Does Joey Gallo Make Sense for the Minnesota Twins?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
YES, ABSOLUTELY! We need more guys in the lineup who swing for the fences, seldomly making contact and hitting below the mendoza line. Is there anyone else who you guys will write about, that absolutely makes NO sense to add to this team? He is a left-handed version of SaNO.- 33 replies

3 Big Boppers in Free Agency Who Would Fit the Twins' M.O.
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This only reflects their past mistakes. If you can sign a player that falls into your lap late in the game and he is your best player then what have you done up to that point in previous years? NOTHING! That alone is an embarassment. -
3 Big Boppers in Free Agency Who Would Fit the Twins' M.O.
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Haniger could be another part-timer with with injuries. Martinez is becoming that washed up veteran and Drury could take at bats away from the main guys in the lineup that should be playing every day. Really? And, if they are all still there late in the Free Agent signing period that tells me that no one else wants them, so of course they would fit perfectly on the Twins roster. Seriously, the Twins have to stop with eating the left-overs on the Friday after Thanksgiving and start feasting on Turkey Day. -
This tells me that the Twins value a part-time specialist type player over a prospect that they could protect from the rule 5 draft. Having a player like Garlick take a spot on the 40 man roster will possibly cost a prospect as well. I guess the Twins aren't serious about making improvements to the team. If he would be used ONLY as a pinch hitter against a lefty pitcher late in a game I would have no problem but the Twins have a Manager that will still let him bat against a righty. Saw it many times last year where he started against a lefty and Rocco let him bat when the opposing team brought in a righty later in the game. Mr. Analytic Rocco uses his analytics when he wants and then also refuses to use analytics when he needs to.
-
A player with a ton of talent that couldn't adjust. Can't say how many times I heard others make the remark that if he wouldn't swing so hard at every pitch and would just concentrate on making contact he'd become a much better hitter. Don't know for sure but wonder if the Twins wanted him or enticed him to be an all or nothing type of hitter. My guess is he'll get picked up by some other team and mash 40+ HR's for them. Even so, I don't want to see him in the Twins lineup anymore. Now they just need to get rid of the other two failures in Kepler and Buxton. If Sano was hole #1 in the lineup then Kepler is hole #2. I know I will catch some crap for this but Buxton can't stay on the field and this past year has become an all or nothing type of hitter just like Sano was. All 3 are/were over-rated IMO.

Do the Twins Need to Fix Jorge Lopez?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fleeced again. This is a prime example of a club, (Baltimore) selling high on a player that has no history of being anything but bad. There's a sucker born every minute and there's the Twins organization that falls for it time after time. -
Is a Splurge on Relief Worthwhile for Minnesota?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would not spend on another reliever. My money goes to Rodon to fill the Ace vacancy in the rotation. This effectively adds another reliever by pushing either Maeda or Winder to the bullpen to be used as a long reliever which is soooo badly needed if the starters are not going to go at least 6 innings. The rotation if it is healthy would be Rodon, Gray, Mahle, Ryan, and Ober. The back end of the bullpen would be Jax, Thielbar, Alcala, Moran, Lopez, Duran.- 23 replies

What Went Wrong with the 2022 Twins Pitching Experiment?
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Filling the rotation with starters who can at least stay healthy and excel in 4-5 inning starts. Finding at least one workhorse type starter who can reliably give you 6+ innings each turn. Equipping the bullpen with enough firepower and multi-inning relievers to shoulder the load. Having one central mastermind oversee the operation (and if it's not working, find someone new). These are all very good points but I'd like to lean on the 4th one on this list. Doesn't this fall upon the Manager? Last time I checked he is running the day to day operations of the team making in game decisions. Or is he just a puppet doing what he is told? If the Manager can't see when something is not working when it unfolds right in front of him and does nothing to change it then the ONLY answer is to "find someone new".- 39 replies

