  1. I don't remember you saying anything about 12 and 13 man pitching staffs. But look. I think Joe fits next year's team. Most every team has 3 players who play corner infield and DH. Those are three positions. Joe doesn't play 3b, but so what? It is not a bad thing to have Joe around for a couple more years, playing and DHing. Sano can rotate with him and we could maybe promise Eduardo 140 games (especially since he can play 2b and SS) with his being part of that 3 man rotation. Plus EE can spell the shortstop and 2b spots. Add a 4th outfielder who can play 1b and DH, and we got enough guys to keep them all involved while giving them their fair amount of rest. Joe makes sense to me. I hope they sign Eduardo too. I think they need to add a Morrison type guy who is actually good. Or give Cave a shot at playing some 1b. Killer? Rooker? Anyway, the idea that Joe is 1 dimensional is more from how they use him than it is what he can do. This guy learned 1b and played gold glove caliber 1b last year. You don't think he could play RF better than Grossman? .Joe is a great athlete, and was a stud quarterback. He is good enough of an athlete to still play outfield in a pinch and I suspect he would play RF better than Grossman. But that is just a suspicion. So I am more of an optimist about Joe for a couple more years..
  2. There are times when a funk takes over a team for a while. Dozier is as human as those other guys who struggled. But the thing about him is he is always better in the second half. And Bert said today that Dozier is playing better and batting .294 in July. I don't know if that is true or not, but I hate it when guys dump on one of our guys, for reasons that are not really reasons. . NO Dozier does not suck NO Dozier is not a bad leader. NO. Dozier is not a me first player. NO. Joe is NOT a bad baseball player. NO. Joe does not suck. NO. Joe should not be forced to retire whether he wants to or not. When I hear these things, I just shake my head. I appreciate something Riv. You have a feel for the game. And baseball is not just about stats and metrics. When you rely on that stuff too much, you miss out on other stuff that matters.
  3. Bert pointed out today that Doze is batting .294 in July. You never woulda known it from all his "fans" on TD.
  4. Well, my point, which you missed, is that you buried Joe before the funeral. As Mark Twain is rumored to have said "It appears that rumors of my death were slightly exaggerated" or words to that effect. Joe is past his prime, sure, but he can still get it done. A leadoff batter driving in 4 runs should be appreciated. As for sample size, did you forget that he has thousands of at bats and three batting titles and an MVP. So I think your comments were unfair. But I think there are a lot of unfair comments about Joe, because he commits the apparent sin of being himself and not Boog Powell, or Papi. I just don't understand that. Joe signed long term with us for many millions less than he could have made with another team. We have had many years of watching one of the all time greats play right here in Twin town. He showed loyalty to us. Loyalty is a two way street
  5. Insanity is too strong.... but it don't make you a bad person. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aLJ7iGBxMk
  6. I'm a Dozier fan and two years ago I opposed a trade. But it is NOT insanity to note how well Eduardo has played. He was leading the league in extra base hits, and with Eddie was carrying the team, all while playing 3 different positions. I would like to keep them both and it could happen. The 5 contending teams don't really need help at SS and only Boston needs a 2b, but not desperately, except for Seattle, which is where I'd like to see Doze land. Cano is due back but not eligible for the post season.
  7. That seems a little harsh don't you think? "Nothing of value?" Nothing?
  8. He was last year And his getting hot spurred the Twins on. His coming back this year coincides with a sweep and a series win
  9. Dozier just homered into the upper deck. How does that affect his trade value?
  10. I don't deal Romero or Lewis for a two year guy. Nope. We have, with Cave 4 outfielders. So we could part with the Killer and Gordon and a bubble arm.
  11. Nobody I'd rather have up with runs on second and third, down 1 run.
  12. Not a bad analysis, but I think when you say "With all due respect" before disrespecting a guy, you are using the first phrase improperly. Joe Mauer is a living legend. He signed here for much less than he would have collected in New York or LA. That showed loyalty. He has played through injuries and concussions and has shown resilience, guts and desire. He is not what he once was, but he is still Joe Mauer. He will quit when he says. To his critics, this is an annoyance. The rest of us are grateful for every day we get to watch him play.
  13. Where you are in a team's rotation is relevant to your team, sure. But it is also relevant to whether the OTHER team even wants you. Nobody is going to come calling for the Twins #5 or the Birds' #5 down the stretch. They are interested not specifically by where you are in the rotation, but where you are in the rotation speaks to your ability, and hence value. My point is, if you need to add pitching, you don't trade away your #2.
