Article: Twins Extend TC Bear Through 2023
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's a terrible indignity, for the inventor of the baseball shoe, to be forgotten in this way.- 26 replies

Article: Twins Extend TC Bear Through 2023
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, I was searching "feral cat births" earlier this morning, but this article did not appear in the results, so, yeah not really.- 26 replies

All true, I just prefer to see these extensions as the team and the player believing in each other. In the unlikely event Gordon ever "forces the issue" on Polanco, it will mean Gordon has trade value again, and can be traded just as well as Polanco. By the way, good job using Gordon and Lewis in the same sentence. I like these extensions the more I think about it. Contractually they are not earth shattering, but I think it speaks to a vision and commitment.

About another prospect, you said stats are just a piece of the puzzle. Here, you seem to be saying that stats alone will be what figures in his promotion. Can you clarify for us mortals when we're ok to consider stats, and when we're not?

Article: Extension Time?
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems odd that the front office would come out and announce extensions before the extensions have been formally agreed to by the players. We all have our preferred and less-preferred players we'd like to keep around, but even though I like Taylor Rogers, I don't think a Rogers or Polanco extension is going to fire anybody up or be considered a success as the LENIII article is implying. So let's hope it's one of the big names who gets extended, one of the names in the original post on this thread.- 62 replies

I'm piggybacking on this comment. I think batters are just better than they used to be. Maybe pitchers don't throw many more pitches in a game than yesteryear (I don't have any data at my fingertips) but I think the game is just better, and a little more thought needs to go into those pitches. An extra few seconds for each pitch doesn't hurt an at-bat, but it sure adds up by the end of the game. I think the best way to speed up the game is to empower younger umpires to keep the game moving, and consider that when promoting them through the levels. Younger players will be accustomed to a slightly faster pace as they themselves are promoted. Nothing like an umpire pointing at the pitcher to get the batter's attention (or vise versa). I think it's already in the rule book that a ball or strike can be called for delay of game. That's to say nothing of when runners are on base. I am against any rule limiting throws to first, and I'm not sure how you would prohibit a pitcher from stepping off the rubber and resetting, which slows the game down. All that said, the pitch clock isn't really the eyesore I was afraid it would be, so that can stay.

Sources are now saying that Falvey is offering the kid the rookie cards of Nationals players Danny Espinoza and Tanner Roark, along with a 2017 Chris Heisley card, all of which were still available and for a much better deal than the Harper card.

How quickly you forget the Trade Deadline Championship they won last July-August -
That seems to be the consensus on those guys. Opinions will vary and change over time.

I'm not disagreeing with you or the other poster that Pittsburgh got a better (ahem, significantly better) return from Houston than whatever Minnesota was thought to be offering or willing to offer. The conversation for Cole never really took off here, not sure why not, since he was obviously available. I'd like to see the Twins play in this trade market, and frankly I'm surprised they haven't yet. Kirilloff, Larnach, Rooker, probably each of them could headline a trade for major league talent. The chances of all three making it are slim.

In the Gerrit Cole example, the prospects mentioned were not "low-value" a year ago, and Pittsburgh was looking to shed salary. This was a specific situation. It looks lopsided to you in hindsight, but a year ago, it looked a little more equal. To your statement that the Twins fan's "main conceit ... is that if the Twins were just smarter, they could convert low-value minor leaguers into quality major leaguers" -- that is exactly what they did with Palacios and Odorizzi.

It's possible. It's also possible that they are just very conservative with prospects, like the previous FO, and aren't pursuing trade talks like these. Hard to know. I doubt they "ran the numbers" and thought the offer wasn't any good. It's frustrating to me that they aren't playing in this particular trade market. It's my feeling (without any data) that it's ultimately going to be to their detriment to forego opportunities like those.

Well that's the thing. There's no way of knowing for sure. Maybe when Thad Levine's tell-all memoir comes out, another 20-30 years from now.
