  1. I think fewer innings behind the plate is helping both catchers immensely. How much of Garver's bananas season can be attributed to that? I can't imagine that he would keep up at this rate if catching 70-75% of the games, closer to a traditional starter/back model. Catching is hard. Turns out 2 catchers OPSing over .800 is a pretty nice luxury.
  2. I think I noticed Smeltzer tipping pitches last night with men on. Didn't seem to matter at all as he pitched brilliantly. He kind of bounces his right foot before he gets set. Granted, I couldn't count every time because of the broadcast, but I got fastball/curveball right every time (maybe 10 pitches). 8 bounces for a curve, 9 for the cheese. I hope this was just coincidence and not a trend. Maybe it's a good sign...tipping pitches and they still can't hit it. Something to watch for his next outing. Let me know if anyone else sees it.
  3. Sorry to pile on about the Sano chemistry question, but how is it we're asking about Sano fouling up the chemistry in a lineup that's crushing it and at the same time clamoring for Kimbrel to join the BP. If any personality is gonna blow up team chemistry, my money would be on Kimbrel, not Sano.
  4. Starting pitching has been a nice little surprise this year. I'm a little worried that all this new found velo could lead to a few elbows blowing up. Maybe it's years of MN fandom, but I just don't see this uptick in sauce being free. Maybe Wes is some sort of wizard, but throwing the ball faster has got to be harder on your arm, right? I'm going to attempt to put that out of my mind and enjoy it while it lasts. Sure was fun to watch Perez dominate HOU.
  5. There have been lots of debates about whether La Makina is an ace or not....He's an ace. I'll stand by that until he proves me wrong. Buxton looked good on that double. Nice quiet swing, squared it up and sure enough that ball left home plate 21lbs faster than last year. I am completely refreshed, baseball is back and Rocco seemed to have no hesitation about a 4 out save. Not sure Molly would have done that. Sure is fun beating teams in the AL Central, here's to seeing more of it.
  6. While I think there is some truth to this, I can't help but picture that highlight from last year of Kepler catching a lace with his cleats and falling flat on his face out in right. Poise, grace and pure athleticism...
  7. I like the increased velocity that Johnson seems to be able to squeeze out of guys. It's a refreshing after enduring the "pitch to contact" philosophy for so long. Power pitching is fun to watch. Is anyone concerned that upping the velocity across the board with these guys is going to lead to more injuries? Seems too good to be true; just whisper sweet nothings into pitchers ears and they throw harder with no ill effect? Call me excited, but skeptical.
  8. Can Schoop play SS at all? I like this signing, but I like it a whole bunch more if it happens a couple months ago. Seems like this would have been a good place to start this off season (Granted, maybe Marwin wouldn't have taken this deal earlier). If he signs first do we rethink the Schoop or Cron signings?
  9. I agree with the cream and pinstripes, but that gold trim is awful. The '19 home alternates might be one of the ugliest unis I've seen in a while. Thanks for putting this out there, always fun to look back at the old unis.
  10. Was that CJ Cron Astudillo got to pop out? Walked off the field like a boss. He knew it was an out as soon as he let it go!
  11. Great article! Sounds we should save a little money, throw back to the player/manager days and have him act as DH and hitting coach. Everyone seems excited about how he may work with and unlock Sano somehow. That would be great and is the obvious comparison. I'd like to see him work just as much with Buxton. Both those fellas need to figure out how to recognize and hit big league breaking stuff. Seems like Cruz's approach in the past has focused on just that.
  12. Boy, the FO sure blew it on this one... switching from Grossman to Cruz at DH. How are we gonna make up the 15 points of OPB we lost? Sure we picked up 125 points of SLG, but where is the OBP coming from? 32 extra HR sounds nice, but who's gonna be on base?
  13. Maybe the prettiest swing I've seen in my lifetime. A work of art. I watch baseball for things like his swing, Santana's change-up, and Mike Trout's Mike Troutness...Thanks Joe!
  14. I sure don't like the Opener. Anyone have some stats on how our Openers have done this year? Sure seems like they give up a lot of runs. Maybe I just notice it more because I think it is such a dumb idea...
  15. I really liked the effort and the emotion from Lynn. Seemed like he didn't care when he was getting shelled and now he turns in a gem and is pissed. OK, kind of weird, but as long as the gems keep coming, stay mad. I didn't like two guys getting cut down at the plate in a scoreless game. Both guys, Adrianza and LoMo were out by a mile. I can't remember the last time I saw someone thrown out at the plate on a wild pitch.
  16. Pure baseball...I'm going to miss watching him play. That throw to get Long at third years ago is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen on a diamond.
  17. He looks so frustrated up there. It's tough to hit in that state of mind. I would suggest a couple games of going up to bat looking for a walk. That's not an ideal approach for a DH, I know but neither are infield pop flies. Reign in the swinging at bad pitches and look to go 1-2 with a pair of walks every night for a week. It just doesn't look like he is going hit his way out of this slump. I am struggling to see any improvement over the course of the season so far.
  18. They tried to enforce the batter staying in the box rule for about a week. Then gave up on it. They've shortened up the break between innings a little and that helped, but the way bullpens are used now and the need for ad revenue are going to make the game longer than it was in the 20s. Tough to do much about those issues, but an easy target is the mound visits. Keep the hitters in the box and the catchers behind the plate and see where that gets us. If we still can't shorten the games then let's change some rules. I suppose you could argue that we are already at that point. How bout each team that wins a game in under 2hrs 45min gets a bonus?
  19. I'm not sure whether the pitch framing stats flush this out or not, but my eye sure did. Watching Castro v. Suzuki catch is like night and day. I seem to recall many times that Suzuki would set up inside, the pitcher misses his spot and maybe hits the outside corner but because Suzuki has to lay out to catch the ball there is no chance at getting the call. Castro is so much quieter behind the plate even on the pitches that miss by a mile. Just a nicer catcher to watch play.
  20. This is closest the Twins have ever been to eliminating the Yankees in the playoffs. The Yankees are one game away from blowing the "series."
  21. Does anyone know what other SP are rumored to be on the block? I think the return for Erv depends heavily on that market, obviously. Sounds like a buyers market to me, which doesn't bode well for moving Santana. It's Dozier all over again...How many times did I read "Only trade him if the offer blows us away... His value has never been higher." Same goes for the Erv.
  22. Man, lots of negativity and second guessing the FO, which is kind of fun, I admit. But did anyone watch JO pitch? Filthy! Jose Fernandez comparisons, nasty nasty stuff and 11Ks. Pretty fun to watch. I know I betray my Minnesota fandom roots by getting excited rather than just waiting for the wheels to come off, but I enjoyed watching one of our young starters pitch. When was the last time that happened? Duff man? Maybe May a little? It's been a while since anyone looked like Jose. If he can show a little consistency I might just freak right out. Here's to another 190 Ks for the kid!
  23. The questions I have with this "odd" lineup are: I seem to recall that there was some trepidation with the Buxton hitting first because of the pressure of leading off...so we slot him in the "low-pressure" spot of hitting third. Not sure that makes sense to me. Mauer is the quintessential two hitter. Sure RG had a slightly higher OPB last year, but Mauer has a career .391 OBP. I just have a hard time seeing Grossman as a top of the order DH. I'm all for rethinking the way a this team takes the field after last year. But it seems like this is just a odd lineup for an odd lineups sake, but I guess as long as we win...
