  1. Three of the higher upside guys (Feliz, Storen, and Holland) signed with teams that lost 89, 91, and 87 games. I don't buy that we had no chance to sign those guys. Given them more money and a shot at the closer spot.
  2. For better or worse the new FO has hitched their wagon to this idea. From their Twinsfest comments they think they have a pretty good team here that vastly underperformed. That's a dicey belief to hitch your wagon to. It may end up defining their stay here one way or the other. I, for one, would've liked to see more done this offseason to add assets to the bullpen. I think that could loom large.
  3. Boy, those tweets. They were meant to be upbeat and optimistic and instead I couldn't help but wonder what they're thinking.
  4. Right now i'd only consider it for Kepler and Sano but it would depend on the details. I don't mind the thinking at all if the details make sense. But front loading is a pretty rare thing, especially if you're extending a young player. It's good in theory, but it just doesn't happen.
  5. I think getting lost in this conversation a bit is Tom's original point: how do you put a championship caliber pitching staff around Sano/Buxton/Kepler if indeed they develop into a championship caliber offense? When do you reach into your prospects if you aren't willing to deal vets? And that window might be coming faster than people realize.
  6. That's my concern too. If we pass on risky moves because of value, we're basically relying on internal improvements and draftees to save us. It's hard to see a staff of this age (save May and Berrios) making sizable strides and draftees take time. So that means we're burning through time we have this young offensive core together. I loved the Castro signing, but I really hope we see a plan forming soon. This feels so much like Ryan's regime is still in charge that it's frustrating.
  7. I'm with you on that Brock, I was out saying how bad this offseason looked for talent acquisition months ago. But because of that I'd really like to be a fly on the wall of our FO. I wonder what was out there on Santana and Dozier and I worry we may have passed on moves I'd have jumped all over. This will be an interesting offseason to look back on when we know more about our new head honchos.
  8. Well we're sorting of running out of time this offseason and the clock is ticking on team control for all these young hitters we all love. At some point, risks will have to be taken.
  9. Perhaps, but so far we don't have immediate or long-term solutions that have been addressed. We basically are rolling with the same crew. At some point I'd like some immediate and long-term solutions attempted. Sooner rather than later.
  10. In fairness, we're on year 5? 10? of this argument in different iterations: "If we only don't give starts to X players, we'll be so much better!" How's that been working out?
  11. I'm not advocating that DeLeon "fixes" it. Just that he is the kind of upside gamble we have to take along with drafting guys. And I'm especially keen on this gamble given the risks I see with retaining Dozier. But ultimately DeLeon could bust, he's a unique prospect that has a long list of pros and a long list of cons. He's going to be interesting to follow. If he does turn into a James Shields type...then turning this down will have been a huge mistake. If he busts, walking away was wise. Time will tell.
  12. I guess we'll find out if that's true about Deleon or not soon enough. What it comes down to for me is the knowledge that whatever avenue we choose (trade, FA, draft) to improve our pitching, it comes with significant risk of losing value at the outset to gamble on upside. So i'm not going to get hung up on that.
  13. But those improvements are dicey at best and have extremely limited upside both next year and going forward. I mean, I appreciate the plan, but I'd be aiming for much better than this. This, at best, is hoping to be "not terrible" maybe "below average bordering on ok". That's just not good enough.
  14. This is helpful. But I'd like to point out, you are fixing the pitching with basically the same crew we had last year. Serious question - how good can that group ever really be? While I expect a better year from Gibson and Berrios, I expect a worse year from Santana. I also value having Buxton in CF all year and Castro. (i'm on the record being heavily in favor of that move) But we're also about to throw Polanco back at shortstop and Parker pointed out how the metrics aligned way too closely with Nishioka for my comfort level. And shortstop is the most important position. Either way, your pitching plan can't possibly inspire even you with much confidence right? That's a very low upside group. You're basically just hoping for "not terrible". How do we actually become good? And I ask because I like to think your answer really isn't any different from mine when I say "take DeLeon and another solid piece". (just so you see I have a purpose in this) The Zobrist deal has been discussed previously. While I agree they should do better than Manaea and filler, you could easily make the case that DeLeon + something relevant already does that. What we don't know is what else was being offered. If it was junk, i understand walking away. If it wasn't junk (i.e. Calhoun, Stewart, etc) than I think differently.
  15. This also assumes health which gets rolled into the luck equation. And it assumes Berrios and May are starters, which I hope is true. The bullpen and the defense might have been under-discussed so far too.
  16. What do you do about the pitching? And I'd like to know what the similar deals are too, that'd help.
  17. Well the list of people that have taken you to task for you interpretations includes me, mike, spycake, jimmer, and biggentleben among several others. And all of us have a range of opinions on the matter. You have yet to provide a "similar trade". What trades do you think you've presented that are similar? (Also note you completely ignored the first part. I guess magic may not be so far off afterall....)
  18. Well, if not magic...what? I've asked you no less than three times and you refuse to answer that. So, what would you like me to assume since you won't trade, you know we can't pay for it (it's not even there to pay for), so....what? I've heard mike ask you about 10 times too and you slink away from the conversation. And your summary is based on completely debunked examples. You have yet to provide any examples that approximate Dozier. You have offered package deals (which was not what we were offering) or Lucroy. That's the best you've managed to verify your stance. Those have been thoroughly debunked. So if you're view is going to be a summary of things that don't add up, you'll have to excuse me if I don't put much stock in it.
  19. Right, this team's youth makes the possible outcomes for this season pretty broad. But it's going to have to find some pitching somehow for me to approach 80 wins.
  20. I would recommend the Pioneer Press article Brock. Knapp had interesting comments about DeLeon's makeup, he was also quite bullish. At the end of the day the question with DeLeon is how is he maintaining a K rate that successful in the minors with that velocity and is it projectable? That would take some in depth scouting as far as his deception, his changeup, or whatever it is he's using to have that sustained success. That's a rather nuanced question none of us probably have the answer for.
  21. That final analogy is spectacular. We have a TJ Clemmings rotation and we're worried about our backup QB.
  22. You don't know anything for sure either. But only one of us keeps acting like they do. (Hint: you) I only claim to know what we know: DeLeon was the centerpiece and secondary pieces were discussed. I've said before I probably do this for DeLeon and Stewart. Sheffield or Lux would appeal to me too. But I don't know what secondary pieces were discussed and that makes a huge difference.
