  1. When I read some of these comments, I get horrible flashbacks to my youth. "That's the way the game is played now" reminds me of when my mother would ask "If all your friends jumped of a bridge, would you do it too?". And she was right. It's a silly way to operate. If doing what everyone else is doing isn't working, then do something different. I believe (my opinion, not a statement of truth) that Kaat is correct that players are more comfortable with a routine and that includes knowing ahead of time that they are in the lineup. I also believe (again, just my opinion and not an absolute) that playing through an injury is stupid. Either sit on the bench or go on the IL until you are near 100%. If you have to use lesser mortals from the minors for a while, then do it. A healthy minor leaguer isn't much worse (in many instances) than an injured major leaguer. If they aren't, then your farm system sucks.
  2. The Twins have about 50-60 pitchers currently active in the minors. A sample size of Sands is not really a good argument for not bringing someone up.
  3. With Larnach "appearing" to have found his way, it's hard not to be a little excited about the years ahead. If Correa decides to stay, that would be great news. But even if he opts out after this season, Lewis is ready. Urshela, Speer, and Miranda will battle for 3rd and super utility. Polanco is still around for a few more years. Arraez can stay at first, DH, and Utility. The catching is adequate and the minors seem to have a couple of helpers on the way. The outfield with Buxton, Celestino, and Kepler is outstanding on defense and has the potential of being very good offensively. And if Correa leaves there will be a ton of available money for free agent starters and relievers if the Falvine pipeline doesn't come through. I'm going into town from Maine for a Class of '65 golf trip and will be at Target Field on Sunday July 17th. I hope there will be a few Twins still healthy enough to play.
  4. For a guy who won't make his MLB debut until Wednesday, Palacios had a decent game today. Scored a run, took a walk, and had no errors playing SS. I can't wait until he actually debuts!!! ???
  5. Absolutely agree that the front office should be on the phone continually. We have plenty of 2B and DH candidates to spare for a modestly good pitcher (or better).
  6. It's my birthday today and all I'm asking for is a few articles that don't mention the Rogers trade. It happened. It's a done deal. No backsies. Or to put it in plain English, quit beating a dead horse. It seems to me that whenever a discussion starts, the same old arguments get thrown out even if they really aren't relevant to the topic. Yes, the Rogers trade may have been awful, but that doesn't respond to the question: What to do about the bullpen? Given what the Twins have to work with, my thought would be to bring in as many minor leaguer relief pitchers as necessary to see if any of them can do the job. And please don't bother with the 40-man roster excuse. A very quick look at the current 40-man roster shows several players that are potential drops (Thielbar, Stashak, Strotman, Bundy, Pagan, Duffy).
  7. "Take one for the team" has a whole new meaning now.
  8. And you know for a fact that Lewis did not inspect the outfield wall in the five hours prior to the game? It must be nice to have that sort of access to Target Field that other mere mortals do not have.
  9. During the great Black's versus Kreutz's controversy around the turn of the century, I went to Lockhart and ate back-to-back similar lunches to make my own decision. My decision was that doing both was a big mistake. Oink Oink Oink...
  10. I was referring only to running into the wall and having to leave the game as being Buxton-like.
  11. For anyone who thought that Lewis might not able to play like Buxton, running into the wall should remove all doubts.
  12. Because I'm the first to offer a comment, let me list all the usual rantings so we can get them out of the way and discuss Kirilloff versus Lewis. 1. When is the incompetent front office going to get an Ace? 2. Why can't the incompetent front office trade for a bunch of Lopez type relievers? 3. Fire Baldo! 4. Trading Rogers was the #1 dumbest move of this century. 5. Why does Baldelli leave his pitchers in so long? (Or the opposite - why doesn't our idiot manager leave pitchers in longer? Obviously, he can't do anything right! As for Lewis or Kirilloff getting the call up if Kepler is IL'd, either is fine with me.
  13. Because Balazovich was mentioned above, I have a question. As I read columns about the Twins minor league pitching from 1500 miles to the east, I consistently hear that Balazovic is the top ranked pitching prospect (or close to it). But when I read the minor league summaries of games, I keep seeing him getting hit hard, only lasting a couple innings, and taking another loss. What is his story? Is he a great prospect or is he an over hyped prospect?
  14. I am not 100% certain but I think when Maddox was early into his MLB career, the radar gun was either a sundial or a hand-held stop watch. ?? In either case I don't think they were very accurate. But regardless of that, Maddox was a pleasure to watch. As were Warren Spahn and White Ford, both of whom I would call op of the rotation. But ACE????? I don't know.
  15. You missed the point. It's an opinion, not a fact. If Bremer also said the same thing, it's still an opinion.
  16. I think the term "ace" is a meaningless title because no one can define it. It means different things to every person. I really prefer "top of the rotation guy" as the person you want to trade for. I don't have metrics to prove who is this pitcher but to me, it's the guy you send out every 4th game (oops, showed my age there, didn't I), I mean every 5th, 6th, or 7th game with a lot of confidence that the game is winnable. Sonny Gray might be the Twins' top of the rotation guy. But the good thing is, he could easily become the "almost top of the rotation guy" if the Twins trade for a Montas or Castillo. None of the three should probably be in a conversation about "aces" but they sure would strengthen the team.
  17. Maddox was an "ace" but he did not have electric stuff. His stuff was more solar powered and relied on pinpoint accuracy.
  18. This is what infuriates me. Comments like "he could have easily gone at least another inning, probably even finished the game" stated as god-given truths when they are nothing more than one person's opinion. There is also the scenario where he comes back out for the 8th inning and gets shelled or injures himself. And comments like "it's time to deal both of these guys and load up with Lopez types.". First, who is going to take Theilbar and Duffy? And if anyone did, what would be the return? A ham sandwich and a bag of chips? And second, who are all these Lopez types that can be loaded up? Having said all this, I agree that improvements are needed but some degree of reality should be included. How many (and which) prospects would be needed to trade for Lopez? Is Baltimore even interested in moving Lopez? I have no idea. Hopefully, the front office has an unlimited calling plan and is asking Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and other similarly positioned teams who might be available right now for some help in a year or two.
  19. And in other news, last night in Milwaukee, Hadar pitched his 30th consecutive scoreless inning in relief.
  20. The final out was mentioned several times so I went to YouTube for highlights. Yikes... What a rifle to 1st after the out at second. With all the speed, velo, exit measurements, why not a "how fast was that throw to first" measurement? And not just a rocket, but with perfect accuracy. Wow..... By the way, I like defense.
  21. Be careful. I think it is against Twins Daily bylaws to complement the front office for making an off-season signing.
  22. Your comment "if we sneak in" says it all. Adding one ace to a team that might sneak into the playoffs isn't going to make much difference.
  23. You added two aces. Why not add four or five? The post I quoted said the Twins needed an ace. That's singular. And my response is that one ace doesn't move the needle (in my opinion - I refuse to make my opinions sound like etched in stone facts like so many on this site do).
  24. Steve Carlton was a four-time Cy Young winner and what most would consider an ace. His best year was 1972 when he went 27-10. His team still lost 97 games. An ace does not guarantee anything except once every five or six days, you got a pretty good chance of winning. I would rather have a good chance everyday with a starting staff of Ryan/Ober/Gray types.
  25. People "don't seem to realize that" because so many at Twins Daily think that 1B is a throw away position. By that I mean they think any knucklehead can be put at first base because it is soooo easy. I spent many years playing first base and I can testify (can I get an amen!!!) that the footwork can be complicated (and no one uses the proper technique any more - a topic for another time). A good defensive 1B can save a lot of errors.
