  1. Interesting response. There were 11 players this year with an OPS of over 900, and only two of those players were corner outfielders. So you want the Twins to pick up either Mookie Betts or Christian Yelich? That's the entire universe of players that fit your criteria. Best of luck with that.
  2. In the past 1.5 seasons Polanco has 31 errors at SS. He had 35 errors in one year in the minors, 28 errors in another. Before this year I thought he could get better at SS. He can't. You just don't want him out there late in a close game, and that sucks because you also need his bat. His error rate at 2B in the minors is just as bad. We keep throwing 2B out there as an option (probably because a few scouts have thrown it out there as an option), but it's not a solution. He sucks at throwing the ball, period. At SS, he's next to Sano who also has a high error rate. That's a big hole. At 2B, he creates a hole where you definitely don't want a hole. If we are concerned about keeping Polanco's bat in the lineup -- which seems to be the concern in this article -- trade Kepler and move Polanco to the outfield. The problem there is you are trading Kepler's power for an overall better bat but with less power. That's fine, the Twins are sure to have some power over the next few years. Let's face it, Polanco profiles closer to Denard Span than he does Derek Jeter.
  3. The Twins had a really nice set of relief pitchers in 2018, but for some reason they chose to use arms that were not as good. They didn't know who they had. I'm not sure what metrics they were looking at but it wasn't anything common and each move made the staff worse overall. Maybe Molitor going will fix the problem. I would give caution to the team to not overreact but I suspect overreacting is the plan. They should add two relievers but they don't need a complete overhaul. They still need a top shelf starter and a couple of nice vets to slap the ball around.
  4. I dunno, man. There is footage of him doing batting practice in DR for prospective teams. He had a huge entourage, even then. That's a red flag. Which other Twins have giant entourages, or entourages at all?
  5. DR is very corrupt so it could be none of those. But, knowing that (and I'm sure he knows this), he probably shouldn't have been out at 3am.
  6. The Twins don't have to trade anybody to get better if they don't want to. They have $69,000,000 coming off the books this year, more than half of the 2018 payroll. They have a huge wad of cash to spend if they just simply want to spend the same as last year. The team doesn't have many needs so they can get three or four beefy players with that $69M and stop dinking around on the margins.
  7. On one hand, it's great to see some love for Garver after seeing so many forum posts being down on him throughout the year based on his slow start. On the other hand, if his numbers are the team's RoY, this team is in trouble.
  8. Sano and Buxton are dirt cheap players. Yes, the Twins should NOT be dependent upon them. The two of them should be supplementing (and continuing to learn from) other good players who are being paid what they are worth. This doesn't mean Sano and Buxton are not important parts of the team, cornerstones of the foundation and the future. It means that with the two of them and their low salaries, you can pick up other people too.
  9. Jim Thome is bored out of his mind right now. He lives in west-suburban Chicago and has been a pollution activist because of a high-polluting factory near his neighborhood. His activism woke up the Governor-Without-A-Pulse when it was pointed out to him by Thome that this is a Republican-voting district. In a rare sign of life for the Governor, he wants the plant closed before the election.
  10. Don't shoot the messenger. Also, you owe me a beer when they Twins announce Banister as the next manager.
  11. Banister (we will have to learn how to spell his name!) was hired by the Rangers because he is an "analytical yet personal" manager. He purportedly was to use "analytics" to make his decisions while using his people skills to mentor. Banister is exactly what this front office says they are looking for.
  12. Good move for the team. I have nothing but good things to say about Molitor as a person, as do all of us, but he was only about 75% of a baseball manager. I hope he sticks around. I imagine Jeff Banister, fired a couple of weeks ago by the Rangers, will be the next Twins manager.
  13. Astudillo can play any position and he might be better than anyone the Twins could pick up. Either trade Garver to keep Astudillo under C (which seems daft as he would be part time there) or keep both of them and Astudillo becomes the new primary 1B with some spotting by Garver. Seeing as Astudillo gave the Twins an "extra player" who can play any position, they simply need to choose where to put him. 1B seems the safest option.
  14. I think calling him a "hero" is the problem in a nutshell. He's not a hero, and I think if people had never framed him as such there would never have been any kind of backlash. Every "hero" has his or her detractors. He is/was a good player. I think he was "clutch" and I think the $ wasn't a real problem. When it comes to leadership, the story back in the day was he turned around Morneau back when both of them were single. But since then there have been no such stories. I doubt he was much of a leader in the clubhouse, though I have zero doubts about his willingness to help people out (and maybe that's how some of you define leadership). Mauer "peaked" at a typical baseball age, but not at a typical age for a HOFer. The question is did he do enough before his decline. I think he did and I don't say that as a Twins fan. As a Twins fan I would say he DOESN'T deserve HOF consideration as he has been so underwhelming for so long, but looking at his peak numbers (and even his overall numbers) they are astounding. This is a rare case where being in a small market might help his chances to get in the HOF. Out of state writers will look at his stat sheet and see a HOF-worthy player without being burdened by having sat through his years of mediocrity on a daily basis.
  15. I would have gone with Escobar or Rosario. It always felt like Gibson was on the cusp over the past three years.
  16. It would be interesting to see which players had the biggest home/away splits.
  17. I cried three times last week too. Each time Belisle took the mound.
