Article: Projecting The 2020 Twins Line-Up
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Are Robbie Grossman and Kurt Suzuki? You're going to have to play who you have available to you. Seeing this spelled out, I'm thinking everyone's pitcher heavy Dozier trade proposals perhaps should shift to include at least one bat who may contribute here. I thought I would be more excited to see this projection, gosh almighty this team needs to restock.- 40 replies

Article: All About Jose De Leon
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess I don't understand how getting other prospects would be under-selling Dozier. The ceiling of a second "MLB-ready" pitcher is going to be much lower than a guy who still needs a year or two. I mean Pat Dean is MLB ready. -
It is not like that, these guys weren't declared innocent in a court of law. The court of law didn't weigh in on the situation because the accuser didn't press charges. What it IS like is a school going through a thorough review process and deciding that these guys should not be allowed to go to school there, which is a denial of service of the same magnitude as when they deny admission to folks who carry the far lesser offense of having bad grades in high school.
-
They aren't enforcing criminal law, and if that's what you're going with you haven't followed any of these proceedings. You know they aren't and you're only trying to twist a point. I'm also not saying the criminal justice system is broken in this situation, that's your claim. If a victim of sexual assault doesn't want to press charges or comes to an arrangement with the accused the law can't and won't do anything. But you're here trying to claim that simply because no charges are pressed, the school should let suspected rapists wander around their campus full of young adults who could be victims. Universities have issues, but kicking people out for suspected sexual assault is not one of them.
-
Not good enough? How because we still have sexual assaults? Now you're just being stubborn if you're trying to imply that there is actually some solution that would forever eradicate them. What exactly are you wanting the U to do? They are compelled by Title IX and the VAWA to investigate the situation, they are further compelled by FERPA to protect the identities of the accused. I don't even know what you are taking issue with anymore, because again if it's the rights of the accused, your beef is with the Star Tribune for illegally publishing information that was supposed to be protected by FERPA, not the U. Even the players dropped their protest once they saw the report and understood the school followed protocol.
-
They did address this problem, it's called Title IX and the added way, way too late VAWA or Violence Against Women Act. They also addressed the issue of how to protect the accused with FERPA or Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

If your workplace has a history of murder problems that is difficult for authorities to enforce but is causing your work environment to become unsafe. Then yes, yes they should.
-
I really can't believe that is a position anybody would logically take. Schools can make rules about alcohol but not sexual assault, frankly I'm pretty disturbed that this is a position anyone would get behind.
-
Most colleges do ban booze even while the legal system may have no power to back them which means the school is solely responsible for enforcement. So colleges making their own rules and enforcing their own infractions regarding booze is OK but making their own rules and enforcing their own infractions over sexual misbehavior is not? That's completely contradictory.

I'm not looking for justice, I'm looking for my children's safety, both of them. Considering we never hear parents of victims sexual assault rally for justice for the accused, I'm guessing the idea of justice coming before safety is more of an idyllic thought until it actually affects one's family. But again, I'm all for safeguarding the rights of the accused, if there isn't legal backing in the form of criminal charges, names shouldn't be released. I'm more than accepting of accusations without proof not stigmatizing these guys for life. That's on the media though. Unless the school released these names that's not on them. If they did and I'm just not aware, then yes, I'd find the school culpable in that regard.

I'm not sure where you found the definition of an ace being 3 seasons of 3.5 WAR. Either way, most of those teams are willing to buy an ace so it's not as pressing for them to develop one, AZ, Atlanta, NY, KC and Toronto all have or are able to buy one, heck even Milwaukee has made the attempt. I'd also be satisfied enough with Johnny Cueto to remove Cincinnati from that list. Either way, it's not like we as fans should be satisfied simply because other teams have failed in this area as well. Being one of the bottom 1/3rd doesn't work for me.