Will the Front Office Choose to Build a Better Bullpen?
rv78 replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
They can very quickly solve two problems in Free Agency. Add Rodon for your Ace and Contreras for your other catcher. Both make the team considerably better going into 2023. Rodon makes Gray your #2 instead of your #1 and moves Ryan. Mahle, Ober and the young guys, Winder, Varland, SWR, all down one notch in pecking order as well. Slide Maeda into a long-relief role. Release Pagan and give his spot to Ronnie Henriquez as another long reliever. Then fill the back of the pen with Thielbar, Jax, Moran, Alcala, Lopez and Duran. Yeah, that's 16 guys but they'll need 'em all eventually. Stashak will probably be back as well with options to use Sands and Megill. Enlow and Balazovic both on the 40 man may see some time in 2023 too. I wouldn't resign Fulmer as he is borderline effective and there are currently other in-house options just as good as him. By the way, can we stop seeing pictures of worthless players like Duffey? They only conjure up bad memories that we'd like to forget about.- 40 replies

Handbook Preview: 3 RP Reunions the Twins Should Consider
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No, No, and No. If a Championship is the goal the Twins have to stop aiming low. Interestingly there is another article here on Twins Daily about a pitcher called Pressly. None of these 3 are anywhere close to his caliber, which is the ONLY type of pitcher they should be looking to acquire. When you always settle for 2nd best or less you will always be 2nd best or less. Go big or go home. Pitching wins Championships.- 28 replies

Planning for the Future Behind the Plate
rv78 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with Mark G. I don't get the "other needs" mantra either. Jeffers goes down and there is no one. Go get Contreras.- 26 replies

I never said to go with a prospect in 2023. I said a 1 or 2 year deal would be fine. And I also said unfortunately that Correa won't be looking for that type of deal. Doesn't mean a different big league SS wouldn't fill the bill for a year or two until 1 of those prospects is ready to take over. If it doesn't happen then you are in no way any worse off then you are now and in the meantime you added a quaility catcher (Contreras) and a stud pitcher (Rodon).
-
I will stand by my reasoning that the money would be better spent elsewhere. The Astros are a prime example of that. Yes. SS is an important position to have a quality player at but if you fill your other positions with capable players that can hit and field, run and throw, and pitch effectively then the best SS isn't and shouldn't need to be a priority.

Rumor: Jim Pohlad "Totally on Board" with re-signing Correa
rv78 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'd venture to guess the "totally on board" mantra will be if Correa falls into their lap. again. Otherwise it won't happen, which I'm fine with, IF they spend the money to improve the team elsewhere. -
I've been shouting for a Kepler departure for 2 years now. Over-rated. Buxtons last 2 injuries have been the slide into 2nd base AND getting HBP in the hand. Neither had anything to do with playing CF. Before I move him to LF or RF I trade him. I have yet to see having a part-time CFer equate into a WS ring.

Can Catcher Be Where the Twins Find Offense?
rv78 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes get Contreras. All he will cost is money which the Twins have plenty of with Correa and Sano coming off the books. Stop trading top prospects away for players other teams are willing to let go when really good players are available as Free Agents.- 21 replies

