Even if Austin does go unclaimed, doesn't he have the ability to refuse an assignment since he's already been outrighted? If I were the Twins and I was going to remove Austin from the 25 man, I think I'd be more inclined to do so when it is MORE likely that he'll get claimed, I'd assume then there would at least be a market for him and they could get something in return. If he makes it through waivers, does he really want to stay here when he's still staring at Cron, Cruz, Sano, Gonzalez, Garver, Austudillo, Cave, Rooker, Wade and Weil all dreaming to take his at bats this year?

This roster looks destined to see lots and lots of transactions. Sounds like a fun summer as long as I can separate myself from getting overly attached to anyone. Barring injury, the full list of players I am relatively confident will be on the 25-man come August 1st: Max Kepler Jorge Polanco Jose Berrios

Yeah, I could almost understand standing pat with the rotation as I didn’t like the free agent starters at all. However, the bullpen could have easily supported three legit additions, and there were plenty of good relievers available for very cheap. Even plenty good ones who had to settle for minor league deals. I’d like to hear the reasoning for not trying for even the Tyler Clippard/Bud Norris/Adam Warren types.

I'm not sure what if any impact Baldelli had on TB's lineup construction last year, but TB had six guys bat leadoff in at least 15 games. Most of the other spots in the lineup were very fluid as well. Old School me likes to go back and think about the standard batting order of the teams from say 1987 or 2002, but lineup flexibility has tons of benefits to it. I mean, was it ever really wise to bat Jacque Jones leadoff against lefties?

I'll ride with Kepler at the front of the ship for now, but it would be really nice if Buxton finally becomes what people have been hoping for or it would be great if Wade or somebody else breaks out. If Kepler was hitting like he did last year I don't think he's productive or consistent enough to leadoff and if he finally realizes his potential, he'd probably be better served in the middle of the lineup.

The Twins can afford what the Yankees paid Severino and the Phillies paid Nola. If those are the types of deals Berrios is looking for, it only makes sense that he wouldn't do an extension now as he's a year behind those two in service time. Next year was always more likely unless Berrios was willing to take a lesser deal or the Twins were really willing to overpay. I'd be curious to hear if Rosario also said no or if for some reason he wasn't considered for an extension.

I'm OK seeing how the new trade deadline plays out, I wouldn't have been opposed to seeing what happened by pushing the traditional deadline to August 31st though either. Teams need to be encouraged to make moves earlier in the year though. Maybe make the stakes of late season trades financially significant? Teams making trades after July 31st have to pay in what equals 50% of their acquired players' reaming season salary into the revenue sharing pool? Trades between June 1 and July 31st have to pay in 15% and trades made prior to June pay nothing?
-
A replacement for a star player isn't usually available anyway, there's usually a good reason why a player makes it through waivers and is available in August. Also, every other professional sport has a firm trade deadline and they seem to manage. I'd think the 3 batter rule would increase strategy, it just wouldn't be the current strategy. A manager is going to have to gameplan more than one at bat in advance with this rule. I also rarely see a guy who "doesn't have it" get yanked after one batter anyway. It's usually not clear that he doesn't have it until he's faced three batters.
-
I like the rule changes, but even more than that, I like the collaboration between the owners and the players. This seems like a huge step in avoiding a strike, I would have thought both sides would have been waiving these changes around like weapons in an attempt to score a better deal in the upcoming CBA. It almost makes me think the owners have already let it be known to the MLBPA that they're aware the current economic situation is crap and the players will get a bigger piece of the pie in the next CBA.

Did Phil Hughes take his excised rib with him or did he leave it here? Maybe we can pull a fast one on them.

I like Sano's chances of rebounding this year, but I did not like the narrative that this team was hoping that Buxton and Sano would finally emerge and carry this team to glory. They can find other ways to win than through Buxton and Sano. I hate to see anyone injured, but this is OK, I really want the team forced to build an entire team, not just a group of guys on top of two pillars which we have to cross our fingers that they can hold the weight. Then when Sano comes back and starts crushing the leftfield seats, that's just bonus.

Please, Cat Stevens wrote the song, it's got to be his version. But kudos to everyone for not suggesting Rod Stewart.- 112 replies

It seems to me you're implying that the guys working at fangraphs don't know what they're doing by arguing that you don't like the output of fangraphs. I'm arguing that once these guys are hired away, they're likely not using the output of fangraphs, they are talented enough individuals to create new things specific for their new clubs.
-
I doubt the guys teams are hiring away are using algorithms on fangraphs, otherwise why wouldn't these teams just bookmark fangraphs and instead pay an intern to read it to them? The guys who are getting hired away, and there are a lot of them, are almost certainly good at parsing the information, and also likely able to create new, team specified algorithms, tests, statistics and evaluations.

Yeah Boswell is a forgotten guy sometimes. 64 wins by the age of 24 and 37 complete games! He was on his way to a great career. Maybe not with the Twins though, they were approaching their "trade everyone" era and while no one liked Billy Martin so getting knocked out by him might not be a great determination of character, just previous to his KO, he himself knocked out Bobby Allison, so, he may not have been a beloved teammate.

Does he know that opening day is in Minnesota?!? In March?!?! I thought all the pitchers would have been fighting for the 4th spot in the rotation!

I agree, Marwin doesn't raise the ceiling much, but he raises the floor tremendously. This signing is taking away at bats from Adrianza, Field, Grossman, Petit and Motter. I'd think it would go without saying that this team is going to have guys hurt/terrible/suspended again in 2019. Who those players are is unpredictable, but now there's a league average hitter on the roster who can cover near any spot saving us from watching a 29-year-old batless journeyman who's been DFA'd three times in the last two months and has spent most of his last five season in AAA. This isn't a blockbuster deal, it's not putting anyone over the top, but everyone and their mother complained about the Twins lack of offensive depth last year, and justifiably so. This should shine as evidence that this team finally cares about establishing a MLB quality bench. It cost them 10M per this year and next? So what, good for them.
