    Last year's team was 44-61 on August 1. They've improved to become a .500 team. No, they're not leading MLB in wins but it's still a massive improvement and a lot more fun to watch.

    Unless you think the Twins would non-tender Castillo they would have him on the team next season. I'd be much more interested in Jose Miranda for Pablo Lopez.

    Mahle has made $4M less in arbitration than Castillo. That (and his bloated 2022 ERA) sets him up for a smaller arbitration award next season. I think Mahle might be open to a contract extension if the Twins obtain him.

    The beauty is the Twins have several more options than Steer to bet on. Steer looks good but so do Encarnacion-Strand and Edouard Julien and even though he has been struggling of late I wouldn't bet against Austin Martin and his talent. That's just the Double-A infielders.

    What you'll really need is production from the pitcher they get in return for Miranda. They'll be fine in the infield as long as Lewis can play SS. The Twins have an opportunity to trade "studs for studs" with an infielder - whether that is Kirilloff, Arraez, Miranda or even Polanco. This isn't a vet for prospects deal, this would be rebalancing the roster to address shortcomings on the pitching staff using depth from the infield. Beckham is a nice insurance depth piece for 2022 but he has no future with the team (or really any team) beyond using him now when he's playing well. I'll put it another way - I'm sure Miranda is going to be the better player over the next 5 seasons but Beckham is playing well right now and might be the better player in the month of August.

    The Twins could also include Miranda in a trade, call up Beckham and not worry much about their infield bench production.

    Garlick is not someone they should worry about losing. Good bench player but those are not that difficult to sign. Cotton, Romero and Coulombe are pitchers who they should be trying to replace with better pitchers. Dobnak hasn't pitched in 2 consecutive seasons. He might never pitch again. I believe they can still cut him at the end of this season and he won't have enough service time to reject a minor league assignment. That's a no-brainer. Get him off the roster and back to St. Paul. Nobody is going to pick up the $6.75M remaining on his contract.

    Neither of those guys, but Pablo Lopez from the Marlins is supposed to be on the block and they're looking for bats.

    I don't get the "Miranda can't play 1B because he's a 3B" opinion. If you can play 3B you can learn to play 1B, it's less demanding. He may be less familiar at 1B right now but I'm sure he can learn to play it as well as he plays 3B. I don't think Miranda is all that great at 3B anyway. Total Zone says he's a lot worse at 3B than 1B. BIS disagrees but neither has enough innings to stabilize and neither one says he's a good fielder.

    His options should all remain considering he's never been on the 40 man roster. If there isn't any development left then I guess he's not going to make it. His bat isn't good enough to start in the big leagues and there are a lot of utility infielder options for teams every offseason. Look at Tim Beckham, for example. Beckham is destroying AAA pitching and can't get a call-up.

    The Twins would have to be braindead stupid not to trade Correa for Soto. Soto is the better player and has several years of team control remaining. The only value Correa would have for Washington would be to trade him to a different club since he's opting out after this season. If you look at MLB trade values, Soto is valued at 177 and Correa at 15. That's how overwhelmingly terrible this trade would be for Washington. If I owned the Nationals and my POBO tried to make this trade I'd veto it and fire him immediately. Then I'd fire anyone who didn't say it was a terrible idea when it was discussed. The difficult part of a Soto trade is there is almost no way for the Nationals to recoup that much value. For the Twins to get close to that value in a Soto package they'd have to include Joe Ryan, Royce Lewis, Jose Miranda and either Alex Kirilloff or Trevor Larnach.

    Palacios and Steer are starting at the correct level for their development. Palacios almost has a 750 OPS in AAA. Steer has been playing well but he isn't owning AAA like Kirilloff did. His batting line is actually a little worse than Caleb Hamilton.

    No. I think the Pirates lost 5 guys one season (which was inexcusable because their MLB team was awful).

    One more reason to be glad the trade deadline is nearly here. People will quit posting this idea soon. Or maybe they won't. Maybe every week for the rest of the season someone will make a "Should the Twins have made a Correa trade at the deadline?" post. Maybe we can re-hash the Delmon Young trade every week for the next forever too.

    Beyond the players that need to be added there are players who are already on the 40 man roster but not near contributing: Enlow, Strotman, Henriquez and Contreras are unlikely to help the Twins this season or next but they could get a shot with a different team.

    Trading him for nothing would be a huge mistake. Trading him for a good, young pitcher like Joe Ryan would be a great idea. The player(s) they get in return determines whether or not it would be a mistake. The Twins have too many infielders to have them all in their plans for the next 3 seasons. They can't keep all of Polanco, Arraez, Kirilloff, Lewis, Miranda, Urshela, Steer, Martin, Julien and Encarnacion-Strand. Teams that are selling in July aren't looking for veterans like Polanco and Urshela, they want young players with 5 seasons of control or more.

    Miranda is a much more likely trade chip than Urshela. Sellers don't want rentals. The Twins have some young players who could play every day on a developing team - Miranda and Celestino top the list.

    I think I'd be more interested in obtaining Ryan Tepera from the Angels than Syndergaard. Both would be okay.
