Twins Still Looking For Next Radke
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Whoops – forgot Tyler Jay. He'll be there too. I'm just a bit higher on Romero and Gonsalves. Maybe it'll be Romero, Gonsalves, Jay, Berrios and Stewart, with Gibson in the bullpen. We'll see in a few years. -
Twins Still Looking For Next Radke

I know, I know, I'm an eternal optimist.. I'm looking at Romero, Golsalves, Berrios, Stewart and Gibson as the rotation of the future, maybe 2019 – and I believe all can contribute. Just an optimist talking. -

Article: Falvey's First Stand
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I respectfully disagree. I think Dozier is worth more to the Twins than a POTENTIAL #2 or #3 starter. We might not know for 3 or 4 years if this was the right move. The way De Leon pitched in the majors last year, I question whether he'll get to a #2 status anytime soon. He might be a #5 in 2017, a #4 in 2018, and not get to a #2 until 2020. You don't know. The Twins needed more than just one decent prospect for Dozier – even if the market is soft. -
Put this idea in the CRAZY file... Between Dozier and Polanco – which is the better fielder – who has the better range, footwork, instincts, arm? I'd like to see Dozier play SS a few times in ST, and Polanco play both SS and 2B. Dozier played 83 games at SS early in his career, and I bet he's grown some since then. I'd like to see him try SS, with Polanco at 2B, just to see if it would work. I think Dozier is a better fielder than Polanco. Here's another idea – flip the entire infield. Mauer's getting to be a better 1B, and clearly has the arm. Put Mauer at 3B, Dozier at SS, Polanco at 2B and Sano – the weakest fielder – at 1B. Otherwise, if neither Polanco or Dozier cannot cut it at SS, I'd try Vielma until Gordon is ready. Escobar is OK, but not full-time. He's better in the super-utility role. I'm hesitant about putting Polanco at 3B – i'd be concerned about his arm. Better to put Sano – or Dozier – there, if you want better fielding. Here are some combos: 1B 2B SS 3B Mauer Dozier Polanco Sano Sano Polanco Vielma Dozier Mauer Polanco Dozier Sano Sano Polanco Dozier Mauer I know. Crazy is as crazy does.

Regarding the SS platoon void: Engelb Vielma (on the 40-man) also is a switch-hitter on the 40-man roster, who also hits better vs. lefties. But help may be on the way. Nick Gordon, who was in A-ball, expected to be at AA this season, hit .315/.356/.431/.787 vs. right-handers as a lefty batter in 2016. Danny Santana hit .265/.301/.357/.658 as a left-handed hitter vs. right-handed pitchers in 2016. IF he was a defensive specialist that might be tolerable, but he's not. I don't see him making the team heading north. Benji Gonzales, whom the Twins signed as a minor league free agent (SS) and who is invited to spring training, was in AA ball last year, and hit .289/.348/.446/.795 as a left-handed hitter vs. righties. Hitting the other way, he did not quite as well: .265/.340/.367/.708. He just celebrated his 26th birthday (Jan. 15). Happy Birthday! The only other SS on the Twins' non-roster list for spring training is Leonardo Reginatto, who bats right-handed, and did worse against righties. (All these stats are from Baseball-Reference.com) It'll take spring training to determine if a left-handed hitting SS is worthy of making the team in a possible platoon situation (Gonzalez or Gordon, or someone else). But the Twins might also look for a short-term solution until Gordon or Gonzalez is ready.

Twins To Get More From Two Pitching Unknowns

I'd hardly call Tyler Duffey an 'unknown'. But i like the rest of your piece – and I was hoping the Twins would get Haley in the draft. -
The 25 Headed To Target Field
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I think you're pretty much right on – except for two things. I think Vielma will edge Granite for the fourth bench spot; I think they will need a better backup infielder, rather than a fifth outfielder. And I would not be surprised to see May in the bullpen, and Haley as the starter. To me this is almost a coin-toss, but May has struggled as a starter in the past. While his back issues may be linked to being a relief pitcher, I really don't see that as an issue. It'll depend a lot on how the two do in spring training... -
So they DID reach an agreement after all. That's actually pretty low for what I expected. He's been a pretty good relief pitcher.

Wow, you were pretty close, really. Right on with Santiago, $8 million; a little low on Gibson and Kintzler. Kintzler's was actually close to what you said his asking price would be. Obviously Falvey and Levine value him higher than TD or MLBTR. Ryan's will come in today too... Just my thought.

The twins won't go to an arbitration hearing on any of them. When was the last time the Twins went to an arb hearing? Of course, now the Twins are under new management... but still, they'll reach agreements. Seth, I think your numbers are pretty accurate. I find the differences between MLB Trade Rumors and the Twin Daily projections interesting. I tend to think the Twins Daily numbers are closer to the mark in each case.

