boston for BOTH Price and Betts, I would think that we could package something together that would involve Rosario, a top 5 prospect (Larnach?), and two low level prospects, and eat the majority of the Price contract?  By the Padres offering Myers, they are still getting a bad contract out of the deal, and by dealing Price and Betts (shift Kepler to Left) to us, they get a major league 30+ HR hitter in Rosario, a top prospect, two low level prospects and relieved of the Price contract.  Just imagine if we had Price in our rotation and swapping out Rosario for Betts (even if it is just one year of him, which works out because Kirilloff would be ready by then?

With spring training around the corner there is still plenty of time to make a deal. Archer is going to be costly as he has a big name.. but the production hasn't matched his abilities yet. He also has a favorable salary at  9 mil in 21' and 11 mil in 22. So we would be trading for 2 years for whatever assets we would be giving up...

I do believe there will be other options out there but not likely with the talent of Archer.

Archer has a big name and zero track record at this point. He’s also not incredibly cheap, and Pittsburgh would need to eat some of that salary to recoup better prospects. Musgrove is the much more desirable pitcher there right now.

I still say if you want to deal with Boston substitute Sale for Price, get a better pitcher who is only 30 years old and have him for 5 years of team control.  Sale becomes your #1.  Price would probably be our #3.  And even if it's only one year of Mookie, Kiriloff will be ready in 2021.  We can certainly make a better offer than the Padres.
