  1. Levine practically apologized for being unable to complete a trade in the Strib last week. The Twins “have placed a lot of [waiver] claims on players we think can help our team,” Levine said, but have not been able to negotiate a trade. “It’s not for lack of effort on our part,” he added. “We’ve already pivoted once in this process, and I think we demonstrated a willingness to respond to the way the team is performing. … We have the support of ownership to do it, and we’re going to continue to be creative and aggressive the rest of the season to help our team.” Sounds like they want to add a player(s). I assume bullpen, but we can't say for sure I guess. In any case, its another reason to over-prepare before the season starts, because you can't necessarily swing a trade later, especially in August.
  2. Hit probability is a function of exit velo and launch angle correct? Seems to be missing a third variable: horizontal angle. Balls hit right at you are harder to gauge depth wise than ones hit to either side. That was a damn tough catch. edit: Kepler's too. Same issue. What was Statcast's hit probability on that one?
  3. From the stretch he'd have to step off the rubber before firing home. I'm 99% sure, maybe an ump (Spinowner) could pipe up to confirm.
  4. This is the double edged sword that is Eddie Rosario's aggressiveness. Love it. Even if he doesn't draw a balk, maybe he gets the pitcher to abandon his offspeed stuff for fear of the PB. That said, all the pitcher had to do was wait for Eddie to run up the line then step off and run directly at him. Probably Eddie wins a foot race back to third but maybe his brain freezes long enough to tag him.
  5. This is a common refrain around here but I'm not sure. Polanco is batting .581. Goodrum and Blankenhorn are organizational filler. You could plan for Gordon in 2019, but who takes over SS? And, if the trade price is low for above average second baseman, so would the FA price, methinks. Keeping Dozier for a few years after he hits FA could easily be the best option organizationally and not that expensive.
  6. You do wonder if Dozier beats out that high throw if the Twins hadn't traded Garcia http://www.twincities.com/2017/08/03/john-shipley-twins-are-ticked-they-should-be-says-derek-falvey/ Although you wonder if he would run that lackadaisically under a different manager too. Gardy in particular would have throw a fit.
  7. Jeez who knew 88 mph fastballs could be so hard to hit. When's this Griffin guy hit free agency?
  8. They get injuries every year. That is the normal course of business for a baseball team. Last year it was Nolasco. Before that Santana was a PED suspension without pay. Morneau, Mauer, etc. Injuries to Hughes and Perkins in 2017 don't seem so far out of line with normal baseball ops that they should be accounted for in a special way. The 2018 payroll will be determined by prior year revenues, as it always is.
  9. Santana has had ~100 more PAs than Grossman too. I agree he'd be an upgrade over Grossman but if 2017 is any kind of indicator then it still looks pretty marginal to me for the likely $$ involved.
  10. JP is on record saying 50-55% of prior year revenues will be used on payroll, right? The TV deal hasn't changed (I don't think). Attendance has gone up a tick over 2016. Will they gain/lose in revenue sharing?
  11. Not sure this insurance sidebar is relevant. Is ~20% of payroll on injured players out of the norm? Every team has injuries to deal with.
  12. Santana makes some sense. Would he be much of an upgrade over Grossman tho? Smith being a lefty corner OF would make Rosario or Kepler redundant. What do you do with them?
  13. Fair. Both players certainly have warts. How would you upgrade the hitting?
  14. I do agree the Twins should look to upgrade at first base but Sano probably is that guy after 2018. Personally I'd love to see them make a run at Moustakas this winter. -He's young and still seems to be getting better. -He'd be an upgrade defensively. -After Sano, 3B is a black hole For 2018 they could roll with Sano at DH half the time and subbing at 1B or 3B the other half to juggle Mauer/Sano/Moustakas. And I would test the trade market for Buxton. CF is a black hole offensively. If they could get pitching in trade for Buxton then backfill CF with Cain or another vet I think that might be a good route.
  15. Ignore the pitching, yes. That's exactly what I said. This is a thread about hitting. Don't troll.
  16. Mauer's fine. He'll make contact with an off speed pitch on occasion and isn't the automatic rally killer like half the lineup right now. Obviously would like Vargas or Park to take the job from him but they simply haven't.
  17. From where I'm sitting, the league has figured out Kepler. He's a very good fastball hitter but can't hit a breaking ball to save his life, just like Buxton (although he can't hit fastballs either). Ditto Sano. If these are going to be "core" players for the next 5 years, they need to figure that out. Maybe they need to replace Rowson. Its pretty clear through 69 PAs that Granite's a Revere type 4th outfielder. No XBH power at all, Vargas turned 27 yesterday. The guy has the most awkward over-his-front-foot downward tomahawk swing I think I've ever seen from a MLB player. Cut him. Park is a bust. Castro's shouldn't be hitting any higher than 9. Grossman doesn't have enough power or defense to start regularly. Man without a position, but maybe enough to stick around as a 5th OFer. Polanco & Adrianza- someone please tell the Twins that all switch hitting middle infielder with a last name that ends in a vowel aren't automatically MLB calibre players. No punch at all. Escobar- seems to have proven himself average across the board. Good enough for now. Gimenez- no