Sorry, I just don't understand the Correa committment for big money for many years if it hamstrings the opportunity to sign a few other guys that strengthen the team in other spots. How many potential SS do we have coming? Lewis, Lee, Martin, Miller. How many potential catchers do we have coming? Nothing compared to SS. How many potential Ace pitchers do we have coming? Nothing compared to SS. One can honestly say SS has become a strength in the farm system. Sure thay can play elsewhere but last time I looked they can't catch or be a top pitcher. My money would go to Rodon and Contreras. For what it's worth, Correa didn't lead the team this year to the playoffs and the Astros got there without him.... just saying.
-
I agree the worry is silly. It however will be the first thing that a lot of Twins fans will think of the first time they see Lewis in the outfield again. I actually don't see Lewis sticking at SS and Lee taking that spot pushing Lewis somewhere else. As for Correa money, I just think it would be better off spent elsewhere, like for Rodon AND Contreras. If it takes roughly the same amount of money to get those 2 verses 1 Correa, I think that 2 is better than 1 in this case.
-
I'm all for signing Rodon and Contreras. Just not sold on Correa only because of the long-term committment it will take. If we could get him for another 1 or 2 years I'd say definitely, but unless other teams punt on him like they did last year, I don't see that happening. I want the position open for Lewis or Lee going forward. If Lewis goes to the outfield because SS is blocked by Correa I'll cringe everytime he goes into the wall. Where does Lee play when he's ready? Kepler, Urshela, Polanco will be gone before too long. I see Julien going to 2B. Miranda at 3B. Arraez at 1B. Larnach, Buxton, Kirilloff, Gordon, Martin, Celestino in the OF. Lewis and Lee both at SS? Probably not. Does one displace Miranda at 3B forcing him to play 1B and DH with Arraez? If Rocco continues with his rotating lineup on an everyday basis they'll all play 3 or 4 games a week. Do we really want Correa blocking these young guys or forcing them to positions they are not use to playing. We already have Miranda at 1B with arguments he shouldn't be there? How good was Sano in RF or 1B? Not very good. I say pass on Correa if it takes more than 1 year to get him but use the money to add Rodon and Contreras.

15 Free Agent Starters the Minnesota Twins Could Target
rv78 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If they don't sign a difference maker, which I highly doubt they will, I'd just as soon see them go with what they have giving the young guys a chance to prove themselves. They seriously need to upgrade the offense after watching almost every guy on base be left on base. If they can score a couple more runs per game the pitching doesn't have to be lights out. -
If any organization would or should know that "you get what you pay for".... it is the Twins. Pretty sure, without looking for it, the Twins drew over 3 million fans with a Kirby Puckett led team that provided a winning, enthusiatic, fun to watch product on the field every game. All St. Peter has to do is look in his rear view mirror and see what it takes to put fans in the stands. He may be disappointed that the fans didn't support this 2022 team better but the differences between the team then and the team now is night and day. I will only give you one example, who would you prefer to go see,? Kirby Puckett playing in CF or Byron Buxton sitting in the dugout recovering from an injury?
-
I for one, would not complain the last 5 years of a 10 year contract if he helps bring in 3 or 4 World Series Championships in those first 5 years. The last guy they went out and got that wasn't a long-term Twins that led them to a Championship was Jack Morris and I didn't care what they paid him. They just went and got what they needed. I'd feel the same way about Correa.
-
Polanco needs to stay a Twin at least through his current contract. He is the one guy that can carry the team offensively for a week or two at a time. Being a switch hitter also helps to keep him in the lineup with Rocco over-using his lefty/righty analytical BS. The Twins need to decide what they are going to do at 1B. Is the plan going forward a combo of Arraez and Miranda with Urshela at 3B? How confident are they about having a healthy Larnach and Kirilloff for 2023? If they think both will be ready to roll I'd move Kepler in a trade for another bullpen arm or backup to Buxton that isn't just a defensive specialist. Kepler's been a hole in the lineup since his one and only career year in 2019. If all they want is someone who can play defense in the outfield they can go with a cheap Celestino instead of Kepler, which is about all he's become. I'd like to see Wallner play all of 2023 in AAA and show me he isn't just a HR happy pull hitter like Kepler before he gets a lot of playing time in the bigs. Will also need another catcher to platoon with Jeffers. Oh, yeah, that dog-gone SS position needs someone too. With this FO I wouldn't be surprised to see an infield of Arraez-1B, Polanco-2B, Urshela-SS and Miranda-3B, with Gordon rotating in and out of 2B and SS with those guys sliding to different spots as well. When the 2022 season started I thought this team would be able to actually go for it in 2023, with Lewis, Kirilloff, Larnach all having a full major league season under their belts. Now it looks to be another wait and see season before we know how good they will be.