  14. I wouldn't diss a guy the day after he just won us the game. Let him feel good for at least one day... I have criticized Bobby's hitting, and I don't think unfairly. But I always hope our guys break out. I don't root for a guy to fail so he will be sent down just because I like somebody better. So even though I have been critical of Wilson, I was happy when he hit that double. Maybe he will hit better now.... maybe Morris was saying that the coaches and pitchers like Wilson because he calls a good game. That is part of the game that we don't get inside info on, so I was glad to hear at least one reason why Wilson is playing. Castro is the starter when he is back, so it will be interesting to see if the Twins are open to bringing in a #1A catcher, or if they will muddle through with a committee approach.
  15. First of all, play on the field is the most important thing, but good play always means you are higher on the pecking order. And the higher you value your pitchers the higher the asking price. So you will ask more for your #2 than you will your #4. And I don't believe for a second that other teams don't give consideration to where the pitcher is on your rotation's pecking order. Teams also know whether they need a #3 or #4. They trade to try to fill those holes. These are people, not robots. Analyzing them as if they are fungible commodities and elevating control or arbitration eligibility isn't the most important thought about what builds a winner. You need to see the whole picture. And a guy who is a leader and good teammate is going to be in demand much more than a meathead with two years of team control. Who cares if you have control if the guy is a cancer in the clubhouse? And I have had players with a million dollar arm and a two bit brain. You don't value the arm as much as you otherwise would, because of the brain. This is why guys with attitude problems don't get many calls while guys who are winners are in demand. Time under control is a mere secondary consideration. Its nice to have control, but who cares about control if he is not good for your team? Your trading partner has to want the pitcher in the first place.
  16. Well, if you need pitching you don't deal Gibson. You make Eduardo a good 2 year offer now. Mauer won't be traded. Period. He will be back next year. The outfield stays pat with Cave as the 4th outfielder. You move Doze and bring up Gordon to give him a look see. I'd try to move Dozier to Seattle. I sort of agree that we have a few starters in waiting. But none of them are proven. Gibson has proven to be our #2. You don't send away your second best starter if you need pitching. and of course, will Pineda and May come back allaway? If Erv regains form, he may feel he has unfinished business in Minny. Here is hoping 1 of those 3 help us next year. Erv being the longest shot. I'd keep Duke and Reed around too. But I'd ship LoMo and Lynn and 'nando.
  17. Gibson is our #2 starter right now. You don't deal a #2 unless you get something great in return. But I don't see us trading him. Our pitching is a stiff wind away from finding out just how solid it is. Odor and Lynn don't inspire me, but they are suitable 4 and 5s. Romero was the 2 or 3 I thought. I want to see if Gonsalves can be a starter in the Show. If he can, I'd trade Lynn, or Odor, but not Gibby. Next year would be Berrios Romero Gibson 1-3, then the next two spots out of Odorizzi, or Gonsalves or Pineda or Slegers or Mejia yada yada yada
  18. For most people, popping up means that you were late on the swing by just a whisker. Most batters use an uppercut swing, To hit a ball squarely, you are really aiming at that middle inch, shown by the narrowest of seams on the baseball. Hit the bottom of that inch and it is a (hopefully) long fly. Hit it on top of the inch and it is a screaming grounder. In between... dead solid perfect... . So in a normal swing trajectory, if yo are under the ball, you are late. Makes sense to me that minor leaguers would have a higher late swing rate. They are younger and still developing, and I think the hesitation of youth .... but is there any way to measure the speed of a swing?
  19. Hang in there. Mauer is past his prime, but he is family and if he wants to play next year, he will. Leadershipwise, he is not a rah rah guy. But neither was Lou Gehrig. Give him some room. I think the rest of the year we identify who we want to go to battle with going forward. Eddie and Eddie and Buck, and Keps and Miggy and Joe.... Polanco and Gordon or Doze... doesn't seem as critical. We got middle infielders. I'm not worried. Guys this is only baseball. It is the national pastime, not the national obsession
  20. I am thinking, new slogan "Nothing falls but raindrops, and not even mucha them. Jake is not gonna cave. He's here to play
  21. They expand the rosters and allow call ups for a reason. And that reason is not to discourage young guys showing off. Minors are auditions for the majors. So September calls ups doing great is a great story. But next year is a long way off. And with the Twins, their mind is often so made up (well, maybe Molly's is) that they may as well not even say that there are open roster spots going into spring training. Lamarre batted .485 in spring training and Molly didn't play him even when he was hotternhell. He played favorites with Grossman, who I like by the way, and played him instead. So why bother busting your ass if you are Lamarre? Molly plays favorites with pitchers too. He over uses certain relievers, like they are so much 6'2'' security blankets. I want to think he will learn. Put me down as in favor of giving AA players --- who are hot --- a chance to jump the line in September and make it. Where is the crime in that? I don't know how many times a minor leaguer has made the team the next year by a good September. But I will tell you, that the real question for me is ...."Do minor leaguers believe... and will they take their shot...?" I hope so. Makes for interesting Septembers.
