Have been a huge fan of Gonsalves since the Twins picked him. If he continues to pitch well he has the best opportunity to move to the big club first as he is left handed and it seems the Twins are always looking to get a lefty or two in the rotation. Really a lot of great pitching prospects in the system right now. That big grouping in High A is gonna push that excellent pitching all the way to AAA and then MLB. Most of those guys look to have the stuff to make it if they don't get injured along the way.

Man if Gonsalves hadn't given up three runs in the first inning of his first game he would have a sub 1 ERA. He needs to be moved to AA. The more time he spends there the more likely he can help the big club next year. Does anyone know if Romero and Thorpe are ready to pitch yet? For promotions to happen they need someone to step in at Low A and move someone from Low A to High A.

Article: Rotating the Rotation: Is Jose Berrios Coming Up Soon?
Dman replied to dwade's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yep I think a lot of people on here felt that way last year. Somehow the Twins saw the Value (i.e. two years of control) for themselves and apparently didn't want to give that away. If the guys in AAA keep pitching well and they move Milone to the pen that value will be gone. Not that is was much to begin with after all we got him by trade off of a waiver claim, and his peripherals are not great so i don't think the Twins were going to get much for him anyway. If Milone doesn't pick it up in the next couple of starts maybe the Twins will make a move sooner than I think but they seem the patient type to me. I think Berrios or Meyer would look better in his spot just have to wait and see what they decide to do and when.- 117 replies

Article: Rotating the Rotation: Is Jose Berrios Coming Up Soon?
Dman replied to dwade's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think Tommy Milone is the future for the Twins. I just think the FO is going to give him more time to straighten out especially since they demoted him to AAA last year and he was lights out down there. If they can trade him right now I think they should but again I think they will be patient. They will play things out and see where they are by June or July and then make the tougher decisions. Lot's of young pitchers seem to struggle when they hit the Majors. I think Trevor May walked about half the batters he faced when he first came up. Gibson wasn't great either. Duffey was pretty good but had a tough first game out there and got sent down. I just think odds are there is an adjustment period. How long is anybodies guess but usually there is one.- 117 replies

Article: Rotating the Rotation: Is Jose Berrios Coming Up Soon?
Dman replied to dwade's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like most everyone else I would like to see the young guys up because they are this teams future and they need the experience to get better. Why waste a year on the young position players learning and then next year on Young pitchers learning their craft? Just bite the bullet and move forward as fast as you can. And yet I get why the FO won't do it. First there is the small sample size for the MLB and MILB pitchers involved. Second the FO needs wins to put people in the seats to pay for the team so its not easy to go with the young guys who might struggle. Third it wouldn't be a bad idea to build trade value for the starters you have and with such a small sample size it is hard to do that. Fourth all the other teams are waiting to see what they have before feeling a strong need to trade for players which is why a lot of trades don't happen until June and July when teams better know where they stand in the playoff chase. Verdict to me is the Twins are not going to make any quick moves with the starters. Someone is going to have to be really bad for several turns or injured before any early changes will be made, Unless they decide to move starters in AAA to the pen I don't see anything happening until June or July.- 117 replies

Yeah that HIgh A to Double A jump does seem to be a tough for pitchers. Probably best to make sure they have their pitches as refined as possible. It is early but they all seem to have been dominant so far this season. Can't wait to see them move up and see if they are for real or not.

Well at least we have the fabulous five in High A to keep an eye on this year. Given how the guys in double A have been pitching they should move one or two of the fabulous five up there.

I was one of the posters to write Meyer off last year. He seemed such a mess I didn't see him ever getting things back together. I mean even from the bullpen he couldn't seem to miss bats or find the plate. He looked done to me even though the stats guys on here said things didn't look quite as bad as they appeared it was tough to watch him last year. These past two outings are encouraging and I never thought I would ever in my lifetime see a game where Alex had zero walks. He typically has to give up at least three free passes a game if not more. My mind can't fathom the Zero walks and no runs allowed from Meyer. Hope he keeps it up. Looks like Alex wants first crack at a Major league spot right now. If he has those demons behind him look out.

Yeah I know but I am a big Gordon believer. Just want to see him do well and like Mike I think there is a good chance he will continue to do well. If Vielma can't be moved then that would be a problem for Gordon to move as they both can't play the same position. I am guessing they will leave him in high A but I can dream bigger than that.

