Listened to the first half of the Wind Surge game. Kiersey with a 3B and HR before the game was out of hand (Baseball America named him the fastest runner (or was it player) in the Texas League). Martin stole second when the catcher got lazy on a throw back to the pitcher. Need some of those base running smarts on the Twins. Lee fouled off a couple 0-2 pitches and lined an RBI single to right (of course, the 2B in his next AB was a pop up in the infield). Headrick was very good. Win one more Wind Surge!

Gray, Mahle, Ryan, Maeda, Winder and Ober to start the year in a 6 man rotation is what I think the Twins will plan. Injuries will change that. Paddock will be ready at some point and Varland and SWR should be ready sometime next year.

The 3 Most Upsetting Developments on the Farm This Year
FlyingFinn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
There was someone in the medical profession that posted on TD in another thread - the last thing they want to do is put someone under the knife. So that's why they tried everything else first.- 36 replies

I really like how Keirsey's bat has improved and continue to wonder if he is great defensively. Lee continues to pound the ball, now in AA.

Look at all those moves. Makes sense - get done with the playoffs at the lower levels and send some of your top guys to AA and AAA for more games. Lee will get more playoff experience with the Wind Surge. Good idea!

Seth said in an earlier post that it is rare for AAA players to go to the AFL. The Twins must think that Headrick and Enlow have pitched enough innings this year as well.

My opinion is no, as we are more likely to protect a borderline pitcher like Headrick.

Martin and Keirsey with 75 SB's combined. Keirsey certainly has speed and I would think, with that, he is an excellent defender in CF. What about the other tools? I never hear about him possibly making it to MLB. I think his bat has held him back but he is hitting better the last half of this year. Some of our 2022 draft class pitchers are throwing a few innings. Kyle Jones with the win in relief. Cavaco leaves 3 guys on base the first three times up and then cleans the bases the fourth time. Ross continues to collect hits. At Cedar Rapids, Brooks Lee already looks like the star of the team. Another couple doubles last night. Good night on the farm!

We can agree to disagree. It's the minor league pitcher of the year, not the upper minors pitcher of the year or most innings pitched award. Varland won it last year pitching 55 innings at Cedar Rapids (with the rest at Fort Myers) while Festa pitched 85 there this year. Varland was almost a year older at this level than Festa if we want to throw in other factors. Most of Varland's stats this year are only one level above Festa's. Varland's minor league ERA this year was 3.63. Festa's ERA this year was 2.30. Not close! Varland gave up 15 HR's, Festa 6. SO per 9 innings are close. BB's per 9 are the same. Hits per 9 favors Festa. As for innings pitched, the difference is less than 17 innings (126.1 to 109.2). Varland was very good but Festa was great this year IMO. Next debate - Twins minor league hitter of the year, neither of whom is with the organization - Spencer Steer vs. ECS, or is it Wallner now....

To get more AB's. Miranda often batted leadoff in the minors.

He wasn't going to stay on the 40 man through the winter as we added others in the minors to it and signed free agents and the Twins thought now was the best time for him to clear through waivers.

Minnesota’s Other Breakout Pitching Prospect
FlyingFinn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
You apparently didn't hear about Festa's game last night. Hit 101 mph. 6.2 innings when most others go 5 or less. No runs and no walks in a playoff game. He was dominant. Not true. Festa was drafted in the 13th round. Can hit 100mph with no walks in a game. Apparently I am on the Festa bandwagon more than anyone on TD. As for Headrick, he will be on the 40 man. Twins traded away two lh starters in Povich and Hajjar. Can't afford to let another get away. -
Festa clinches minor league pitcher of the year IMO. Hits 101 MPH, goes 6.2 innings (not a typo!), 2 hits, NO walks, and no runs. Wow! Ben Ross continues to do very well. SSS but this has been a great start for him.

Festa just capped his minor league pitcher of the year award with 6.2 innings of 2 hit, no BB, 10 SO performance in the playoffs. Wow! (who says our minor league pitchers only go 5 innings max)

If the Twins bring back Mahle too soon, they get charged with malpractice by some of the TD crowd. If they bring them back "too slow" others complain. Let the medical people do their job and bring them back when healthy. After today, I wouldn't rush anyone back, except maybe rushing Wallner and Varland up here to get ready for next year.
-
Interesting note - if everyone had stayed healthy, Gordon would have been cut (replaced by Lewis) before he got a chance to play almost every day and show what he can do. Also, Miranda - there probably wouldn't have been room for him, he would stayed with the Saints and he may have been dealt at the trade deadline for pitching, again before we knew he could or couldn't handle MLB pitching. Right now, those are 2 of our best 4 hitters.

Minor League Report (9/10): Wichita Wins on a Walk-Off
FlyingFinn replied to Matt Braun's topic in Archived Game Threads
Wallner continues his hot streak. If the Twins drop out of the race, bring him up and get his cold start out of the way before next year. Sabato - the injury is bad enough but he was probably going to the Arizona Fall League to work on things. Doubly bad for him. Soularie - anyone know why he is suspended?- 8 replies

Minor League Recap (9/9): Balazovic Back On Track
FlyingFinn replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
True. I think the Twins have projected innings totals for each pitcher for the year and those are now limiting the innings they pitch in September even though they are stretched out to go longer. Age is certainly a factor. A good prospect would never have been allowed to go 9 innings. Is it the right thing to do is the real question? Have the Twins and other teams done this for years or is this a change? Does this prevent injuries or help the pitchers in the future? It's my impression that there weren't many major injuries this year to our guys in the lower minors. The Canterino and Balazovic injuries the past couple years certainly aren't good but many say Canterino's injury was due to the way he was overused at Rice University. I'm thinking the Twins and other organizations try to answer these questions better each year. I imagine nobody has #'s on whether everyone does about the same thing with their minor league pitchers as the Twins do. Good discussion.- 18 replies

Minor League Recap (9/9): Balazovic Back On Track
FlyingFinn replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
A five inning rule just isn't true. Festa 6.2 innings on Sept 7th for Cedar Rapids. Gossett 9 innings on Aug 19 for Wichita. Carr 6.2 innings on Aug 16 for Fort Myers. Rodriguez 6 innings on Aug 5 for St. Paul. So there isn't any five inning rule at the top four levels of the Twins minors.- 18 replies

Minor League Recap (9/9): Balazovic Back On Track
FlyingFinn replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Lots of good pitching this week, tonight it was - Balazovic, Headrick, Olsen, Raya as starters and plenty of good relief pitching as well, but not McMahon, who has struggled greatly since his promotion. Wallner with a couple hits including his third triple for the Saints. Wow, for someone who is supposed to be slow, he sure gets a lot of triples and steals his share of bases.- 18 replies

Batters must have both feet in the batters box by the time there is 8 seconds left on the clock. They can adjust their batting gloves but they will have to do it very fast. Penalty is a strike against them. Sounds good to me.
