  1. For me, the money quote is: 5-10 minutes a game over a 162-game schedule (i.e. ~27 hours total) seems like it could make a huge difference in an attentive students game.
  2. Sorry... my tongue was firmly in my cheek when I typed that!
  3. Is that the dreaded 'inverted W' I see in Jake Reed's delivery?
  4. Sorry, I don't understand what you are getting at. I thought you were expressing displeasure with the quality of our minor league coaches because Molly could pick up a 'tell' much faster than they could. I certainly think this is a valid opinion. However, I was just trying to make the point that I, personally, am not surprised Molly is better... he could probably coach circles around each and every one of them!
  5. You are right, of course. But to me it is not surprising that one of the best base-stealers (and hitters) in the history of baseball is able to detect subtle flaws quicker than other coaches.
  6. I like the comparison of Mientkewicz and Kelly, but to me it is a little like comparing a pre-surgery Jose Fernandez with Mark Appel... TK was a managerial protege, having already coached in the minor leagues and being an MLB 3rd base coach (which was viewed as asst. coach much like bench coach is now) by age 36. OBTW, you are old enough, but I haven't run across many people who are big post-Gabriel Genesis fans... or is the title based upon something else?
  7. Why do you refuse to let other people express their opinions? They are not out of line, as several national writers point out the exact same thing. I get that you are in Walker's corner, and I am as well. Some prospects are just going to have to prove the 'experts' wrong at every level. You do not have to like it, but trying to over-shout your friends at TD is not going to change anyone's opinion... I think you have proved that beyond a doubt.
  8. Another great sign that the Twins have a lot of depth in the minors... Seth can't find room in the Top 30 for one of his personal favorite prospects! Seriously, though, I hope BA puts him in the top-30, as I would really like to read what they have to say about his defensive (and offensive) projection.
  9. You know we are heading in the right direction when it seems everyone should be higher than they are... we have 2 prosepects in the 41-50 range that earned player of the year honors for their league!
  10. I subscribe to the theory that it isn't just how many pitches (or innings), but how many high-leverage pitches that wear on a pitcher's arm. It follows (for me) that throwing 71 or 87 innings as an 18 or 19 year old pitcher on the fast track at low-A facing hitters 3-4 years older is a lot more strenuous than the same amount of innings at E-ton. We don't actually have pitch counts from CR, but it may be that Thorpe threw as many pitches in 71 innings to the more experienced hitters as he would have in 100 innings in rookie ball. Also, in looking back at 4 years of E-ton stats, Felix Jorge has the highest number of starts by a teenage pitcher at 12 (61 innings) so, even by that measure, playing at CR gave Thorpe 4 extra starts and 16% more innings, while Stewart got 9 extra starts and 43% more innings!
  11. I guess I disagree, to use them lightly would be to have them both pitch for E-town all year like most kids in their first full year.
  12. It will be interesting to compare the (potential) 2015 Rock Cats with the 1999 Rock Cats that had at least 6 position players that not only went on to have MLB careers, but each played for at least 10 years! This group includes: Torii Hunter, Doug Mientkiewicz, Jacque Jones, Cristian Guzman, AJ Peirzynski and Chad Moeller. Despite their lofty accomplishments, the only one of the bunch that was rated in the BA top-100 was Guzman at 68. There were several other position players that got cups of coffee in the show, as well as future coaches Chad Allen and Jeff Smith. The pitching corps was much less impressive, but still included 4 players with significant longevity: Mark Redman (10yr.), Mike Lincoln (9 yr.), Joe Mays (7yr.) and JC Romero (14 yr). Let the eternal debate over ceiling vs. floor begin yet again!
  13. Ugh, I thought the 'issue' was going to be having too many arms for the short playoff series!
  14. Hoping not to sidetrack the thread, and would be willing to open a separate one if there is a problem... In all our losing seasons, both TK and Gardy have repeatedly stated that, when facing a team in contention for the playoffs, they are compelled to put their best team on the field. How do others feel about this? How do you feel about it after I tell you that 21 of the final 29 games are against teams within 4 games of the playoffs? I happen to agree with this tenet, and I do not think that anyone on the AAA roster (not named Meyer) is an immediate improvement over their ML counterpart. I love and value player development as much as anyone, but (to me) this is one of those real world truisms that cannot be avoided. Therefore, I agree that the players should be called up, but there might not be as many ABs or innings available as we think.
