Thus far in the majors Slegers has thrown more sliders than changeups, both of which have been effective. Both his two-seamer and four-seamer have gotten crushed though.

Wells has gotten good-not-great strikeout numbers in Ft. Myers. Anyone know his velocity? So many of these taller pitchers don't throw too hard and are more of control pitchers. I've got my fingers crossed with Wells but it would be nice if someone could confirm he doesn't really fit the Chris Young, Jon Rauch, Aaron Slegers pitching profile. Does Wells throw hard and/or does his breaking stuff have good movement?

Well that's not for a lack of effort on the part of his dad. Breekie18 is killing it in the Adopt-A-Prospect forum. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/28928-donny-breek-2018/

You were concerned that $17M was too much of a risk, not resigning the players. Payroll isn't going to be an issue, they could overpay Dozier or Escobar for one year or sign Eduardo Nunez for $4M or give Neil Walker a minor league deal and they'll be in the exact same situation, that being a veteran on a one year deal. They should be choosing who'd they like best and get that person, salary be damned as it's not going to be a factor in 2019. There are no such thing as tight purse strings with a $45M payroll.

This is the second mention of Corey Ray being a trade target I've found on our site today. Is this flowing from some national report or is it just a TD theme because Milwaukee has pretty good OF depth? He seems like an awfully good prospect for most of what the Twins have to offer.

Had Kirilloff stayed healthy, Kepler might be nervously looking over his shoulder right about now!

Gonsalves was always said to have decent control, still, at all levels he threw too many pitches. I'm putting my money (once again) on the belief that he's a nibbler and has always gotten the lower level guys to chase out of the zone which is how he racked up the strikeouts despite not having top end stuff. The AAA guys probably aren't chasing.

Article: Dozier’s Days Numbered, Then What?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know why we'd expect a guy who can't stay healthy to suddenly get healthy at 36. Joe might go about his business in a professional manner and not get into trouble, but if he was actually a clubhouse leader who helped make an impact on the young guys, I doubt every free agent rumor we'd hear each off season would be about a corner/DH type who the team desperately wants for his leadership qualities. -
Fox Sports North Falsehoods of 2018's First Half
nicksaviking commented on Miles Death's blog entry in Thome the Moneyball
Yeah, with Latroy, Justin and Torii he seems to both lob some easy opportunities for the recently former players to provide anecdotes and connect with the younger men. With Jack and Bert he alternates between catering to and needling the curmudgeons. It's gotten a bit stale. -
If that's the plan they better get him up to pitch on Friday against a terrible KC team, let him go against Toronto on Wednesday the 25th then thank our lucky stars that he misses the four game Boston series. But with his contract and his recent injury he's probably more likely a post August 1st waiver trade candidate.

Article: Miguel Sano's Struggles
nicksaviking replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How much are the Red Sox paying Fernando Tatis to manage their DR team? If he has truly been a good influence on Sano and is a good mentor the Twins should offer him double and find a spot for him in Ft. Myers. I can't imagine DR managers make all that much. -
Article: Potential Suitors for Brian Dozier
nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gray is a bad fit because four-seamers aren't naturally supposed to create groundballs but he is or the team is making him throw them almost exclusively low in the zone surely in an attempt to limit HR. They've been getting crushed with an ISO on his four-seamer of .234 this year, likely because the pitch location is so predictable. He's pitching like a sinkerballer without a sinkerball. -

I don't know how Gibson wouldn't be considered a clear upgrade. If the Twins were in a pennant race no one here would swap out Gibson for Gray. If the Twins decided today to dump Kohl Stewart or if the team had decided to not pick up Gibson's 2017 option it would/would have been met by Twins fans with a collective yawn, meanwhile fans of the other 29 teams would all be begging for their team to pick up the former prospect sure that their team could fix him. As for the organization's point of view, it has to be as clear to them as it does everyone else that Jon Gray's repertoire is just an awful fit for Colorado. His stuff isn't made to induce groundballs but that's what they've been trying to do, mostly in vain. -

nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It could be, but like a lot of former top prospects he kind of looks like a guy where the home team is starting to view greener pastures. His career trajectory now in his fourth season actually looks a lot like Kyle Gibson at the same point: 1st year - Struggle 2nd year - Struggle 3rd year - Yay he turned the corner! 4th year - Nope I guess not ________________________ 5th year - Let's trade him for a washed up Troy Tulowitzki Fans from outside of the organization probably still place more value on his former prospect status and draft position while those who watch the Rockies are likely more frustrated by the inconsistency. And it's not like he ever dominated the minors either. -

He's not actually throwing less sinkers, he's just throwing them less with 2 strikes and less often to left-handed batters. -

Well he approved a record payroll this year and then they saved 8M by dumping Hughes for a draft pick. That move would look a heck of a lot better if it was cancelled out by doing something similar. -

I don't know about the Rockies trading for MI, but Gray looks like a guy who needs to get out of Colorado. He doesn't throw a sinker which is basically required at Coors Field but now days is frowned upon everywhere else. It looks like he peppers the lower part of the zone with his four-seamer regularly. With his big fastball he looks like a guy who could probably get a lot done pitching up in the zone more often; which is pretty much a cardinal sin in Colorado. His splits away from Coors aren't great but I'd be willing to take a chance that it is due to him using the same pitch strategies both home and away. Speaking of former prospects, though I wouldn't target him specifically, I'd also be curious to see if Jeff Hoffman could be fixed. It looks like he may now be starting the transition to a relief pitcher. I like those starters-turned-relievers a full year after they start the transition, that's when you seem to find the studs who resurrect their careers in a new role. -
I don't have a personal ranking, but if I were to list the prospects that make me hopeful for the future, Thorpe would be in my top 5.

Most said it was a reach and maybe he was picked to help sign the HS'ers picked later in the top 10. But there might be something to this. Bat first catchers with sketchy defensive skills might be one of the more under appreciated players in the draft. Catchers who appear that they will later have to move positions seem to get more demerits than a shortstop who'll have to move over to 3B or a CF who has to get kicked to LF one day. Mike Napoli, Joey Votto, Neil Walker, Yonder Alozno, Josh Donaldson, Wil Myers, Matt Adams, Kyle Schwarber and Paul Dejong were all drafted as catchers. Based on the team's other picks, it looks to me that they were picking the best bats, not the best bats for a particular position; catcher probably wasn't an exception. The team's strategy might be to just find the best hitters and if things don't fit defensively they'll take care of that with trades or free agents, which is basically what happens anyway since pegging a player's defensive capabilities pre-draft doesn't tend to be all that accurate anyway.

I don't put a ton of stock into pre-draft defensive evaluations. You'd think the players' defensive skills would be fairly easy to peg, but for some reason they're often off by a wide margin. I'm reserving judgment on Jeffers defensive capabilities until after a full season in Cedar Rapids.
