  1. We are from Minnesota, we wouldn't actually say what we believed. Just be critical of anyone who does say what they believe.
  2. Just 3 years ago, 47% of the voters in Minnesota agreed with Hunter and voted against same-sex marriage. I hope we don't classify 47% of our population as horrible people. Hunter was a great Twins player, I'm glad he was able to finish his career here. Look forward to seeing him go into the Twins HOF.
  3. Didn't Sano start out the year hitting below .200 in April and really didn't start to heat up until mid-May? Considering he had missed all of last year, it's hard to fault the Twins for not bringing him up sooner.
  4. Why all the support for Hicks? Sure Schafer is hitting a very Hicks like .215 this year, but he did hit .285 last year and his defensive metrics were better than Hicks. Schafer is starting to hit better and the Twins are winning. Make Hicks show he can produce longer than a month in AAA. If he end up being just a 4th outfielder, there is no reason to bring him up. Schafer is not the answer, but don't fall in love with the player you thinks Hicks is and forget about the player he has shown to be. Next year he is out of options, so if keeping him in the minors helps, you have to do it this year.
  5. Good point on Pressly, in 2013 he had an ERA+ 106 and was rewarded with a trip back to the minors. The last time Stauffer posted a better ERA+ was in 2010 and Boyers was 2009. Of course Pressly isn't mid-30's. I think he needs a good attorney for an age discrimination case,
  6. Twins are continuing the youth movement by looking into 35 year old Rafael Soriano. Haven't we drafted about 50 college relief pitchers over the last 3 years that we could have been "fast tracking" but went with the converting them to starters approach? Really confused on the building process by Terry Ryan,
  7. If you have any hope for Hicks, it's best for him to play everyday in AAA than being a 4th outfielder. If he plays well in AAA, I don't see anything stopping the Twins from bring him up to be the full time centerfielder. If he sticks it up in AAA, there was no reason to give him a position in the majors even as a 4th outfielder.
  8. Not surprising based on the offseason moves, but disappointing. If really the worst case, with Milone and Pelfrey pitching just well enough not to make changes but not really good to improve the team. The Meyer situation is like Gibson a couple years ago. Ryan didn't want to bring him up because he was inconsistent. Then last year he was very inconsistent but he still performed better than Nolasco and as good as Santana (who if they had signed would have pushed Gibson to AAA). I think the year of experience is very valuable for Gibson and will help the teams future. The sooner they promote Meyers and let him work at the major league level, the better off the teams future will be, but looks like the Twins still are in love with the worst staff in the division.
  9. I think regression is unavoidable for Santana, but with his speed he should still have a better than average BABIP. If he can reduce the strike rate and get more balls in play, he still can contribute at the top of the lineup.
  10. The last 4 years have made the 1995-2000 look like glory years. Also, the last 10 years with Mauer have not been much better than the prior 10 years so I think the Twins would have been a lot worse without Mauer. And since Mauer only played 35 games in 2004, you really can't say he was a key member for the playoff run, which then make the total playoffs the same (3) over the two 10 year period. I think drafting Mauer was the right pick, but it is a very interesting thought about what Prior could have brought to the Twins in the early year.
  11. See he follow's the Hrbek offseason training model. For his baseball career, he didn't age very well either.
  12. You have to be careful comparing Mauer to other all-time catchers, he probably going to play other position more than catcher. Here's a listing of the 7 catchers with 2,000 hits and games played as catcher: Ivan Rodriguez 2,427 Ted Simmons 1,771 Carlton Fisk 2,226 Yori Berra 1,669 Mike Piazza 1,630 Gary Carter 1,954 Johnny Bench 1,742 Jason Kendall 2,025 Joe Mauer 920 Mauer is closer to Victor Martinez in the catcher category,
  13. They are not guarenteed: Win or lose, the player is awarded a standard one-year MLB contract with no "minor league split" salary or incentive/performance bonuses. Also, the contract is not guaranteed, so if the player is released during Spring Training, the club would only owe the player 30 days or 45 days salary as termination pay, depending on when the player is released. (A player on an MLB 40-man roster receives 100% of what remains of his salary if he is released during the regular season). http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3515 So they do have some options.
  14. With the recent signings, they have really committed to keeping a payroll above $100 million through at least 2017. In 2017, they will have about $70 million committed to 5 players with not counting Dozier in his second year of arbitration and Arcia in his 3rd year. I hope the commitment to these player pay off but I would be concerned about Mauer, Santana, and Nolasco being on the downside of the career and receiving big money.
  15. Adding wins through free agency cost about $7 million per win, so a to get to 85 losses, it will cost about $49 million. Ryan may have done it by spending only an additional $25 million. GM of the year.
  16. On the surface, it's hard to not like the Santana signing because he will improve the rotation. What I'm having a hard time understanding is what is the FO's plan. Last year we had one of the oldest pitching staff that is now getting older. After another 90 lost season, we should be building not plugging holes. If Mays and Meyers are not ready yet, it's a big miss by Ryan. We gave up two every day players for prospect that have not contributed and are already 25+. Worley was also received in the trade and released and he performed better than most of the rotation. Drafting college relief pitchers and trying to convert them to starter has not worked and now talking about maybe moving your best top level pitching prospect to the bullpen just doesn't give me confidence the FO has a plan. Just throwing stuff against the wall and hoping something sticks.