  15. I will answer your question if, at first, you tell me what you think the 2016 triple slash numbers will be for Escobar, Nunez, Santana and Dozier. Their current numbers are: (I give up on trying to format it correctly, sorry) Player 2016 age AVG OBP SLG OPS Santana, D 25 0.323 0.359 0.485 0.844 Dozier, B 30 0.236 0.342 0.417 0.759 Escobar, E 27 0.279 0.323 0.408 0.731 Nunez, E 29 0.253 0.28 0.361 0.641
  16. First, I do not think he is a ML shortstop. Second, I don't know where the Twins slot him, but he is only 1 year older that Niko Goodrum and Anderlin Mejia (and 11 years younger than Bernier). And Polanco is now an uberprospect and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Michael. I think a successful Michael is a high AVG, high OBP guy who can handle the bat, steal a base and play above average 2nd base (likely not a good as Dozier, though). I would expect his game to be similar to Luis Castillo (the Twins version). That may be damning with faint praise, but I think that is a very useful role on a team full of (potential) sluggers like Buxton, Sano, Vargas, and Arcia.
  17. Who is the last slow-developing first round pick that the Twins traded? They held on to position players like Moses and Garbe as well as pitchers Ryan Mills, Adam Johnson and Kyle Waldrop until they were out of options (and even longer). And I think we are all happy that they didn't pull the trigger with Hunter or Span. Also, it's not like our DP combo is Knoblauch and Gagne (or even Guzman/Rivas !). I would posit that the 2016 opening day SS and 2B are not even on the current roster.
  18. 10K in 5 innings, with 2 hits allowed... o that all Twins pitchers would be afflicted with poor control today!
  19. I was reading through the box score, and noticed this sequence: two Kernels hitters we drilled with pitchesone Bandit was HBPGonsalves gave up a HR.I know you can read a lot into a box score (falsely), but when I saw that Gonsalves hit the first batter he faced after the second Kernel got plunked, it sure seemed like a statement pitch. One of the reasons I do not like retaliation is that I think it affects a pitcher's mind and control, perhaps like a HR derby affects a hitters mentality and swing. So I was not surprised to see this control-based pitcher give up his first full-season HR two batters later. Was anyone (i.e. JC, SDB or Dad) at the game, and can confirm or deny this hypothesis?
  20. I concur, PP. I love everyone's thought-provoking articles, but it is especially nice (and rare) to combine professional writing skills with insider information.
  21. Do the Twin's version of 'who would you trade for...' Eduardo Escobar: I don't think I would even trade one of our high A outfielders (Max Keplar or ABWII) for him. I think you would definitely have to go down into the 25-35 range. Maybe a 2013 version of Levi Michael. For pitching, I don't know that I would give up a Stephen Gonsalves or a 2013 version of Jorge Felix/Randy Rosario for him. Maybe you would do a Taylor Rogers or Tyler Duffy, but how valuable is that?
  22. Didn't know where else to put this since there is not an active Adrian Salcedo Adopt a Prospect page, but... Although he didn't warrant any more than honorable mention in July, Salcedo has put up very solid numbers for over three months! However, with an ERA that just now came down under 4.00, he has certainly flown under the radar this year. Since a rough 3-game stretch in May, he has pitched 35 innings over 19 games and only given up only 5 earned runs (1.29 ERA) on 28 hits and 13 W with 32 K. He throws hard and his GO/AO rate is also >2! I know the Twins have thought highly of him in the past, and he received a lot of prospect love earlier in his career. He is still just 23 and, according to Jeremy's big board, will be a 6-year ML free agent at the end of the year. Any chance he will be a September call-up and stay on the 40-man over the winter?
  23. Just to double-check... the Hu-dini name does not come from his style of pitching (i.e. junkballer who depends on fooling the hitters), does it? I thought Hu had a decent fastball (92-94 on the adjusted CR gun).
  24. Zach Jones pitching on back-to-back nights... looks like he is ready to return! The question is where he will go? He seemed to have mastered high A last year, and they have Burdi, Boer, van Steensel and T. Jones in their pen. It sure would be nice to see him in AA!
  25. Now maybe you are talking about Tyler Duffy? Tomshaw was the one who faced 20 batters in 3 innings!