No one here has argued against justice for the accused, no one. Schools getting rid of students they fear may cause or have caused safety issues is the price of doing business. If the student who was accused takes action against the school, that's also the price of doing business. The government doesn't have ulterior motives when they tell schools to crack down on this non-sense, they know from decades of experiences that schools tend to cover this stuff up as a way of self preservation. The schools needed to be motivated to act against their instincts to sweep this stuff under the rug, it's not some grand government conspiracy. I agree that many of these crimes are likely born of ignorance, no better way to fight ignorance than a case as in-your-face as this. I agree, the punishments likely won't prevent this kind of action, hearing everyone in near agreement talking about how wrong it is will, and that's what's happening. Your arguments for role-modeling and talking about the issues are taking place due to direct causation of cases like this.
-
But we're just back to the differences between legal punishment and punishment by the school. These guys are getting the benefit of the doubt by the legal system. I would agree that names shouldn't be named publically if the school is going to act without the backing of a legal ruling, but as far as I can tell the school didn't disclose the identities of anyone, that would be on the Star Tribune. If these were band members no one would know these names, but they're football players which makes them local celebrities and the public has ALWAYS known the suspected misbehavior of celebrities even while not knowing what their own neighbor is up to. That's not on the school. As for the school punishments, I'm just fine if the school gets rid of students they feel are a threat to the safety of the other students. Just like in the criminal justice system, wrong verdicts will be made from time to time, just like at times employees get fired unjustly and parents punish their children unjustly that's unfortunate but it's never going to be entirely preventable.
-
I agree it will be disappointing if the eventual outcomes are still the same, but if Liriano had stayed healthy and Garza had just stayed, those two and Baker would have been a pretty decent 1-3. This team desperately needs to find a true ace though. It sure doesn't feel like other franchises routinely go decades at a time without finding one. This sure seems like a Twins problem, not a small market problem.

Speaking as a father of both a boy and a girl, both of whom I would like to go to college, doing "something" and doing it "now" is something I am 100% absolutely in support of. Why should something like preventing sexual assault take a long time to implement? As a society we were at fault for not doing more earlier, we could even say that we didn't know any better as deluded as that sounds. We do know better now and people are acting. And that's great. I don't know why you don't think what is happening now isn't working. With cases like this making the news we are miles ahead of where we were even ten years ago when it comes to recognizing sexual assault. Even last decade, much of this stuff would have been shrugged off and dismissed. It is working and it needs to continue.

I'm on the Thorpe-wagon also. Prior to the TJ surgery he was the fastest rising prospect this team had, threatening to join the Berrios/Buxton/Sano group. The surgery is a concern obviously, but he lost his steam last year due to missing the season with mono. And I'm not going to hold mono over a guy, that only seems like it would be career threatening if he was a professional gigolo.

It doesn't have to be a "tough on crime" push, too many men of all ages don't realize that this garbage is illegal/immoral. I loved the movie Animal House and most of the other teen sexual romp comedies back in the day. Many are still held up as classics despite the fact that nearly every one of them portrays sexual assault as a hilarious game. Suspensions don't have to be a tough on crime situation, they need to be an eye-opening situation. I'd wager there have been more than one young men who have read the report and thought to themselves, "that could have been me" who now would have second thoughts seeing this situation from the victim's perspective.

The bad news is that I still haven't figured out how to turn off the speakers on my new computer at work. The good new is that everyone else is out for lunch. -
And in this case, the video may as well not even exist if it's only 90 seconds long since affirmative consent is an ongoing process and the process surely didn't take 90 seconds. If the video doesn't show the whole act, it's pretty much useless. Except to ID some of the parties involved.

Because I like to keep trophies from my victims, duh. And it's waaaaaaaay more than twelve. -
Just because the police didn't charge anyone doesn't mean no crime was committed. I'm not the one making assumptions, we don't know what happened, nor likely do the police, which means they CAN'T act. The university and the police don't have to have the same burden of proof standards nor should they. The school doesn't have to have proof beyond a reasonable doubt to flunk a kid for cheating on a test or to ban a guy from the women's dorms if he's suspected of stalking. I'm not assuming anything happened and legally the police cannot either but the University can. Going to school there and partaking in their activities isn't a constitutional right, it's a privilege that can be revoked upon their discretion. If they think there is reasonable enough suspicion of improper conduct they have a right to act in the best interest of the community, the other students and their brand. The university has bungled this and just about everything else, but they do not have to act with the same standards as law enforcement.
