Twins 4, Yankees 3: Fourth Time's the Charm
Aerodeliria replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought the game had finished when I checked ESPN for the score....it hadn't. There was a runner on first and one out in the 9th and Fullmer was pitching (I wondered why it wasn't Lopez to be honest) to Hicks. My first instinct and probably the right one was to check my email or get ready for the day ahead, but once Fullmer got ahead on Hicks, the temptation was even stronger to keep my eyes glued to the little dots on the screen. A two-strike double? It was if I was watching Evel Knievel at Cow Palace knowing by the lack of enough speed due to the cramped quarters and then his trajectory in the air that he couldn't quite make the jump, but I couldn't turn away. After the free-pass to Judge, I assumed the game would end on something really weird, like two consecutive walks or a groundball error, where it would be hard to even walk off the field. I still couldn't look away. I voiced this aloud and rather nonchalantly, "The Twins are going to lose in the ninth." My wife said, "He could strikeout," when Torres was at the plate. I laughed a "Nelson-style" laugh. I went to the restroom and left my phone on the breakfast table. I came back and two-outs? I did a double-take on the score. "Hmm...it didn't say Twins 4 Yankees 5 Game Over; it still said Twins 4 Yankees 3. Torres was gone. Now came K-F. Considering that he had been a Twin all of 24 hours, it would be a cruel irony indeed if old K-F beat us once again. My wife again threw out some encouraging words about getting the last out or some such nonsense. On the 2-1 pitch I followed the red line indicating that the ball has been hit as it moved toward the right side of the diamond fully expecting to see the little circles move around the bases in the way that they do in our electronic world, but instead an "X" appeared meaning a groundout to second. "They won," that's all I could say.- 32 replies

Twins 1, Yankees 7: Twins Strikeout in Game 2
Aerodeliria replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know, I know, I know...we do the same thing as Tampa Bay and have the same strategies and philosophy. Then, I wonder why Tampa Bay never plays the Yankees like we do? Good gracious. They just took the Yankees to task in Yankee Stadium.- 27 replies

Twins 1, Yankees 7: Twins Strikeout in Game 2
Aerodeliria replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A tip of the hat if they do. You called 3-7 after the sweep of the Giants. I didn't want to like your prediction but I thought you were right on the money. Someone has to give the Yankees that motivation that they have been missing for weeks. Maybe we can get some playoff money from the Yankees as a present or something...- 27 replies

4 Things to Watch During Louie Varland's Debut
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
5) Throw strikes. The reason the Yankees don't strikeout is that they force the pitchers to throw strikes. They have plenty of hitters who are capable of striking out, but when the pitchers fall behind, as Magill experienced, the party's over. (Unless, one chooses to intentionally walk Judge...which is understandable, but if you're not going to throw him a strike, just wave him down to first base. Don't dink around trying to get him to swing at a bad pitch and then hang one. Just give him the free pass. Besides, that will get the booing started at Yankee Stadium, which is something I would relish.) -
Players like Baldelli as a person but....
Aerodeliria replied to sfe306's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
My point is simple. To say someone is liked or disliked is a poor measurement of anything. If you ask any player on any team whether he likes his manager, what's he supposed to say? In the end, everyone loves the manager, but everyone loves winning more and that's what the goal should always be. -

Twins Take on the Evil Empire This Week
Aerodeliria replied to Theo Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Me too. I predicted 3-7 after the Twins swept the Giants, so far they are right on schedule (2-1 against Boston; 1-2 against the Pale Hose and unfortunately, 0-4 against the Evil Empire). Believe me when I say I hope I'm wrong. In any case, that's why I just casually check in to see the scores well after the games against the Yankees have finished. -
They did more than I expected, so I was satisfied. Even during the losing streak, I wasn't upset about what they got; I was more upset about the way things were managed on the field.

Unfortunately, I agree to the very letter. I hope against hope I am wrong, but that's my exact prediction as well.

