  1. Do the Twins have a track record of promoting bullpen arms from AA to the MLB? Or are we hoping for a fast track of those guys getting hot for 5-6 weeks, promote to AAA, get hot for another 5-6 weeks, and be on the MLB club by June/July?
  2. I agree and I'd think Claeys would agree. He only has 3 years, and I'd say even less, to prove that he can be a Big 10 head coach. If I were him, I wouldn't waste precious time on a QB who's proven time and time again that he's not the answer.
  3. Good news for the Gophers this weekend when QB Seth Green committed to the team. Finally, we may have someone who can usurp Leidner of his starting spot. I don't read into how many stars a particular recruit has (he's 4 stars), but any time we can win a recruiting war over schools like Oregon, that's a big win for the program.
  4. I think the Twins have made some strides in regards to C. People may not be happy with giving up Hicks for Murphy, but he certainly has a higher floor than what Herrmann or Fryer could provide. In regards to that potential outfield, I will quote from the movie Home Alone. "Buzz, your girlfriend. WOOF."
  5. Touche, Seth. I guess my perception the last few off-season is different than the reality.
  6. I'm just tired of the same song and dance every off-season whether the Twins are coming off a 60 win season or 90 win season. TR waits until the market settles, and makes middling, underwhelming moves once the dust settles (with the exception of the SP signings) It would be a welcomed breath of fresh air if TR was aggressive in targeting a player he wants, and get him signed, instead of waiting to see who's left.
  7. That very well could be the case. Depends on what your expectation is for a return. My expectation is to acquire a quality bullpen arm for Plouffe. If that happens, I will be happy.
  8. I don't know how much we should be reading into the return that Lawrie got compared to what the Twins could get with Plouffe. Sure Lawrie's potential is higher than Plouffe, but he's not come close to reaching that potential in 5 MLB seasons. There's been rumblings in the last 2 organizations he's been with that Lawrie shows immature, me-first tendencies in the club house. The move looks more like desperation, let's get this guy out of here ASAP. Plouffe's been portrayed as a "good guy" in the club house, and puts up similar stats. I would imagine the return for Plouffe is greater than 2 top 20-ish organization prospects.
  9. Very good point Ash. That's the risk this kind of deal would create. If Shields struggles next season, we're on the hook for the additional 2 years with a declining asset. If Shields returns to form, then he's most likely opting out and we're stuck with 1 good year of him and a comp 1st round pick. If the trade was Nolasco for Shields straight up, I'd probably take that risk because Nolasco is dead money for 2 years anyways, and the upside of getting 1 good Shields year and a 1st round pick is a pretty good return for Nolasco. I just don't know if I believe that's all the Padres would want in return for Shields.
  10. One thing to note about Shields. He does have an opt-out of his current 3/63 deal after the 2016 season. Considering next year's crop of free agents is pretty thin and a guy like 37 year old John Lackey can still get 2/32, Shields could be one and done for any team that decides to acquire him. The fact that he can do that, and the team that owns him could get a QO decline, still makes him more valuable than Nolasco.
  11. I see 3 names that are automatics in the pen (Perk, May, Jepsen) and a lot of question marks with the other names. I understand your position Seth to only sign 1 FA to a multi-year deal and let the internal options battle it out to fill out the rest of the spots. I'm just worried that's going to be haunt the team like last year to try and count on too many unknowns. I'd prefer to sign 2 FA's so the Twins can have 5 trustworthy names in the pen, and fill the other 2 spots with whoever steps up from our internal options.
  12. You make a good point.. it would be an incredibly SSS so the stat you replied to doesn't have a whole lot of merit. Only a very short list of people I can think of.... Pablo Sandoval - guy has to be pushing 275 these days and still plays 100+ games a season at 3B Jason Heyward - Also helps that he's 6'5" so he's just a large man in general Nelson Cruz - Another big guy in the OF
  13. The fact that he's out of options cements my stance of not offering arbitration to him. Unless there's a pending deal in place to trade him this winter, then fine, offer arbitration. Personally I'd rather have an open competition between all of the young guys for the #5 spot this spring. And best case, I'd like to see Berrios up ASAP once the service time loophole has passed.
  14. I'm in the camp of non-tendering Milone. Whether he's at $4.5 million up to $7 million, the amount is still going to be significant enough where he will be favored over a younger player such as Berrios, Duffey, Meyer, etc. That's been the argument this whole time with Nolasco, Hughes, Santana, etc. that they're making too much money not to be in the rotation. In a perfect world he would be in the same role he was last year; in AAA until an injury happens. But the Twins will not operate like that with his pending salary next season.
  15. Alright, he's here! Now it will be interesting to see if a Plouffe trade is coming soon.
  16. It would have been nice to be the first team to pounce on a pitcher this offseason. Now the market is set, and the 3 other notable pitchers are all going to want more than $22 million a season.
  17. They had another QB commit to the team other than Croft?
  18. Per your comment on building a rotation around mid-to-low strikeout contact arms, the only Twins SP to have a higher K/9 rate than Zimmerman is Duffey on a SSS. So our staff is more "threatening" than the Tigers with Zimmerman, Sanchez, Norris, Verlander?
  19. I'm a little surprised that Claeys broke up the staff immediately when Kill left, after spending more than 15 years together. I hope he can find an offensive coach that can develop Croft and he can take over full-time at QB next year. He also really played the injury card this season, which is one of the oldest cliches in the book. Every single college team goes through injuries, and ends up playing kids that weren't expected to contribute. Just call it like it was, a failed season. Going into next year, I'm very intrigued with Brooks and Smith as the backfield tandem. The team will only go as far as the QB takes them, and I'm tired of Liedner.
  20. The way the bullpen is currently set up has potential, but it's still a little too risky for my taste. It's fine to have a role open for one of the young guys to step into. It's another thing to count on multiple young guys to come up and produce right away. I agree with Leviathan that the Twins need to make a significant investment in another arm. Then I can see this bullpen making big strides for next season.
  21. I wish Pinto and Achter well in their future. From the Twins perspective, both are not going to be huge losses.
  22. I'm with you on both Sipp and Lowe. Offer them both 2 year contracts and fill the rest with minor league contracts to see which RP rises to the occasion.
  23. I agree with Seth that signing relievers to 3 year contracts is not something I'd like to do. However, there needs to be some help brought in outside of the organization. Tony Sipp would be a guy I'd like the Twins to target as the LH out of the pen. I'd also like to find a way to acquire Storen like diehard mentioned before. That would give the Twins 3 great options for the 7-8-9 innings, and all 3 have closing experience in case if Perkins falters again. If some of the young guys get hot, then great, they can be rotated into the pen when they're ready. If we're coming into the season relying on Tonkin, Achter, or Darnell to step up, it's going to be another long season of a shaky at best bullpen.
  24. How does that old saying go, Even a blind squirrel? Enjoy the 1 year with Floyd, Iowa.
