Article: Twins Minor League Report (5/16): Buxton Blasts Kernels to Win

Recommended Posts

Wow. There have only been something like 26 "ultimate grand slams" in the history of MLB (about as many times as there are Perfect Games in MLB history). Rare, exciting and very cool - regardless of the affiliate level it occurred at.

The other thing worth mentioning is that Colabello's jack was off Chris Archer, the Ray's #4 prospect, and #43 in all of baseball (according to MLB.com). That means Colabello has hit his 3 homers in the past two days off of the #3 and #4 (and #42 and #43) prospects for the Rays. Pretty impressive.

I will be in Cedar Rapids on Sunday afternoon. Is Berrios pitching by chance?

Per MiLB.com--yes Berrios will be pitching...you got lucky. I check scheduled starters pretty regularly cause my adopt-a-prospect (Brett Lee) is on roster and pitches (like all Kernel starters) about once a week. (Lee goes Monday).

FYI

According to the Kernels website: Duffy pitches tonight (Friday) and Berrios pitches tomorrow (Saturday) and Tomshaw pitches on Sunday - with Lee again Monday. That seems to be the correct order. OFF TUESDAY and Then they go with Boyd and Meloatakis to start Beloit series next Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

With all of the improvements in our prospects accross the board. I'd like to see our list of top 25-30 prospects as of now as several have moved up the rankings. Pinto, Baxendale, Walker, Goodrum, Collabello plus all of the names Sano, Meyer, Buxton, future is definately looking bright.

Buxton(CF), Mauer©, Sano(3B), Colabello(1B), Adam Walker(LF), Rosario(2B), Arcia(DH), Jorge Polanco(SS), Hicks(RF). Bench: Josmil Pinto©, Kepler, Danny Santana (infielder), Daniel Ortiz(outfielder). This roster would give me all the confidence in the world. However they really need to work on the defense though. After that we just need to add some impressive arms to the rotation?

...top 25-30 prospects as of now as several have moved up the rankings. ...Collabello...

You do realize that Colabello is only 6 months younger than Joe Mauer, don't you? He might be a semi-useful player right now, but generally when we talk prospect we're talking about someone with projected future development.

I'd love to see him get a shot like Seth's old teammate Chris Coste, and maybe he can hit enough to hang around for a little bit. Coste had the advantage of being a catcher, so he didn't have to hit as much to keep a job (although it seems to me he did pretty well.)

Colabello has only played 2 games in the OF this year, so he appears to be limited to 1B/DH, which puts him behind Morneau and Mauer at 1B (and Parmelee, althogh that is becoming less of an obstacle every day) and Doumit, Mauer, Willingham, and Arcia at DH. If he gets a chance (and that's no guarantee, although it looks likely that he will get the call at some point) he had better come out hitting, because he probably is only going to get one shot, and he will be on a short leash.