Or Vielma gets promoted to AAA by the All Star break. Who is really blocking him in AAA? I thought Polanco was playing 2nd base more now and Beresford was in a utility role. If Gordon is doing well keep him moving. Oh yeah that's right the Twins are typically one level at a time I always forget that.

Article: Draft Blog, Entry 2 (4/14/16)

I'd go pitcher in the first and take some bats in the second round as we have three picks in that round. So I'll go with the best pitcher available when we pick. -
Article: Player Predictions: RF Miguel Sano
Dman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure but did Bonds hit 30 his first couple of years? Sano has things to learn yet. He might make 30 we'll see. I certainly hope he does but it won't be as easy as some think it will. I think with anyone on base or a close game they will choose to pitch to someone else or try and entice him to swing at junk. He might start fast but once he proves himself I am betting there will be a big slow down in homers. -
Article: Player Predictions: RF Miguel Sano
Dman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I tend to agree with you Mike. I think once he starts abusing baseballs he isn't gonna see anything good to hit. Pitchers\teams are gonna game plan big time around him so I think he will have a hard time topping 30 homers this year. He has surprised me with how mature he is as a batter so maybe he goes over thirty but I doubt it. I would be impressed if he does at least this year. I guess we'll find out soon enough. -
Article: Contemplating A Platoon Advantage
Dman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In many ways I agree with your sentiment. After following these guys from the minors up to MLB and being so invested in their success it is hard to give up on them even if they move to another team. Do I follow them as closely? Probably not but I guess there is part of me that wants to believe I was right about that player. That he would be good or great if given more opportunity. At any rate I get your point and agree that I spend far more time worrying about the players on the Twins than Ex Twins players. So I think in many ways you are correct in your analysis. -
Article: Charting The Competition: Chicago White Sox
Dman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah a lot of us liked the moves the Sox made last year myself included. Your pitching is good but defense and timely hitting always seem to fall short. I for one think the Sox are due for a little extra luck but I think others are waiting to see if they will break out of their funk Despite your analysis I still question the hitting side of equation for your team but if they do find a groove with the bats they have the pitching to take the division. As I said earlier a lot of us here have liked the Sox moves in the off-season but just haven't seen the results so there is a little extra skepticism there. -
Article: One To Watch: LHP Mason Melotakis
Dman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am a big Melotakis fan. I still think he could be a good starter but I guess elite bullpen arm will have to do. I think he needs to start in the minors and depending on how he does they can call him up. I am glad the Twins added him as I would have hated to see them lose him. I really think he has the pitches to very good to great. Hopefully he will be up soon striking out MLB batters. -
Article: An Updated Look At Twins Payroll
Dman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personally I would count the 12M against this years cap whether it needs to be or not. It makes it easier to account for Parks low salary for the rest of the years. Even if that puts them at 118M they could easily stretch to 130M. I don't think money is the issue for them right now (at least for a reliever). I think deciding who plays and when is a larger concern. They better break the bank when some of these young guys turn into All Stars though or I plan to grumble loudly. -
Article: Top Prospects of 2017
Dman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Palacio would have my pick as well. He has a chance to be this years Orlando Arcia or he could just as easily fall to earth in A ball. Hard to say as several guys do well until they hit A or High A and they find the off speed stuff too much to handle. This guy seems like a fantastic hitter though so I am betting on him doing well. I would also like to think the Twins paid Javiar 4M for a reason. I have heard there are potential holes in his swing but that he hits the ball hard. I would like to think he will do well and be ranked top 10 before long. I am a big Jay believer as well. Scouting reports were glowing for him but transitioning to starter is a guessing game. he has the pitches just hope he has the endurance and no Tommy John in his future.- 27 replies

