  1. It looks to me like the day of the pure DH is going away due to the premium being placed on pitching. Which means any DH needs to be at least competent defensively. So, I don't believe valuable roster spots should be wasted on a bench player who is aging, limited defensively and is going to be rather expensive compared to internal options.
  2. I'm going with Darvish or nothing. Seems to me that adding two pitchers not named Darvish creates a problem the Twins don't need, in that the Twins have some young, and returning, pitchers the Twins need to find out about.
  3. Look, MLB needs to find a way to thread the needle between the length of a game and advertising revenue. More rules are not always the answer because enforcing rules can have an impact pace of play and the length of a game. If anything, I find "pace of play" to be somewhat of a deflection from where the problem actually lies.
  4. You think Hughes is going to be a viable option? I don't see it, but, then again, I was counting Mauer out last year. Of course, we all know how that turned out.
  5. I'm right there with you when it comes to game threads. That's what I truly enjoy.
  6. Moderators? TD needs moderators? Wow, I hardly noticed. *Which, I believe, is entirely the point. Well done, guys and gals!
  7. I caught a blurb on MLB.com and it sounds like Cashman isn't happy the Yankees were not included in Ohtani's list. Maybe someone should point out to Cashman that if the Yankees wouldn't have built a park that heavily favors hitters they might have had a better chance to land Ohtani. Stress on "maybe."
  8. Hmm, I wonder if the fact Ichiro spent all that time in Seattle had anything to do with Ohtani presumably signing with Seattle?
  9. I wrote off Joe Mauer last year and he wound up having a very pre-concussion Joe Mauer kind of year. So, do I write off Phil Hughes so the baseball gods can again mock me and prove me wrong? Hmmmm......
  10. I'll be interested to see if Ohtani goes to a pitcher friendly park. Also, I have to wonder if the reason Ohtani wanted a pitch from all teams was due to the fact he wants to be a two-way player and, therefore, wants to know exactly how a team plans on using him when he isn't pitching. Side note: I don't think Molitor is the kind of guy who can be successful with a two-way player.
  11. Just tossing this out there: how much would that short right field in Yankee Stadium affect the decision of a pitcher to sign? I took a quick look and all I can find is glowing reports about Ohtani with nothing that indicates what kind of pitcher he is. I almost have to believe that if Ohtani is a strike out pitcher, then he probably induces a fair amount of fly balls. At Target Field that might play well. At Yankee Stadium, not sure that would be a good thing. Just my .02. And we know how far .02 will go.
  12. Okay, now this makes for an interesting off-season. Probably more interesting than Jack Morris, fur coat and all, blowing into town trying to get the Twins to sign him back in the day.
  13. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. And a special thank you to the mods for keeping things in check and organizing the Game threads.
  14. Really? Did not know that. But, you knew that, didn't you?
  15. And, he spent his career in the dome, which I do not believe was considered "infielder friendly."
  16. I don't know that NY is going to spend the money to bring in Darvish. During the playoffs last year, one of the broadcasters mentioned that NY was looking to get under the salary cap so they're not paying the luxury tax any more. Specifically, the conversation was about resigning CC Sabathia and whether or not Sabathia would take a pay cut to stay with NY and get NY under the cap. (going from memory here, so, the possibility exists that I imagined the whole thing)
  17. Okay, thank you for filling me in. Like most of us, I think, I'm really interested to see what the new FO does this off-season, whether it's trading for a younger arm or making a FA splash.
  18. Darvish is 31. And hasn't he had some injury issues the last couple of years? I'm not wild about 30 something year old starting pitchers. The Twins already have one of those on the staff. But, I also admit I'm not wild about spending big bucks on FA pitching, especially when a pitcher is on the other side of 30. Granted, Santana has done darn well but, I think he's more the exception than the rule. Of course, this leads into the very real problem the Twins have when it comes to lack of pitching in the farm system. And that leads me to believe the Twins are going to have to trade for a younger arm out of another farm system. Bottom line, I'm expecting the FO to do something other than the obvious.
  19. Wouldn't an internal candidate like Mitch Garver be acceptable? It's obvious the days of the "DH only" are pretty much over due to teams wanting to carry more pitchers. I don't get looking at outside candidates when there may be candidates that will give the team the bat and the defensive flexibility needed. I mention this, because, frankly, every dollar not spent on a FA position player is another dollar for a FA pitcher.
  20. I always thought Gold Glove was glove first, bat second. If the award was truly weighted that way, then Mauer should have won it easily. As for Brian Dozier, I'm shocked Brian is even in the discussion for a Gold Glove. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a steady defender with an excellent bat. But I just don't see how the bat overcomes a mediocre glove.