What Can Billy Hamilton Provide the Twins?
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Anything to get Gordon and Beckham out of the outfield. Those two just don't track balls well at all and tend to make critically bad decisions, so put o-billy-boy in as a pinch runner late and then into the outfield, so what does he bring? A lot actually. -
I know the Twins have been worse than dreadful in clutch hitting, but does anyone know if someone has been keeping track of the whiffs in those situations? It must also be a dreadful statistic (I'd really like to know...) I rather have the double play ground ball to be honest. At least the batter made contact. The whiff is so demoralizing.

I think the Twins now lead the league in moral victories! Maybe they can get some more of those when they hit the links the first week of October ?

Max Kepler Under Contract for 2023
Aerodeliria replied to strumdatjag's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
But you still can't replace Kepler's defense so easily. I don't know about Wallner's D, but Gordon, despite his speed and athletic ability, is not a good defender in the outfield. -
Week in Review: West Slide Story
Aerodeliria replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't lay the middle game loss on Lopez. Sure he made a terrible pitch to Rubenless Sierra (the guy's a slap hitter, so his entire at bat is just stick the bat out... I'm curious who wanted the pitch on the outside corner...). Nevertheless, why we have our worst outfielder in the game in the 9th inning is the troubling part. Cave or Celestino should be in the game to protect the lead. There was no reason for Gordon to dive there. Only one run scores if you keep the ball in front of you. Tunnel vision earlier in the game by micromanaging the percentages of who should hit against who (we had the lead) contributed to one the worst losses of the season because our best defensive team was not on the field in the 9th.- 17 replies

FLASHBACK 1992: The Eric Fox Game: "God wants a pennant race"
Aerodeliria commented on Otto von Ballpark's blog entry in Otto Gets Blotto
Thanks for this! It was a fun read. I had blotted Eric Fox from my mind, but just reading his name caused a flashback. I feared the A's that year. I knew they were a much better team than the Twins, but that poke in the eye by Eric Fox was really the beginning of the end. -
Are the Twins MLB’s Worst Baserunning Team?
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Preach it! This is fundamental baseball. I hate to always look back to the 80s and 90s, but Tom Kelly would not tolerate bad baserunning, especially by the players. If you screwed up on the basepaths, you might find yourself on the bench for a game to reflect.- 19 replies

Although the Angels are arguably the worst decision-making team at the trade deadline year-in-year out (worse than the Twins), they have to be thinking about moving Ohtani. As Jeff Passan has mentioned, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to keep him because he won't want to sign after 2023 after another -.500 year with the Angels looming, which is likely to be the storyline for at least a couple of more years beyond that. The Angels, maybe more than any other team, have been such poor decision-makers over the years that their farm-system is years away from producing any MLB talent. Are they ready to infuse the upper level of their farm system with some talent that is closer to being ready for the big leagues along with a couple of players that are already at the MLB level? I would say the Twins should throw in the kitchen sink to get Ohtani to sign for 3-5 years. Yes, that would be a bit painful, but that duel threat is something one could only dream about. What would it take? A lot! And the payout would be quite large, but it would be worth it IMHO. I also think Ohtani-san would be more than willing to come to the Twins with Maeda already in the fold. Having another Japanese player to talk with is a hidden advantage. Here is my proposal: Kepler, either Larnach or Kiriloff, and two pitchers from the minors with high upside. Would this move the Angels? Four for one player? Is it enough? (I'm sure some teams would be willing to go down this road.) What do you think?

Why Would the Twins Deal Carlos Correa?
Aerodeliria replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To be honest, this has been one of the more bizarre topics to have dominated TD IMHO. A week after the cheering subsided, I was already seeing posts about trading Correa at the deadline. If that is the position, there seems to be no reason to even sign him in the first place, does there?- 34 replies

I don't even see the purpose. We needed to get stronger up the middle, not get another left fielder irrespective of his upside. This year, we have a very good SS, a decent 3rd baseman, a mediocre 2nd baseman and a mediocre 1st baseman (speaking from strictly fielding). If we get Soto, who plays SS--Nick Gordon?? No way. If we get Correa for one year that's great and if we can get him for three years, even better. Soto, even if he wanted to come here (which I find highly unlikely), is a pipedream that will hurt the Twins in the short term, and maybe even in the long run.
