  1. Just leave Pagan at OHare, please. The social worker will take care of him. He is inhabited by the ghost of Rob Davis.
  2. In the game last night Steve Stone said that Buxton has hit 49 homers since he last hit into a double play. I believe he then said that was the longest streak in the history of baseball going back to the 19th century. Also, let’s get Ryan out of there.
  3. Agreed. In 15 years people will be asking how on earth it took so long for pitchers like Blyleven to get into the Hall. I'm not a fan of putting Jack Morris in the Hall, but if wins matter at all 254 looks like a really impressive total in this era. And if wins don't matter, then put Santana in. Or else just don't have any new pitchers.
  4. So you want people to find examples where a pitcher has through 58 pitches through 5 innings and was taken out? How about if instead of expecting other people to prove your point, you slog through a whole bunch of game logs and prove it yourself? [edit- ninja'd by chpettit19 but at least I was succinct ]
  5. Two other factors that matter on a case-by-case basis: - what options does the team have; do we need to keep running someone out there, even if he's failing, because we have no real alternative at the moment? You are more likely to give up on someone if you have a potentially better (or at least different) option. - the same is true for 40-man roster management. If we let Player X be unprotected, that's partly a function of who we want to protect instead. We may not have given up on Wells or Baddoo, but we chose to put other people higher on the priority list. Maybe that's not giving up on them, but it certainly isn't fully believing in them. Things like draft position are sunk costs that might unfortunately influence team decisions. How long would Tyler Jay have lasted in the minors if he hadn't been a first round pick? You can certainly argue that the pick measured potential, and players with more potential deserve a longer leash, but I think there's a mental factor that makes teams hang on longer than they should in some cases.
  6. OK. Another guy we allowed a team to take away from us. Either way, he of course pitched like an all-star today. Dang it.
  7. Welcome to the next installment of "Here's a Twin we dumped who is doing decently well but probably nothing to cry over losing except he's about to have the game of his life against us". Hopefully we can lie in the weeds again, let them think they are going to win, and then pound their bullpen into submission. Go Twins!
  8. I was at the Kernels game on Friday when Nigro pitched. We were in the bleachers and the PA and electronic scoreboard were way too busy with promotions and youtube clips to announce new pitchers. I saw a new pitcher throw this blooper of an off-speed pitch, almost an eephus, and thought "who's the position player pitching now?". Before I could look up the number he blazed in a fastball. I was immediately confused as to whether it was a position player or a reliever. Pretty impressive stuff, with one of the widest ranges in velocity that I've ever seen. The Kernels came back in the top of the ninth- the game ended with the tying run at the plate. I was thinking- wow, if they go ahead here and win, a catcher is going to get his first professional victory as a pitcher. How many times has that ever happened?? That's just idle pondering, not a serious question BTW.
  9. Thanks, I thought the Pohlads had bought a time machine. I appreciate the correction.
  10. I was at the Kernels game. The T-Rs took out their starter in the fifth inning. His team had scored 8 runs in the first, he had given up ZERO HITS, and he didn't get the W. The walks and HBP were astonishing, It was like watching a little league game. I believe the Kernels had 6 runs and 2 hits at one point. And despite having the catcher pitch (incredible changeups, BTW), they still managed to have the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning. The all-you-can-eat tropical food buffet for Margaritaville Night was good- not great, but good. Very depressed that the beer you could get with the two drink coupons was either Miller Light or Coors Lite, which does not qualify as beer anywhere but wedding receptions. Fun game, great atmosphere, nice fireworks. Catch a game if you are in Appleton, WI looking for something to do. Big Dog reporting.
  11. How many playoff games did we win with Nelson's leadership? Even the bathrobes didn't work.
  12. I know Pagan doesn’t have 10 blown saves, but it sure feels like it.
  13. The good news is that Pagan won’t be available for the second game.
  14. To paraphrase Gary Gaetti, it’s hard to throw a strike with both hands around your throat.
  15. Only two walks so far! Classic Pagan. They fell into our trap!
  16. They should have Emilio Pagan Heart Pills night as a promotion.
  17. I wish Buxton would quit swinging at strike three in the dirt.
