  1. It looks like there are more people watching the rays in the tank than there are watching the Rays on the field.
  2. Rochester also scored 8 runs in the first inning this evening against Columbus. Brock Stassi hit a grand slam HR.
  3. In other news, the Burlington Bees beat the Quad City River Bandits 28-7 earlier today. Burlington scored 8 runs in the 1st, and 5 runs in three different innings. Burlington had two players who drove in 8 and 7 runs respectively, and Quad Cities had a pitcher who gave up 10 earned runs in 1.2 innings. https://www.milb.com/gameday/river-bandits-vs-bees/2018/04/20/541159#game_state=final,game_tab=,game=541159
  4. Not to be a statistics nerd or anything, but Tony Oliva played in 9 games in 1962 and in another 7 games in 1963. His first home run came in the 4th game of the 1964 season, not the 4th ML game he played in.
  5. Color me extremely surprised. Let's hope Molitor, Mauer etc will have have some good, long talks with Sano. And let's also hope Gloria Allred doesn't make an appearance.
  6. Sano gets suspended for 30 games, and goes 26/76/.245. Buxton starts All-Star game and makes a Huntersque catch 16/73/.298 with 40 steals. Kepler figures out how to hit lefties reasonably well 18/78/.279. Morrison doesn't quite match the hype but fills the DH spot capably 28/83/.255. Odorizzi, Berrios, and Lynn combine for 45 wins, 500+ innings and sub 4.25 ERA. Santana is almost an afterthought after Romero comes up just before or after the All Start game and has a 1970 Blylevenish debut. Rodney saves 35+ games but makes Twins fans wish Guardado was still the closer. Dozier looks for the big contract and hits 40+ HRs and gets his 100 RBI year. Mauer hits .310 and wins Gold Glove at 1B. Moya plays a much bigger role in the bullpen than anyone expects. It all adds up to 92 wins and missing the division title by 2 games, but they still get a Wild Card spot.
  7. 30 to 50 games--MLB can't afford to be seen as being lenient, even if there's no solid evidence of guilt. Such are the times we live in.
  8. The Lynn signing seems to me to be not unlike the Kenny Rogers signing in 2003--signed two weeks before the season started and was a solid addition to be the number 3 starter after Santana and Radke. I still don't understand why the Twins showed little to no interest in re-signing him for 2004. Let's hope it works out at least as well as it did in 2003 (31 GS, 13-8, 195 IP, 4.57 ERA).
  9. If you need only 4 starters how about having a 11 man pitching staff and have an extra guy on the bench?
  10. Frank Viola, Jack Morris and Tom Kelly might have an interesting take on this question.
  11. KIllebrew winning HR in bottom of the 9th against the Yankees in last game before 1965 All-Star game. Yankees had won 2 of first 3 games of series and were still in contention. That HR all but finished them off. We were in a boat on Lake Minnetonka listening to the game and almost flipped it over when Killebrew hit the HR.
  12. Hmmm, I think Baylor's and Hrbek's 1987 WS Game 6 home runs rank up there with Killebrew in 65 and Kirby in 91.
  13. Cautious optimism IF the starting pitching holds up i.e. Hughes comes reasonably close to last year, Nolasco bounces back, Gibson improves, Santana doesn't have a Nolasco type year, and whoever if the 5th starter does haflway decently. Oh, and it would be nice if Hicks finally takes CF by the horns and hits .250+ But it all starts with the starting pitching. See the 1977 Twins.
  14. Another old-timer may need to correct me, but I seem to recall that in 1965 Tovar almost missed the home opener at the Met because of massive flooding from the spring thaw that took out all kinds of roads. They had to fly him in by helicopter. In any event, Tovar was a critical part of the Twins between 1967 and 1971 and should be in the Twins HOF.

    42: A Review

"The beginning credits alert us that it was “based on a true story.” Really? Who knew! (Maybe there was a specific reason they had to include that, I don’t know.)" Perhaps the producers of the movie realized that a lot of people are clueless about what happened before they entered the world and that history didn't start on their birthday. For example, last year when there was so much talk about the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster there were more than a few youth who were quoted as saying they thought the movie "Titanic" was just a good story and had no idea it was based on something that really happened.
  16. 1 for 9 w/RISP and 12 left on is way too reminiscent of the last two years. But looking at the lineup it is hard to believe, as well being as almost statistically impossible, the Twins being as bad w/RISP as they were the last two years. Good to see Worley being able to adjust and keeping things close. Hope springs eternal. Win Twins!
