    Here is every single big move from the 2019 trade deadline. It seemed as if every single team waited until about one minute after the trade deadline passed to announce their moves, but in the end it was a fun and exciting deadline. The Twins did what they set out to do by acquiring two back end relievers so this is not as disappointing as most Twins fans will tell you. It wasn’t perfect, but it was exactly what most of us have been asking for all season.

    Here is every move made during this deadline season. It includes prospect rankings per MLB Pipeline. If they weren’t on the top 30 for a team then they are listed as NR (not ranked).

    Are the Twins odds of winning the AL Central better than they were 1 week ago?

     

    Are the Twins odds of winning the ALCS better than they were 1 week ago?

     

    If the answer to either of those is “no” how can the deadline be described any other way than at best disappointing?

    Clubs weren't selling. The Yankees have pitching issues and didn't land anyone. Other clubs with major pitching needs landing nothing or marginal guys. It was a weird market.

     

    The one guy fans can rationally argue about is Stroman. He was dealt and we more or less know what the cost would have been.

     

    But otherwise, it seems to me that the Twins did a reasonable job by adding 2 relievers. Not thrilling, but also reflective of the market.

    Overall it’s a meh for me. I think Dyson will help out and be a more solid bullpen arm than Romo. I’m happy for what we traded for we didn’t overspend. That said, I’m disappointed we didn’t move on a starter. Robbie Ray or Mike Minor would have been legitimate upgrades to what we have in the rotation right now minus Berrios. While it might have cost some more in more legitimate prospects our FO has to understand that’s the risk you take when you have the “window” open for a deep playoff run (if not a championship). To me it still feels like the Twins FO stopped short. I’ll hope for the best, but I know you never should take a magical season like this for granted.

    The Twins already have a top ranked offense and a top 5 or 6 rotation. Though could use another top end starter. The bullpen is essentially fixed now. So it's not like there were lots of available options to make this team better. But I really wanted a wow move. I got 2 solid move. Very Terry Ryan like.

    Fair way to look at it. My take...

     

    The post-season competition for the pennant is a tournament. The three possible participants against which the Twins would be substantial underdogs:  the Yankees, Astros, and Red Sox (although currently 2 games out in the WC). Against 2 of these three teams, our odds probably got slightly better. Meanwhile, I don't think our odds to win the central are materially worse. I like what the Indians did...but especially, I like what it did longer-term for them.

     

    Not a disaster, but primarily because of what other teams failed to do...not because of what the Twins FO WAS able to do.

    The Yankees getting nothing is the best part of this deadline event.

    The Yankees will probably get a #1 starter by about Sept 15th in Severino. The Twins don't have anyone like that lurking around about to do a rehab assignment.

    I'm not sure the Mistake by the Lake is a winner.

    Concur.

     

    On paper, their big trade addresses weakness, by dealing away from strength.

     

    But I think intangibles are going to play a bigger role than usual for them. The guy they discarded was polarizing, and they replaced him with someone differently polarizing. I don't believe this balances out, and instead could be somewhat additive.

     

    I don't know anything about Dyson's public personality, but judging by Romo's early interactions, along with previous roster additions, it seems the Twins FO places a significant premium on chemistry and fit. As someone more from the analytic side of the spectrum... I think they may actually be onto something with that.

    I guess the window wasn't preceived as open, and it was determined the cold north wind was just blowing hard and making that howl that said....... "This is it. This is the time. Now." The culprit crack was filled with a couple of relief pitchers that were better than what we had, and there you have it. No great starter was added, and you can still see through the window.

    It was a seller's market. Most seller's was wanted overpays for better players. Would have liked more, but given the parameters, Twins did fine. Astros became the favorite, it will still be difficult.

    I think the Stros were the favorite before the Greinke trade, this just solidified their standing. We are good enough to play with anyone as long as we don't beat ourselves.

    I think we'd be slight dogs against the Yankees and slight favorites against the Red Sox.

    Is there any chance someone like Graterol or Duran might make a late season appearance in the Twins' bullpen?

    I think we're a year early for Duran in the majors, and it depends how Graterol's shoulder recovery goes. They need to be extra careful with him.

     

    I wonder why the Mets didn't trade Wheeler? The Twins, and any number of teams, would have given them a LOT more than the rando they'll get with their compensatory draft pick. Maybe they still think they have hopes of making the wild card, or of resigning him.But if they'd dealt him they could have gotten some really good prospects.

     

    The Mets aren't making any sense, I guess they're going for a 2019 playoff run? Good luck!

    I'd put MN in the winner line. Barely, but there.

     

    It does show, imo, that assuming you can add to your team at the deadline to fix anything you passed on fixing earlier isn't necessarily true. Sometimes those fixes aren't available (I'm thinking the Yankees here, mostly).

    The Twins should have added a starter. That said, several teams were trying to buy and sell and not making sense.

     

    What are the D-Backs thinking? Why trade Grienke, replace him with Leake and hold on to Ray? So you can still give a half-hearted shot at the WC?

     

    Same for the Giants. And the Reds. And the Mets. And the Rangers

    I loved how the Dbacks got that Marlin kid who shut us down last night. It might have been a John Ryan Murphy move but I thought he'd be a good get. But i didn't think the Marlins wouldn't be trading away a promising young starter. I guess it wouldn't have hurt to ask we probably could have got him for Gordon based on the return.

    How much of an improvement is Robbie Ray or Mike Minor for this year? I really don't know if anyone was worth what the sellers were demanding. The Twins were less desperate for starting pitchers than several other teams and besides Greinke and his giant contract (and Stroman) starters didn't move.

    What were the solid deadline deals Ryan made? Stewart- anyone else?

     

    Getting Pavano, Cabrera, Rauch, Fuentes, even Capps was Bill Smith.

     

    Ryan would more likely ship off major league players like Lawton and Redman and not improve the team at all.

    I would have traded the farm for Noah Syndergaard with two more seasons on the books. I would have done it four years ago. I would have done that three years ago. I would have done it last year, and I would have done it today.

     

    Not two years ago tho... This way you avoid a clear recognizable pattern.  :)
