  1. Regardless of who who you think is #1 now, they both would have been #1 5 years ago; nice problem to have, Berrios, Meyer, plus Stewart, true potential front line guys. When has that ever happened for this team? We ain't talking Mark Redmond, Jason Bell, and Dan Serafini here. Or Baker, Slowey, Blackburn. Or Mills, Johnson, whoever. Add in Gonsalves, Thorpe, maybe Cederoth. This has been a layer of starting pitching the Twins prospect pool has never had in my time, except if you consider Santana -Liriano, but they both seemed to make their case at the major league level. The pen looks to be in good shape for the future as well.
  2. I hope these recent somewhat head-scratching drafts pay off in creating a true team strength. The way Gardy manages, a lights out bullpen is essential. Looks like the Twins are on the cusp of having one, and some surplus to boot. Of course, Gardy might not be around long enough to see this truly flower.
  3. Would have liked to see Guerra. Romero would have been a feel good after his loyalty to the organization - I expect he will move on next season. I don't know the ins/outs of the 40 man and what not, but I would have liked to see more emphasis on the future and less on rewarding good performance at AAA.
  4. Thanks much for this - player development is key, but winning along the way is a close second for me. Instilling a winning spirit in the lads can't but help.
  5. A competent 25 year old SS is nothing to sneeze at. Escobar has been my #1 surprise this season. Santana has been pleasant surprise #1. He seems pretty mature for his age. His athleticism is a nice match for short. Given that we have a top SS prospect in Gordon, and all the rest (Polanco, Michael), I agree with Nick, suddenly shortstops indeed. So so glad we got Burdi instead of Stephen Drew and his .170 BA. BTW, just checked, Burdi's numbers so far: 16 IP 11H 31K.
  6. "A couple fairly intriguing minor-league pitchers came back in the Correia and Willingham swaps" I must've missed it - who did they get for Correia?
  7. This sums up my thinking as well. Who needs a stinking trade deadline when you can get real live prospecrts like this for guys that are on their final legs here.
  8. I know there have been some eyebrows raised at the Twins habit of drafting college relievers of late. My eyebrows are raised in that none of them are actually on the team yet. Good powerful bullpen lies in our future.
  9. The Twins really, REALLY need to give Mays and Meyer their taste of MLB this season. The learning opportunity is just too huge to be wasted.
  10. Mike, is it possible that everything is baseball isn't quantifiable? What about a pitcher's confidence in a particular pitch? What is our stat for that? Or a catcher's ability to settle down a pitcher that is rattled? I appreciate your point of view, but I believe it ignores a lot of the elements that are present in human endeavors.
  11. I am surprised at the condescension in this thread; Terry Ryan probably isn't an idiot about baseball, and the offers he got probably weren't good. I'm just guessing though. Having some depth at catcher is a good thing, especially at an affordable price, and now the Twins have that with Pinto and Suzuki, while other guys develop in the minors. Constant rebuild is fun, but why not keep good players once in a while too?
  12. Looking back at Correia's career, he was a MF NL All-Star in 2011. All Star! He is the Twin's Heatley, a true All -Star!
  13. I could see Suzuki 60/40 with Pinto next year, 40/60 the next, if he declines and Pinto improves. Or 70/30. It seems like this contract gives the Twins a nice out if he declines.
  14. If framing is so important, is is possible catchers could improve at it? Maybe watch tapes of the Molina brothers?
  15. Exactly - it is quite possible that NOBODY wanted them. Maybe, possibly, perhaps other teams GMs are as smart as the fans at Twins Daily who were desperate to rid themselves of this deadwood.
