Speculating that the Twins were opening a roster spot at Rochester before returning Arraez to the Red Wings. Expect we will eventually learn that they got cash. With the International signing period closing in 12 days, doubt it would be slot money as 2019-2020 International money can't be traded until after July 1st...or is it the 2nd?

I really hate days when the organization goes 0-4. And the DSL Twins don't play on Sunday, so no help there. When searching for something good, saw that Sammons and Sands both had solid starts. Blankenhorn's home run continues his excellent play at AA while Kirilloff continues settling in with a 2-5 day. At Cedar Rapids, any day with Javier in the lineup is a good day. Hopefully, his average will get above .300 soon so he will get a promotion to the Fort by early July. Maybe Lewis' bat heats up so he can move up to open a spot for Javier. Now time to sit back and see who the Twins take with their three picks tonight. Will they be lucky, or good, and have one of the three become the next superstar that everyone else failed to select?

Before everybody goes crazy thinking about the Twins signing Kimbrel, ask yourselves one good question. Is he a good fit for this team? A big part of why this team is winning like they are is because there is unbelievable chemistry amongst guys that seem to both like each other and like playing with each other. Part of that is because many of them came up thru the minors together, winning at a lot of those stops along the way. I know nothing about Kimbrel, but if he isn't a really good fit for this team signing him will be a mistake. And he doesn't have to be a jerk, just not the right personality to blend into what this team currently has.

Well that was fun, then nail biting, then fun again! Guess we needed every one of those runs. 104 games left and 60 wins will get us 100. Don't want to bother with the math, but that is less than .600 winning percentage, or almost a hundred points less than they have been winning the first 2+ months. Can Smeltzer repeat his first start? I really, really, really want to take 2 of 3 from the Tribe.

Good seeing Cave heat up following a slow start after being sent down. Expect Rochester's lineup will get another addition tomorrow when it is likely Arraez will be returned. Looked at Kirilloff's last 10 games, .351 average with a pair of home runs and only 6 strikeouts along with 6 walks. Took a few weeks to shake off the rust, but seems he is back to being the Alex Kirilloff we all expect to see. And what does Duran get for his excellent start, his 5th loss in 5 decisions. Seems to confirm that wins and losses doesn't tell us all that much. Also good seeing Winder continue to dominate the Midwest League. I know TD doesn't include the DSL games in this report, but they began their season yesterday with a 13-4 loss to the Yankees. After battling for the championship last season, this season could be long if wins are what you are looking for. Can't believe how young this team is with 21 of their 34 rostered players having no, none, zero professional experience. Granted, not all the rookies are 17 years old, but this may be the youngest, most inexperienced DSL team I remember. The best news was that Misael Urbina played center field and was in the lead off spot. He was 1 for 4 with his hit being a double.

Last Monday I thought if the Twins split with Milwaukee and Tampa, then took 2 of 3 against Cleveland, it would be a great 9 game stretch. Split with Milwaukee...check; Split with Tampa...check, with a chance of winning the four game series. Then on to Cleveland. This team shows no sign of letting up from playing at the highest level. Key injuries, Sano, Garver and Cruz, haven't caused them to miss a beat. Will they maintain this pace for the rest of the season, not likely. But we also wouldn't have expected them to maintain it for the first two months. So let's stay buckled in for what might be a heck of a ride!

I thought they would have a lot of problems getting everyone protected this year also. Then took a look. Smerltzer is no longer a concern as he is on the roster. I see 8 or 9 players that will likely be added: Blankenhorn, Jax, Hackimer, Diaz, Raley, Alcala, Graterol, Duran and Javier. There are a few others that could play themselves into consideration by fall, but the above group probably need to be added or lost. When I look at the current 40-man, there are lots of players that will either be gone or can be removed so I don't see this being a problem.

I see that the DSL Twins begin their season today. Looked at the roster last night and saw there were a lot of players in their first year of professional ball, more than usual if memory serves.

Thanks Seth for doing these each month, it is appreciated. Seeing that .385 average and 1.025 OPS from Raley, surprised he didn't make the Top 5. Was it because he got injured and only played about half the month? Count me amongst those who had forgotten about Diaz by the end of last year. Considering he was Rule 5 eligible and no one selected him in last December's draft, guess the rest of baseball also forgot about him. Doubt he will be eligible this December, eh Seth? And it is always good seeing first round picks doing well. Twins may have gotten it right last June. Would be great to get a top starter with a mid-round pick.

