  1. If memory serves, David Stern personally recommended David Kahn. I am not sure why the commisioner would be a great resource as to the aptitude of GM candidates. I think talking with well regarded GM's about who they recommend under the and why would be a better use of time.
  2. Regarding a search firm, they are not perfect. But I am guessing they have a rolodex of qualified candidates already established from past searches. And if given the choice between a search firm and DSP/Pohlad running a search, I am going search firm every time. Keep in mind that they are not completely outsourcing the process. The search firm is basically providing some names and an introductory calls with candidates to determine interest, then making recommendations, i.e. here are the five people we recommend you interview and why, who referred them, etc. My general rule is if things are going good and a guy retires, then my bias is in house. When things are not going good and the guy gets fired, the clear bias is outside. A candidate who has worked as the #2 the last 7 years should not get a ton of consideration. We have more losses than 28 other teams over the last 5.5 years. I can't think of one executive under TR that has been plucked from another organization. As others have noted, we have not heard Antony's name natioanlly considered for a single job.And we are viewed nationally as a bottom third on the analytics front and we are in a game that continues to rely on analytics more and more. Is it the only factor and the end all be all? No, but it should be a factor.
  3. That would not at all be surprising. My gut tells me the Twins put an analytics department in place because not having one would have made for bad PR. It is likely understaffed, with less pedigree, and under utilyzed relative to our competition.
  4. I agree completely. I would want the new GM to come in and assess every person on the staff. Growing the analytics department and adding resources here, with outside talent would obviously be a huge priority of any GM I can support. It could be that Goin is an extremely bright guy who if given authority would be very valuable. But Terry never listened to him. I really don’t know. What does irk me is that the Twins stood up an analytics department years behind many other teams, then gave the head job to an internal person who I believe started out in ticket sales. The insular culture needs to stop with a new GM. Like the Bill Smith hire. And how Antony believes he should be a candidate. Please, please stop. If this was the Cardinals or another well run organization maybe you do stay in house after the GM retires. But we are miles from there.
  5. I was referencing this portion of the article "Given his success in business world....it is inconceivable that he is so tone deaf..." I am simply suggesting that we don't know whether or not he has been successful in the business world. That seems to be factual in my opinion. We have very few concrete examples of his contributions to the Pohlad business or even what he has done. That isn't neccesarly a bad thing and doesn't mean that he has not been beneficial, maybe they feel no reason to share what he has done, his role with company x, y, or z. But it looks like he was on his own for three years after college when he worked in public accounting, then he joined the Twins as an analyst. It looks like he has some involvement in other family businesses as well. All we really know is that his tenure as CEO has been a real tough stretch and we have articles here suggesting nobody trusts him to make the right call on about anything.
  6. You have to love an emphasis on athleticism. It brings up so many questions. What is athleticism? How is it measured and how does that correlate to MLB success? And why does a 6-1 200 pound guy capable of both hitting 30 HR a year and playing SS not qualify as athletic? Are Nelson Cruz or Miguel Cabrera considered athletic? Bartolo Colon? David Wells? CC Sabathia? I bet Ben Revere is considered really athletic though.
  7. But at the same time people here seem to buy it. It seems like it is generally accepted that he has a role in hiring the GM AND doens't have any say in baseball matters. I can't square this circle.
  8. I don’t know that we have any proof that Jim Pohlad has had a successful business career. We know that his Dad was a self made billionaire and he passed away in 2009. As a part of that, Jim has basically taken over the baseball franchise during a time when it has failed spectacularly. Jim was also put in charge of some portion of the family business, but we really have no read on how they did under his control. Based on everything I have seen with the Twins, I find it almost impossible to believe the guy would have had a successful business career without getting things handed to him. Giving St. Peter a say in the GM, learning through media guides, leaving Terry here so long, meddling in the decisions at the same time you are trying to attract a new GM…..these are not the kind of traits successful people have.
  9. I think Beane operates that way because of payroll limitations. His payroll is typically 25m or so lower than the Twins. I will go as far to say if every major league team had a choice between Terry and Beane, every team would pick Beane
  10. We are at a disadvantage. No doubt. But Clevelad has a very well regarded front office. Detroit had one of the best for a long time. Epstein went to Chicago (although from Boston). And a few of these are a high enough profile job. But a lot of #2's want to be a #1. My hope is that a candidate emerges as the clear #1 who if from the Cardinals, A's, Indians, Cubs, etc. and that person demands and receives full control over the front office and coaching staff.
  11. I guess I don't understand how a guy that doesn't deal much with the baseball side of things has a say in who the GM will be. That is basically the biggest baseball side of things decision, no?
  12. Seth I think most would agree that you have been the most positive and supportive of the Twins front office on the site. So to hear you say this shows, at least to me how little confidence there is in both Jim Pohlad and Dave St. Peter.
  13. I would love to call you cynical. But you are likely right. And I think the reason why Molitor can' be fired is he is under contract. This is not what successful teams do.
  14. I bet this is accurate. Seth threw this out there in his article today too
  15. I think you are spot on Seth about why TR resigned when he did. To give Antony an audition.
  16. Rather than start the process now, I would rather see the Pohlad's pay an outside consultant to provide a detailed analysis on the organization and provide feedback of where the issues lie. Based on those findings, I would have them recommend some names on who could catch us up. Because I have to be honest, I don't think these guys understand how far we are off as an organization. If we are jumping into the hunt now, I would reference the analytics ranking below. I don't understand the Angels candidate. Poor record. High payroll. Poor minor league rankings. Middle of the road at best analytics ranking. http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/12331388/the-great-analytics-rankings
  17. Well. It looks like Antony wants the job, based on his comment today. I really hope they don't go down that road
  18. I don't agree with that. You say I am going to hire the best GM we can and who coaches is up to them Or you can hedge a little bit and say I would keep Molitor around but the new GM will have control over the entire staff
  19. The statement by Pohlad that the new GM can't fire Molitor is really disturbing. Isn't that kind of like saying he knows better? Also that off the bat isn't a good recruiting statement by the owner. Sends up a red flag that he will meddle
  20. I am referencing sending Berrios back to AAA after four starts, Chargois after one appearance
  21. I also think the timing could have been based on the playing time/quick leash of young prospects and the fact that guys like Nolasco are still around. It would not shock me if this has been a source of disagreement between Terry and ownership. The job of the GM is to quickly shift gears when you drop out of contention and focus on the future. By almost any measure, Terry gets a really bad grade here. We will likely never know for sure, but if we see a rash of promotions (Berrios, Chargios, etc.) and a few more DFA’s in the coming days then I think this could be the case.
  22. The Pohlads selling would be more beneficial then firing Terry
  23. I agree. The most obvious example is in the NFL. Where teams fire their coach after week 17 and all the sought after talent are the O and D coordinators in the playoffs.
