Article: Twins Being Overwhelmed By Underperformance
Kwak replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins believed their own smoke and sunshine--and when the results were undeniably bad--they were forced to publicly acknowledge the fact. Then, they deflected the blame "downhill" (you know ...). This time no timetable was even mentioned or even suggested. -
This "total system failure" was cast in 2012 when Pohlad decided to restore Ryan. That decision showed his lack of passion for MLB and that Twins were: a dividend check, a footprint in the community (oh so useful for preferential treatment from the community rulers), and membership in an exclusive club. Ryan represents a need for complete control of a "family business" and the security that delivers. Twins fans simply misunderstood that there is more than one definition of " a winning baseball team".

"Total system failure"? Is that an admission of "I believed the smoke machine and now we have to eat crow"? If so, why continue with the same management that failed? 2016 is the fifth year of "the rebuild" or whatever buzzword was used to explain the need to dump Bill Smith. If the players are to be blamed (and yes they should be!) who is responsible for their failure? At some point failure can no longer be placed on the departed and must be assigned to those who are in charge now. The current system selected, developed, promoted, and trusted "the players" who are now admonished. If the "system failed" then rotating personnel won't fix anything. Too many are quick to place the blame on the rotation. Examine the first two weeks. 0-9, but with few exceptions the final scores were close and the losses were caused by a lack of offense. Way too many strikeouts and very few hits with baserunners. The 4-game "win streak" --some timely hitting, solid pitching and few gaffes in the field. But a tough loss or two--and chaos followed. Pohlad calls it "total system failure"--but all we see are some minor personnel removed. If Ryan installs Gardenhire as part of "keeping the ole gang around" then we'll see why this debacle occurred.

Article: Minnesota's Misuse of Meyer?
Kwak replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The problem with Meyer is two-fold: 1) an everyday, dependable CF was traded for a hoped-for starting pitcher. Span represents considerable value (even more so now given the struggles the Twins have endured in CF since he left!) and a return of only a one inning relief pitcher indicates failure. Yet, Meyer has not developed into a ML starting pitcher. To say "Nuts" to Ryan's ego is naïve. He was brought back to fix the mess based on his perceived expertise in locating "diamonds in-the-ruff" for pitchers. Meyer is Ryan's "diamond"! 2) The expectations for this season were high based on last season--especially for many of most "vocal" TD posters. It was not reasonable to begin the season with the premise of using 2016 as a "rehearsal season" to build for future success. Therefore, Meyer (and others) were slated t begin in the minors while other young players were to bein with the Twins. Quite frankly I don't view Meyer favorably--I am convinced he is well behind too many others for a spot in the rotation. But I can accept that Ryan might not want to cast Meyer off yet--since he made the trade for Meyer! -
Article: What's Next For Byron Buxton?
Kwak replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This forum would have exploded if Buxton was traded--even if for Trout! -
Absolutely! Gibson is no more injured than I am! He is simply struggling and Ryan is gaming the system of "player movement" to try to save this miserable start. It is Occam's razor--if these new players outperform the "injured" veterans it reflects badly on the decision to begin with the original rotation.

There had better be some trade(s) brewing. The OF either can't hit, can't field, or neither hit or field. There are oodles of pitchers available--and the Twins need a catcher--yesterday!

Duffey "needed" a third pitch? He didn't before--and this 'advice" can from perhaps the worst pitcher-development franchise in baseball (if 15 years of statistics are useful). Instead of wasting himself on what doesn't work--Duffey should focus on what does work.- 92 replies

Article: May’s Mentality Much Needed In Pen
Kwak replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How many quality pitches does May have? I don't recall May using a split-fingered FB or a curve. Yet there are an abundance of posters screaming that May belongs in the rotation! based on what evidence--a one-pitch pitcher? His Pelfrey-ish statistics from 2015? His BP stats from 2014? Give May credit for intelligence--he would not eliminate quality pitches from his repertoire. -
Article: May’s Mentality Much Needed In Pen
Kwak replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Eliminating his slider to enhance his strikeouts? The slider is a strikeout pitch. It is often the #1 pitch for a relief pitcher. At the very least it serves as a change-of-pace pitch to complement a fastball. Judging from May's one inning against Tampa we realize that strikeouts aren't everything! May recorded three K's, but surrendered two runs. The winner is decided by which team records the most runs not the most strikeouts. -

Article: TD Top Prospects: #8 Alex Meyer
Kwak replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Making the reasonable assumption that some of the bullpen aren't "lights-out, shutdown", Meyer should be promoted to the Twins to see if he can provide value. If Meyer succeeds--great! If, he fails--say "Next", and place next year's 27 year-old on the "suspect" list. If there is room on the 40-man roster--keep him him, else outright him to Rochester. There are many "arms" in the Twins system. -

Develop? His job is to pitch one inning using his fastball--the same task he performed in college and so far 1-1/2 years in the minors. This isn't brain surgery--do it this year or get filed with Alex Meyer. -

Article: Is The Twins System Broken?
Kwak replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Is the system broken"--implies that there was some finely-tuned machine. The Twins were succeeding in a weak division--Cleveland was torn apart because they couldn't afford their top players anymore; KC was a rudderless sailing ship with two broken masts; Detroit was totally abysmal for the first half of the decade--until the owner tore-down the structure and rebuilt with an enormous amount of money; and Chicago which had some good people and good players wasn't a finely-tuned machine either--though they did manage to win a WS once. In short, the competition bar was lower for the Twins than most other teams but [some] fans look nostalgic on the success and others point-out that post-season results were almost a complete disaster. However, the owners did get that tax-subsidized stadium and can stand on an aircraft carrier and declare "mission accomplished". Success is in the eyes of the beholder.- 119 replies

Article: Charting The Competition: Cleveland Indians
Kwak replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Comparisons to Pujols make no sense--he was not available. Cleveland had need for a proven power hitter and Davis was one of the very few available. Comparisons are valid against any of those other available power hitters.
