  1. One fun thing about long-term free agent contracts is the team can depreciate them and shelter money from taxes. They get double counted as an expense and an asset.
  2. Seager is the contract Boras is trying to beat. 10 years $325M. The Twins already spent $35M on Correa so 9 years $290M would match that number and 10 years $300M would be better than what Seager did last year.
  3. The A's were probably more profitable than the Padres last season.
  4. "14 teams broadcast on Bally Sports affiliates, four on NBC Sports Regional Networks affiliates and four on AT&T SportsNet affiliates. Meanwhile, the New York Mets are broadcast on SportsNet New York; the New York Yankees are on YES Network; the Los Angeles Dodgers are on Spectrum SportsNet LA; the Chicago Cubs are on Marquee Sports Network; the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals are on MASN and MASN2; the Boston Red Sox are on NESN; and the Toronto Blue Jays are on Sportsnet." NBC regional broadcasts the Giants, White Sox, A's, and Phillies. AT&T Sportsnet broadcasts the Astros, Pirates, Rockies and Mariners. Both should bid for Twins games.
  5. Would rather have Max Kepler with his contract than Cody Bellinger with his new contract.
  6. You can either pay retail for "proven" relief pitching or you can make your own. Ask Los Angeles how "proven" relievers Ryan Tepera and Aaron Loup worked out for them. I'm not thrilled that the Twins are getting outspent 2-1 by the small market Padres but that's the reality.
  7. Vazquez will make the pitching better. It might be the cheapest way to improve the rotation and the bullpen.
  8. Everyone is printing money. Only a few teams are actually spending it to make the team better.
  9. Cleveland gets better. The Twins are falling behind at the moment.
  10. I wouldn't be livid if they traded Arraez for Corbin Burnes, Julio Urias or Pablo Lopez. In fact, I'd be livid if they had a chance and didn't.
  11. Boras is going to get Correa more than Turner got. That's his whole motivation.
  12. Considering how much "proven" relievers are getting, I'd be looking for failed (or old, injured, etc) starters to add in bulk. Mike Minor, Wade Miley, Rich Hill, Ryan Yarbrough, Aaron Sanchez, etc. Any of them could be the next Jorge Lopez. Here's another example: Chad Kuhl. He has been a 5th starter for several seasons and isn't getting any younger. His fastball is well below average in the rotation but could play up in the bullpen if he adds a couple MPH. His slider is decent and he gets a lot of spin on his curveball (though his curve does get hit hard when it is poorly located). Get him to stop throwing his awful sinker (which he threw 44% of the time) and his changeup (which gets hit like crazy) and focus on what he does best.
  13. Looks like the going rate for 1 WAR has increased to $10M, at least for the large market teams.
  14. I also would rather have a player for 11 years instead of 10 given the same money. This is basically a "Buy 9 years, get 2 free" contract.
  15. Is Toronto going to send back one of their 3 catchers? If not, then he stays put. I'd only trade him for a different major leaguer this offseason, not for prospects.
  16. You have to have some serious problems with loss aversion to feel "stung" by losing Akil Baddoo.
  17. People love drafts. RE: Tyler Wells, the Twins decided to grab Ian Gibaut off waivers and keep him on the roster instead. That looks like a bad decision in hindsight.
  18. Agreed, but there is also going to be a lot of noise in SB numbers. The pitcher matters, the runner matters, catchers only get about half the games for a team. With Jeffers you're talking about 38 stolen base attempts in 2022. Nobody would expect OBP to tell the whole story after 38 at-bats. With that small amount of data you're probably better off with a stopwatch measuring pop time and estimating. Even for his career it's 103 stolen base attempts. You can get some information about batting after 103 at-bats. Then we have the unknown of how Jeffers would do if he stopped setting up with a leg out and set up in a crouch instead to stop the running game when there is a fast baserunner.
  19. If they trade Polanco it would be to open 2B up for Arraez. I'm not sure what Seattle would send back in return. Andres Munoz?
  20. A strong defensive catcher who hits .250 is a borderline All-Star. The league hit .243 last season.