What Are The Twins Waiting For On Santana?
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I don't believe the Twins will trade Ervin Santana. They need him to pitch every fifth game to at least give them a chance to win fairly consistently. Even if Dozier is kept, the Twins will be better in 2017. Our youngsters (Buxton, Sano, Kepler, Polanco and others) will be better. I believe the management is addressing the pitching problem, but they have to wait until the know whether the Dodgers will offer the pieces they want. Sure the Twins would like to trade Dozier for MLB-ready pitching, and it would make the team better, but they should never undersell him. If the Dodgers are only offering De Leon, then the Twins should walk away. They need two MLB-ready (or near-ready) pitchers plus one or two prospects for Dozier. That's what he's worth. De Leon, Stewart, Alvarez and one other would be my price. But I'm not the Twins' brass. -
Article: 2016 Report Cards: Infield
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Murphy's 'F' grade should be an incomplete. He only had 82 PA. Yes, he hit poorly, and then was sent down. The only other one I'd question is Kennys Vargas' 'B' grade. I'd probably give him a B- or C+. He also didn't have a lot of PA. I'm amazed at his stats – .230 BA, .333 on base and .500 slugging, for an .833 OPS. You wouldn't think that of a .230 hitter. Maybe he is worth a 'B' after all...- 45 replies

Quite possible. Too bad. To those who are just looking for "prospects" not MLB-ready or near MLB-ready starting pitchers, here's my take; Yes, it's possible the Twins don't make the playoffs next year. But anything CAN happen. Our youngsters start to play better. Our pitching improves with better catching and leadership. Our veterans can rebound. I believe we can win the division in 2017; Chicago and Detroit appear to be rebuilding; the Royals struggled somewhat – not as much as the Twins – in 2016. Really the best team is the Indians – and they will likely be very good again. But their pitching and/or hitting could falter. They could be plagued by injuries. You never know. All I'm saying is, don't write-off 2017 just because of a bad year. If the Twins had done that in 1991, after looking bad in 1990, they would not have won their second World Series title. If we're going to trade Dozier - and I'm not against it - we have to get real good value back. He is a valuable player. That's why we need two MLB-ready, or near-ready starting pitchers, plus one or two lower prospects, to play in 2017 for Dozier. And I'm perfectly OK with keeping him IF WE DON'T GET A DECENT OFFER. You've got to have some faith that this team can rebound. We have got some really good players. Give them a chance in 2017. Don't write the season off.

Article: The Waiting Is The Hardest Part
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
St. Louis' top two prospects, Alex Reyes and Luke Weaver are both starting pitchers who reached the major leagues in 2016. Could they and a couple other prospects be traded for Dozier? It's just conjecture at this point.- 40 replies

Darren Wolfson just tweeted this: @DWolfsonKSTP Dozier update: told LAD still very much in it. Here's the new wrinkle: STL very much in it, + Nats & Giants remain in dialogue. #MNTwins That's a new wrinkle indeed! If STL is putting up a similar package to LAD, it could be very interesting...- 40 replies

Article: The Waiting Is The Hardest Part
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I couldn't disagree more. Dozier is not "B" level talent. He is a top-20 hitter with power, and a capable defender. That's not B-level, considering how many hitters there are in the major leagues. He's worth a lot more than just De Leon. De Leon is still a prospect. The Twins should get at least one more MLB-ready starting pitcher and one or two more prospects for Dozier. If not, just keep him.- 40 replies

Article: State Of The Central
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with the assessment about Dozier. I would add that if the Twins do not get a really good package for the 2b, they should not trade him. It feels a tiny bit like December 1986, with the Twins having a very losing record, but with good young players developing. The Twins won it all in 1987, with two top starting pitchers (Blyleven and Viola) and a closer in Reardon. We'll see what happens 30 years after 1987.- 17 replies

A fun exercise, but Blankenhorn won't be at 2B in 2020. If Dozier is traded, he'll be back signed as a free agent, hitting another 42 homers. Hey, it's fun to dream, isn't it? Merry Christmas everyone.- 40 replies

Article: All About Jose De Leon
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As I've said in other posts, the Twins need to get two MLB-ready pitchers for Dozier. Dozier is a known commodity. Trading him for only one MLB-ready pitcher is underselling. -
What about Hughes? Does he go to the BP? Or will he be injured? I'm not sure May is ready to be the No. 2 starter in this lineup. Santiago, or even Gibson. May needs more seasoning. Make him the no. 4. But if Santiago, May and/or Gibson falter after about five starts each, I'd consider a change. Let them all know this is a competition. I like Justin Haley, the player the Twins ultimately acquired in the Rule 5 draft. With a good spring, he could also be in the mix for the starting rotation. But the future is looking brighter. As for the Dozier deal, and getting De Leon and others, I'm thinking the Twins and Dodgers are still not as close as many believe. I'd give it about a 50-50 chance. Don't count your De Leon(s) until they're, well, hatched.

For the record, I hope Dozier is not traded, but if he is, the Twins need to get great value for him. I think, though, the front office is perfectly fine with going into the regular season with BD on the roster.

I would put the chance of a Dozier trade closer to 50 percent, not 90 percent. If the Dodgers truly offer both De Leon and Stewart (and a couple throw-ins) for Dozier, the Twins would probably make that deal. I just don't see the Dodgers doing that. They will offer one or the other (De Leon or Stewart) but not both. I believe the Twins want two MLB-close starting pitchers for Dozier. I'm just not convinced the Dodgers (or any other teams) will offer two MLB-ready starters for Dozier. As a result, Seth, your interim analysis is valuable. It's a good exercise, because if the Twins do not trade Dozier, that's what we're left with, unless someone else is traded or signed. And you said at the start this is not expected to be the Twins' April 25-man roster.

I think Grossman and Danny Santana are gone by spring, either traded or let loose. To me, neither of them reflect what the new front office will want in players who can both hit, at least a little, and catch the ball.
