  1. Hey, maybe he took a calculated risk to just take it in the chin, rather than throw hands and break a finger or something.
  2. Not only will I keep an eye on their baseball development, but I will also make sure to get a hold of Ryan Mason when I get my Allman Brothers Tribute Band off the ground.
  3. A lot of people had Arraez pegged for a contender for the batting title, so his sub .300 average, to me, counts as off. He's making hard contact at a better rate than ever before, so when he adapts to the defensive adjustments in place against him, I think his avg. will bounce back in a big way.
  4. I think the answer, with regards to Astudillo is right there in your description of Barnes as a pitcher. Astudillo doesn't strike out, so if the imperative is to make contact, it's hard to go wrong with Willians. A high k pitcher is a perfect opportunity to use him if the goal is simply to put a ball in play, given his unique approach
  5. I was saying at the game yesterday that Sano just looks petulant at the plate. I wonder how much the cold gets to him, but also, I wonder if he is the type of guy that gets so in his own head that it's deleterious to the rest of his game. There are a few guys that just seem to shut down in cold weather. Sano, Eddie Rosario especially, but Rosario seems like he has the capacity to self correct. and didn't have the offseason Sano did. don't worry, June's coming in a couple months, and we'll probably even be in the 60s by then
  6. I think in general I'm going to worry about a pitcher in his mid 30s, and moreso if they have a recent injury
  7. I, for one, don't believe Jose Altuve has any choice but to hit the bottom of the ball. He would have to jump to get on top of one to hit it on the ground anywhere.
  8. I suspect that unless the Twins get a rock bottom price, they are loathe to give up a pick for a year or two of a pitcher that was going to be their 2nd or 3rd choice, at the very best. I'm just assuming they intend to be done (but you never know, injuries, etc.)
  9. The biggest revelation is that the Twins had a prospect named Mat Batts, and I had no idea
  10. I've never been anywhere near optimistic about the Twins signing Darvish, so with that in mind, I'm quite pleased that the Twins aren't just sitting on their hands, while they wait for him to decide. Every pitcher helps
  11. As a broad, general statement, I think it's folly to invest heavily in free agents, but more palatable to acquire young players, but in this specific instance, there has been so much smoke, so many signals even from the front office, it's almost a self respect thing at this point that I want the Twins to get Darvish. I want to know that Minnesota is a desirable location for a top free agent for my own satisfaction as much as anything
  12. Ultimately, it's not up to me whether or not he is in the Hall of Fame, but in the case of Joe Mauer, I think Ted boiled it down pretty good. If he is viewed as a catcher first and foremost, it's tough to keep him out. Of course, I think we have started to learn lately that a good story will get you into the hall of fame, i.e. the argument that the Hall of Fame is a museum that tells the story of baseball. Yes, you have the statistical acumen of your Nolan Ryans and Hank Aarons, but also, Jack Morris and Kirby Puckett are in the hall of fame in large part because of their contribution to a narrative. In that regard, I think Mauer, the face of a franchise for over a decade, also earns some points. Santana? Who knows. There are a lot more good pitchers than good catchers, and it's tough to find the story that would get him in.
  13. I have always had a thing for corner outfielders and infielders, especially those that are on the larger side, and it always burns me. I'm intrigued by Wiel, but I'm keeping my distance, for my heart's sake
  14. Not if you let it, I don't think. There is still a supply and demand principle at play for the top talent, even for prospect depth. If a team has two options, they aren't going to take the lesser just because the Twins don't need the players they are offering nearly as much.
  15. I'd rather the Twins consider expanding their payroll, but I think the best way to do so is by extending the players they want to go the long haul with now. Pitching free agency is such a dangerous minefield, I am always skeptical of those big contracts to free agent pitchers. It's such a gamble that can go so wrong. You need good depth to a rotation, and will investing a lot of money into one guy hurt the chances of building out a full pitching staff? I don't know. The nice thing about extending players is you know which prospects will be blocked, and can decide which positions are positions of strength. Trade from a position of strength, acquire younger cheaper starters and win that way.
  16. I think a good lesson for the Twins, and I'm sure it's well taken already, is that the biggest free agent SP the Astros added as they turned things around was Scott Feldman. They developed talent from within (McCullers and Keichel) and have had really good production from some under the radar arms (McHugh and Morton). Sure, they grabbed Verlander at the deadline this year, but to get to a point where that matters, you need a lot more depth. I'm already conditioned to believe that, if they sign any of the top FA pitchers, it will bite Minnesota in the butt before it pays off.
  17. This seems like the organizational tenet for it's major league coaching hires. I seem to recall Rowson sying something very simlar upon his hire, but you know, for batters.
  18. I hate the idea of sinking a lot of money into a free agent, because that means that pitcher is likely on the wrong side of 30, and there aren't many pitchers that are still effective at 33/34 and older. I can guarantee you that someone like Yu Darvish or Arrieta will want a contract that extends longer than the 2 or 3 years beyond what is left of their prime, at which point, you have a lot of money tied up in a ticking time bomb. People can complain about Mauer's contract, but signing someone to an extension in their late 20s, especially a position player, is a reasonable move, but sinking a lot of money and years into pitching free agents effectively kneecaps your payroll in just a few years, and you know it ahead of time. Your time to win with Sano and Buxton is a lot shorter than what is left under their team control. Trade prospects for guys with many arb years let, or reallocate your prospect depth to patch the holes in the system that you need. Any signing over 1-2 years is going to irritate me.
  19. I wonder what the perspective on the Twins not trading Dozier would have been had the rest of the team not turned it around so dramatically this year? I think one of the factors in people desiring to see a Dozier trade was the perception that the Twins were more than 1 or 2 years off. Had I known that the Twins would even be above .500 this year, I would have said "hang on to Dozier" but I'll admit, when I thought the Twins were good for 70 or fewer wins at the beginning of the year, not getting prospect depth for Dozier was lamentable. More than anything, the Twins are lucky there wasn't a market for Dozier.
  20. I'm looking for one person who totally pegged Eddie Rosario's season, and then having them invest in the stock market for me.
  21. Well holy crap that was a hell of an inning. Also, has it been 15 years since the Twins traded Hicks? He looks about 15 years older
  22. The trade that brought in Escobar is one of the better trades for the Twins that doesn't get nearly as much publicity. The Twins have never made a bad trade involving Francisco Liriano
  23. One way or another, it will be interesting to see what the FO does now that they have a full season of information to reflect on. Do they believe that this season is repeatable? If so, prospects may be moved in order to get the big show pieces they need at important positions. Do they not? Then maybe Erv or Dozier are on the block again as they seek to ensure a longer run at the top of the mountain. Or you know, close to the top. I haven't been very good at guessing with this team in the last year, so it will mostly be curious observation. Oh, and also, there is at least one playoff game in the interim. I will be focused intently upon that as well
  24. It would be a shame if he wasn't able to go. I'm sure the Twins are watching him, and will make sure he can hit in the cage at least. He's not coming back unless both he and the Twins are sure he'll play. I'm not going to second guess any decision that is made, honestly. Heck, the fact that the Twins are where they are tells me I should probably just keep my dang opinions to myself.
