  1. I like the comp to Andrew McCutchen. Although it is aggressive, I think by the end of the year, Buxton will match 'Cutch's rookie season stats (sorry, bad formatting... again).
  2. My bad for asking the comp to be a Twin... I don't care what team they play for. I just don't like the open-ended "I think the Twins should trade (player X)" without some understanding of what the poster feels the return should be.
  3. I guess I was specifically talking about the prospects you chose to discuss (Walker/Arcia, Polanco, and Stewart). For each of them (IMHO), you are already selling at a low point. I am loath to overly dramatize the negatives of our own prospects, but.. Arcia had a lost year in 2015; Polanco was steady at the highest levels of the minors, but did not have a breakout year offensively or prove that he is a MLB SS; and Walkers K rate has grown to mythic proportions while Stewart's K-rate has sunk to nearly the same degree (as per TD posters). I agree that the answer is prospects, but Wil Myers was the #4 prospect in baseball when he was traded. If you want to suggest trading Berrios or Kepler, I think it is a different discussion.
  4. All I am asking is that you put a Twins comp on what they would bring back. I personally would not trade Kyle Gibson for that group. Would you? I also agree that the '(t)hing with most prospects and their value is, they're worth more while they're still prospects'. But what I would add is that almost all prospects have very little value... for the very same reason that you are trying to trade them! I am sure Terry Ryan and his compatriots know very well what the failure rate of prospects is. In a world where Trevor Plouffe has very little trade value, Jorge Polanco will not move the needle at all. Again, I think we are better off keeping all of them and hoping some one of them exceeds expectations than trading them for a #5 starter or some other prospects.
  5. How much trade value do you think that group has? Do you think you could get Kyle Gibson for that group? Personally, I think Plouffe has very little trade value (the salary for the 4th year of arbitration is basically the value of a free agent). Walker/Arcia would get you a C-level prospect. Polanco's trade value would be depressed because of questions about his ability to play SS. And I like Stewart as a prospect but, as can be seen on his TD prospect page, he has enough warts that his trade value is at its lowest. I would rather keep them all and take my chances that "things have a way of working themselves out".
  6. Thanks for the great article, Parker. You do not project this kind of 'glass half full' philosophy very often. It is especially appreciated amongst the current tenor of TD posts. I also share your optimism on Meyer.
  7. I absolutely agree that he is not likely to be part of 'the plan' for the first half of the year, and if he makes the roster during that time it will be due to injuries/ineffectiveness of other relievers.
  8. So you think the Twins do not care about the Santana suspension because they didn't have to pay him? ... and the Mets would think it was a steal to get Bastardo on a 1/6 instead of a 2/12? I suppose they also would not mind losing Bastardo for BOTH post-seasons (if he is suspended mid-season)? I am not saying it should preclude the Twins from signing a player, I was just it would be a factor in my decision-making process. If it would not be a consideration for you, it is so noted.
  9. Because Bastardo seemed like such a good fit for the Twins (and because I haven't seen it discussed in this thread), I thought it might be good to remind everyone that he was suspended for 50 games in 2013 as a result of the Biogenesis scandal. I know the Twins don't sign many free agents anyway, but they also don't seem to target those who have been suspected or already suspended for PED use. I don't know if Jack can comment on whether prior PED use is another factor that is discussed when evaluating a free agent, but the possibility of a 162 game suspension would weigh heavily in my decision if I were GM.
  10. I still say if Duffey isn't in the Twins rotation, I would rather see him in the Twins bullpen rather than the Rochester rotation. We know he can work out of a bullpen and can also be effective for multiple innings. Of all the Twins pitchers, he is the one most likely to fit the St. Louis Cardinals mold.
  11. ... or, in a more general sense, have you been able to develop reliable metrics for Asian or European Baseball leagues? Or are those decisions directed solely by scouting teams?
  12. Great list... thanks for sharing! I would not argue too loudly about the placement of any of these prospects. Who would you pick at 11 (especially considering Park is included)?
  13. You conveniently left out any reference to their relative ability to play SS, and a comparison of Gordon at SS and Palacios at 3B (or 1B) is apples and oranges. Maybe you asked for a quick response so people wouldn't contemplate such vagaries.
