  1. Correct, my timeline was off. Thanks for the correction. I've amended my original post. The opening of the new ballpark is a worse time than securing funding. It doesn't really change my statement though. The team still would have been crucified if he were to walk. I do agree that a more aggressive approach by TR to extend him would have been a better approach. It never should have gotten to ST of his walk year. That gave Mauer more leverage even without the MVP season.
  2. Let's not also forget that Mauer's new deal was negotiated around the time that the team was having a funding bill being signed for a shiny new ballpark. This team would have been crucified if they let the hometown boy walk when they were using the "we need the ballpark to keep players like Joe" excuse and he was coming off of an MVP season. Edit: my timeline is off...The deal was negotiated as Target Field was set to open, which would make him walking look even worse in my view.
  3. Were you calling for a pay increase when he was putting up MVP numbers making $10.5M a year? This notion is laughable. Salary means nothing on the field.
  4. During the Morneau years, I had no problem with him in the 3 hole. There's a reason Morneau put up monster RBI tallies in those years - the guy hitting in front of him was on base 40%-45% of the time. How the rest of the roster is constructed is out of his control and certainly not his issue. With no true #2, #3, or #4 hitting in the lineup for the last handful of years, there's only so much that could be done. That lies on the FO and to perhaps a far lesser degree on the manager. Even today, I realize that he isn't a 3 hitter but I don't know where to put him and I certainly don't know who to put in the 3 hole in his stead. Again, that's not on Joe. I've always enjoyed watching him hit. I don't stop whatever I'm doing during his plate appearances like I used to, but I still enjoy watching the swing. I think he's a borderline HOF player who will be on the ballot all 10 years.
  5. Probably drive across the lake on a layer of mosquitos in July.
  6. I'm jealous. Been a while since I've been to Ely. We usually head up the north shore and tool around there. My wife won't camp, so that's as close as I get much of the time. It's always hard to come home from up there.
  7. 12 of 21 steals with his speed is criminally putrid. Watch some tape boy! And he gets thrown out...right on cue.
  8. Needs to change his pregame meal to square pizza or turkey gravy.
  9. That was an ok toss, if you like that sort of thing. Which I do.
  10. To keep you on the dance floor for laughs or to get you off of it to save an ounce of what was left of your dignity?
  11. It's been raining in Apple Valley since about 7 and it doesn't look like it's rained a bit downtown.
  12. I'm on mobile... It also appears that I was the only one paying attention or understood, so I should get some credit!
  13. You were studying the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, weren't you?