2016 Twins off-season top 40 prospects list: 21-25
Dman commented on Thrylos's blog entry in Thrylos' Blog - select Tenth Inning Stretch posts
Was never a big Eades fan but hope you are right about him. I hope he will turn out to be a valuable player. I still think you have Vielma too low. He was hitting really well at the end of the year and his defense is likely elite. He really has to be in at least the top 20. Love how you cover some of the more unseen guys. Thanks for the write ups! -
Article: Let's Stop Discounting Tommy Milone
Dman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Initially I was not a Tommy fan but after what he did when they dropped him to AAA and then up to MLB I became a big Tommy fan. I think he has earned his place in the rotation and yes it is nice to have a lefty arm. I think this Milone, May debate comes down to depth and how the Twins want to use said depth. If I was a GM I would want to try and build or continue to build the value of the guys I brought in via FA. So yes I would start the season with the vets give them a 4 to 5 start leash and re-evaluate from there. I can come up with all kinds of numbers to create positive and negative scenario's but I think in the end you have to give the vets first crack. What if Nolasco pitches great this coming year? What if Hughes has a huge bounce back year? What is Santana is unhitable out of the gate? We don't know how these guys are going to perform until they start. If they start off badly then yeah look at moving Hughes to the pen. Replace Nolasco etc. Move May back to the starting rotation. If the older vets get hurt or are ineffective then the plan B's can come in to play. In my mind we are going to need all the pitching we can get and if we don't then that means the old guys are doing just fine. I don't care where they put May as long as we are winning. If we aren't then the FO needs to be ready to be on the hot seat because I believe we do have younger better options. -
Although for the most part I like your starting pitching lineup I don't think that is what the Twins will do. They will let the Vets start. They stated they wanted to rebuild Nolasco's value and Hughes was our best pitcher in 2014. I think all the high paid vets will start the season as starters baring injury. So I see the starting rotation as Nolasco, Hughes, Santana, Gibson and Milone. A pen of Perkins, Jepson and May, likely Pressley, Fein and Tonkin, Maybe Darnell or maybe Duffey unless they want to keep him stretched out. If they really went with who is the best in the rotation that list would change but I am fairly certain they will start with vets and make changes from there.
-
I am kind of with NicksaViking on this one. I would like to see the Twins use the hard throwers we have in the pen. Lets see if we can build a pen like KC using the farm. Odds are the Twins will use May and possibly Duffy in the pen to start the year and they should be solid there. Then there is Chargois, Burdi, Meyer and Reed that could be ready soon. Gotta believe one or two will make it up this year. Due to this site and many posters on it I have come around on the spend for good players theory as there is little downside spending to make your team better. However, I wasn't in love with many of the relievers on the market and felt they got way over paid. Also it doesn't seem like a great idea to spend major dollars in the pen as it seems like the least bang for your buck. I didn't care for the Boston or Arizona trades for pitching where the cost was extremely high and maybe that is my weak spot as I love the prospects we have more than I probably should. I just don't see the point of losing that level of prospects for one guy. I also didn't like what the A's did essentially giving away player for lower ceiling prospects. To me the market at the winter meetings was variable in all the wrong ways for the Twins. I know several disagree with that as there is money that can and should be spent but I just don't feel like criticizing too much just yet.

I don’t love the idea of Sano in the outfield but I also don’t know how good or bad he will be out there yet. Do the Twins really need to keep Plouffe? I don’t think so. Even if Sano got hurt and needed to DH Nunez could play third and probably be close to as productive as Plouffe was. If the Twins want to maximize their return for Plouffe I would think trading him now or before the deadline would be the best value you could get for him. At the same time there isn’t a burning need to maximize Plouffe’s trade value as the 40 man is filling up with young players and we are gonna have a hard time keeping everyone we currently have as it is. Also the rumored Trade with the Angels doesn’t appear to bring back anything outstanding either. Given those scenarios maybe Plouffe just has more value staying with the Twins. The other thing brought up on this board is that an injury to Mauer, Park, Plouffe or Sano and there is no real log jam there. Odds are someone will get injured and be out for a while. So to keep or not keep I could go either way. Maybe depth is the better way to go this year I don’t know. At the same time I don’t think it matters much what they do right now. If things are going well or poorly for the team in June they can trade him then. If he ends up being a key cog in their success then they made the right choice hanging onto him. If someone offers the Twins a deal too good to pass up then go for it. I doubt the offers will be good to great for an average third baseman but who knows.

I agree with your assessment of Wimmers. Thing is I believe Gilmartin was pretty much the same way the year before and yet the Mets were able to look past that and see the potential. I don't think Wimmers has the stuff to start but I think he can be a very good bullpen arm with just a little bit more consistency. A risk to be sure but one I think some team will take.