  14. What happens if Berrios is deemed ready and starts the season with the Twins? Are you telling me that the rotation consists of Santana, Hughes, Gibson, Duffey and Berrios; and that Nolasco and Milone are in the pen or released? Silly or not, I think Duffey is most likely to start in the pen in that scenario. And can we really say it is 'silly' for an established starter to start the year in the rotation and make the 'better' youngster start in the pen when it happens in the MLB quite regularly? I am sure before the 2015 season started, many would have said that Travis May to the bullpen was also silly, but yet it happened. And it happened even though May wasn't the least effective starter at the time, because Paul Molitor is so silly. If he wasn't so silly, we might have made it to the postseason last year!
  15. I think one major omission on your list is Tyler Duffey. I don't think he has anything left to prove in AAA, and the rotatio already seems full. I know people would contend, as they do with May, that he is more valuable in the rotation. However, he has the pitches and previous experience to be a dominant force out of the BP. He was even effective against LHB. I think Nolesco (SP)/Duffey (RP) >>> Duffey (SP)/Nolesco (RP).
  16. IMHO, people who pencil Arcia in as a bench bat are playing 'fantasy baseball' in that neither his swing nor approach at the plate seem conducive to a part-time role off the bench. I also wonder whether he has the temperament needed. While it is the ultimate in SSS, he has an OPS of .584 as a PH in 12 AB as a PH in the majors (with 5 SO); and he has been even worse as a DH, with an OPS of .422 in 36 AB with 17 SO.
  17. No mention of Kepler as OF depth? If they do find a trading partner for Plouffe, I would think Kepler has as good of a chance (25-35%) as Arcia of being in the OF on opening day.
  18. Maybe you missed it... he was the first one listed under 'Extended Spring Training', with this description: In July of 2013, the Twins big international signing was outfielder/first baseman Lewin Diaz. His body type is often compared to David Ortiz and Ryan Howard, so first base was always the place he would most likely play. He spent 2014 in the Dominican Summer League. He came to the States in 2015. He played in 33 games for the GCL and hit .261/.354/.369 (.724) with seven doubles and a homer. He moved up to Elizabethton for the final 14 games and hit just .167 but hit three home runs. Power will be his game. He is most likely to spend the year in Elizabethton.
  19. I hope you don't mind that I ask, but what exactly do you mean by SWOLLEN? As in: Just had an impacted tooth removed, Can't get hands to touch when doing jumping jacks, Or, ala Rodney Dangerfield, has he been 'sitting a-round the house' all winter?
  20. Wow, what a thoughtful, well-spoken young man! I hope the beginning of the 2015 season wasn't too hard on him, because I personally think that having to struggle through a difficult season is really important for prospect development, especially for those in the top 15-30 range.
  21. ... sorry, this was a poorly worded attempt to remind people of the caveat which I thought you had presented numerous times in the past, that we (i.e. you) do the best with what you have at (y)our disposal. Maybe (probably) Han was speaking of concrete as 'visible' and I was interpreting it as 'absolute'.
  22. Two quick points: MLBTR indicates that "Trade Talks Around Jake McGee Intensifying", and links the Twins to the TB reliever. Do Alex Meyer and Tyler Duffey really have anything left to prove in AAA?The Twins could go into spring training with a penciled-in rotation of Santana, Hughes, Gibson, Nolasco and Milone (with May, Duffey, Berrios, Rogers and Dean:) as backups)Which could leave them with a bullpen of: Perkins Jepsen May McGee Meyer Duffey Fein (with Tonkin, Graham, Pressley, Rogers, Darnell, and O'Rourke as alternates)I think I would be happy with that bullpen.
  23. In terms of 'uncomfortable', doesn't anyone remember that Sano had never ostensibly DH'ed before? I also think we have heard from several people how hard it is to DH, and I equate 'hard' with uncomfortable. Not only that, but how many 22 yo prospects have come up straight from AA and been asked to DH? And Sano still managed an OPS+ of 146 (and was better as a DH than as a 3B). I am not worried (much) about the affect playing OF will have on Sano. And after seeing a 5'8", 225 lb Kirby Puckett play CF and RF, I am not too worried about Sano's size in the OF. He may indeed get hurt, but he could also get hurt at 3B (insofar as running into things, remember how Corey Koskie's career ended).
  24. We know how much pressure these guys are under to play for their home teams. It doesn't surprise me that the 'plan' should be that the Twins take the fall for Sano not playing during the regular season. And he may still be allowed to play in the Caribbean league playoffs if his team makes it.
