  1. IMO, this organization had a lot of issues when the new FO took over. I believe it's too early to grade them at all.
  2. The new Series on Amazon Prime, Jack Ryan, was pretty good.
  3. yeah, but overall it's not like he dominated the minors this year either. Not sure why he got promoted to AAA this season, honestly. I mean yeah, he Kd more and BBd less this year in AA than last year, but his WHIP was worse this year as was his ERA (don't see his FIP). One could argue that, overall, he did worse in AA this year than last year, but regardless. Not sure he earned a promotion to AAA much less the majors. Edit: His FIP in AA was pretty darn good this year, but over 4 in AAA.
  4. Haha, I know, right? Who knew Belisle was so important to this team's success? :-)
  5. I love me some Kershaw and Verlander too, but even the great innings eating starting pitchers get help from his catcher calling the game, the defense behind him, and the offense that scored enough for the team to win. Even the best pitchers can't win a game on their own.
  6. Well, the Cubs depth of true quality players is ridiculous. Maddon has been given options.
  7. In regards to Trout (or ANY one player) it's silly to think one guy can carry a baseball team. He doesn't pitch, he only plays one position (can't play other players position), and he is one of 9 batters (and likely close to 15 or 16 batters throughout the year) A team will likely use close to 40 players a season if not more. Baseball isn't basketball. Most of the time, baseball is about individual battles. One guy, no matter what myths are out there, doesn't get his team to playoffs or go far in playoffs.
  8. The only thing we know for sure is that the FO kept him on the team.
  9. Wait, are you saying Mauer isn't as good of a 1B as Austin or Garver? I can see where moving Sano to 1B makes sense (assuming we can get a ood 3B) And I can see where moving Kepler to 1B makes sense (if we can figure out our OF). But Austin and Garver? Based on what?
  10. As are you. It's a friendly discussion, nothing more. Our discussion won't have any effect of whether they sign him or not. And, personally, I'm fine either way. Part of me wants him to retire so he doesn't get another concussion and so the constant slamming of him slows down. The other part of me wants him to be signed to annoy those who do it If the Twins actually get a better option, that would be ideal. I doubt they will.
  11. It's just like players want to play all the time, the manager decides who plays. Like when Punto got WAY more starts than he probably should have had, that was on Gardy. Can't blame Punto for playing so much.
  12. The manager can advocate for a player all they want but the overall decision lies with the FO.
  13. Yeah, the only part of the quote that is true is he has a negative bWAR. And it needs to be put in context with other 1Bs.Anyone have the list of 1B dWAR for 2018 so we can compare 1Bs? Are there any 1Bs with a positive dWAR? The highest dWAR is like 3.4 with Matt Chapman. Lindor is like 2.2. Paul Goldy has a -.03. Machado is like -1.4. I know the DEF stat at Fangraphs, which compares defense of all players to each other (as opposed to their own position) ALL 1Bs are negative. Admittedly, I'm not someone who even likes oWAR, dWAR or bWAR from B-REF. I think Fangraphs does it better.
  14. I'm sure it has an effect, Levi, and it could be a decision based on what Molitor and the FO feel is best to keep him healthy. Absolutely sure that's a concern. But the overall point is when he is out there, he DOES have a positive effect on the defense, cause he IS a quality defender.
  15. The original discussion about Mauer's defensive numbers stemmed from this quote: 'btw, Mauer has a negative defensive bWAR for those that think his pressence helps the defense. The metrics disagree.' The Fangraphs metrics I provided earlier show that Mauer's presence at 1B DOES help the defense WHEN he's at 1B. DRS and UZR are counting stats and, obviously, with more time out there one would figure that those numbers would go higher (though not for sure). Problem is, he WAS on the DL AND with Molitor wanting to get other people time at 1B, it has affected Mauer's time at first. So, YES, Mauer's presence on defense DOES help the defense. There's no doubt about that. But he has to be out there for that to happen and for the counting stats like DRS and UZR to reflect that. He's a truly talented defensive 1B, he just needs to be out there more. It's one of my biggest issues with Molitor cause it's HIS decision who is out there, not Mauer's.
  16. we are middle of the AL in scoring. maybe this kind of strategy is why we aren't a bit higher...
  17. Per Fangraphs, Mauer, this year, is +1 DRS on defense, with a +2.1 UZR and +6.1 UZR/150. 26 1Bs have 550 or more innings at 1B. Overall, Mauer is ranked 2nd for AL 1Bs and 3rd for MLB 1Bs. So, compared to other 1Bs, Mauer is a top notch defender. One complaint I have with Molitor, is he needs to play Mauer at 1B more. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=1b&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=550&type=1&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 P.S., every 1B in MLB is negatively ranked on Fangraphs DEF overall stat. It's a positional adjustment. Gotta look at where they stand amongst other 1Bs, not all defenders. Kepler, on defense, is 3rd ranked RF in AL, and 4th in MLB. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=rf&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=550&type=1&season=2018&month=0&season1=2018&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Metrics kind of like both of them on D.