4-0....Love it! Nice seeing Cave heating up a bit. Expect he will be needed at some time during the long summer. If the Twins can find a way to get Thorpe to keep the ball in the park, he could be very good. Can't wait until Wednesday to see Balazovic back on the mound.

Nice start to his stay at AA for Rortvedt, Seth. When do you see him being ready to join the Twins? I had been thinking September, 2020, could it be sooner? With both he and Jeffers on the horizon, do the Twins go into next year with Garver, Astudillo and some AAAA catcher at Rochester? Or do they try resigning Castro to a short term contract, say a year or two? That trio sure is working good this year. Looks like Diaz has turned the corner and is becoming the hitter many thought he would. Expect he will be added to the 40-man come November. Will be following Balazovic and Thorpe's starts tonight.

Article: Finer Points: Draft Bonus Pools
rdehring replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks, Jeremy. My question was related to the three way trade they made I think shortly before spring training. I may be mistaken, but I recall they got $750,000 of International Pool money from Baltimore for the 2018-2019 signing period. It was mentioned at the time they were down to $80,000 after signing Urbina and this would give them an additional pot of cash to sign someone late in the period.- 19 replies

Article: Finer Points: Draft Bonus Pools
rdehring replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks, Jeremy, draft manuevering is always interesting to follow. What I do recall from last year's draft is that the Twins signed more players than I remember under the previous regime. I see Seth talked about Helman above. Was he the only player signed to more than $125,000 after round 10? Or were there others? Although this is related to the International Pool money, do you know if the Twins ever used the dollars they traded for last winter and must be spent by June 15?- 19 replies

That's a real nice trio hitting 2-3-4 at Fort Myers, Diaz, Larnach, Jeffers, scoring 4 and driving in 6 on 8 hits last night. If Lewis gets hot in the lead off spot, this team will be hitting like the Twins. Good to see clean outings from Romero and Jay. Considering that the second Red Wings game wasn't played, will Thorpe get the start tonight? Rortvedt coming in for Garver caught my eye. Good chance they are the Twins two catchers a couple years from now.

Thanks for the update. I believe that if a team gets 3 players out of each draft who eventually contribute to the major league team, it was a good draft. Especially if one becomes a regular. You never know where these guys are going to end up, however, looks to me there is a good chance at least three will play for the Twins some day and Larnach looks to be a real good player.

Great report SD, thanks. Sounds like Mr. Winder is one sharp young man. That isn't surprising considering he is a VMI grad. Seems those military schools do a good job of developing mature grads. Had noticed that the Kernels had evened their record. Don't know if there is enough time to sneak into a first half playoff slot, but should set them up well for the second half. Am anxious to see Javier get more playing time. My hope is that he does so well you don't have him for the rest of the season. Have noticed that Schulfer has been doing very well of late. As I am always interested in players with ties to Wisconsin, would like to know more about him from a future report. Thanks again.

It is great getting this type of information from someone with your creds. Thanks for sharing. With your tie to Dr. Andrews, have you heard of a Dr. Clancy? -

Great report. Was curious if you are in the medical field or have a medical background? As for Graterol, let's hope for the best as the Twins need him beginning sometime next year. -
I don't see Sale, who throws much harder and if memory serves is much taller. What I am hopeful, is that we have a modern day Glaven.

Loved the headline, Cody. Kirilloff is hitting .325 average in his last ten games with two hits in five of them. After shaking off the rust from missing the first month plus of the season, he is beginning to play like the player we know. My question, is he the top prospect in the organization? Also great seeing Larnach and Jeffers both playing very well in Fort Myers. Looking forward to seeing how Thorpe pitches tonight for Rochester.

What a wonderful first start for Smeltzer. Need to see more, but he just might be part of the answer for 2020 and beyond. Looking at that bullpen usage chart, it sure appears there is no reason for this team to not cut back to 12 pitchers when Cruz/Garver come off the IL.

Isn't it great that you are all having this hot debate over whom the Twins should send down when A, B and C come off the IL. In recent years, there was an abundance of players worthy of demotion. What a great step forward for this team. As for my two cents, I think it is more important for Arraez to be playing every day than Astudillo. So when everyone is healthy, he seems to be the logical first choice. Don't have a clue what to do after that because that comes down to: 1) cutting back to 12 pitchers; 2) Adrianza, or 3) Astudillo.

Well that's sure a surprise. Could Perez be battling the same illness that Kepler and others had over the weekend? I guess we will see what Smeltzer can do on the big stage.
