    Definitely growing concerned about the overuse of Hildenberger. Busenitz seems to be doing well. Not sure why he wasn't used in Sunday's game or even last night. Since Sugust 1, Alan has 10 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K. Sounds like a guy who is prepared for a larger role. The Twins aren't going to get into postseason by relying on 3 relievers in games they are leading.

    I don't know what Slegers has to do to get another shot. His first start was very good. He's been great in AAA all year and his most recent start was borderline dominant. Sure, he had the one clunker a week ago. Probably had jet lag.

    Will be out in left field tonight with my mom. Dad was a big Twins fan. Lots of games attended by us as a family.

    I vaguely recall many on this site getting into an organizational bashing frenzy when Buxton's new hitting approach (shorter stride designed to make better contact) was featured in an article. I would pull it up, but am WAY too lazy today. So far the results are pretty good I would say. Who is going to belly up for the first serving of crow?

    I know it seems like the steroid era bypassed the Twins hitters, but I am pretty sure the Twins have never gone through a 119 game stretch hitting just 12 HR. Maybe the Senators back in the dead ball era.

    He's not listed as a player who is out of options, so I would assume he does. But who comes up? Slegers maybe if they think an arm for tomorrow is needed to back up Gibson (a very real concern IMO). Boshers would be eligible Tuesday, but he's a loogy, period. Using him against RHB hasn't ended well.

    Personally, I'd say very low. He was fortunate to only allow one run to a punchless Chicago lineup with all the traffic he allowed. Gee allowed two hits to the Sox and he got pummeled today. Playing on turf is never going to help a sinker ball pitcher like Gibson. Side note: what Scott Erickson did on the 1991 "superfast rug" is truly amazing. The Jays lineup also has multiple hitters that punish mistakes. Gibson makes his share.

    I'll agree on Hildenberger. But "The Book" says you don't use your closer on the road when you are trailing. If you use him to keep the game close, who do you use if you get the lead?

    So, looking at the bullpen chart, I see 3 guys available tomorrow, maybe 4. Belisle, Rogers and Busenitz should be good to go. Duffey threw 19 today (ineffectively), but hadn't pitched since the Monday doubleheader before today. He's the guy on the fence. I suspect he'd be called upon if the game turns south to go an inning or two. Hildenberger has worked 4 of the last 5 days (granted just 1 pitch yesterday). He's out IMO. Pressly threw 25 today. Out. Perkins pitched today. I highly doubt he ever pitches back to back again as a Twin. Out. Curtiss has thrown almost 30 pitches in the last two days. Out. Good thing Monday is an off day. It's amazing. Actually, it's sickening. 8 fricking relievers and it still isn't enough. 13 pitchers. 6 or 7 that I have confidence in right now. Not exactly a good ratio.

    A hit? Seriously, fielding percentage is now a worthless stat. The ball hit him in the GLOVE. That play has to be made!

    From yarnivek's facebook feed, Today in Twins History: Eight years ago today I attended my final game at The Hubert Horatio Humphrey Metrodome. The Twins won in walk off fashion but it was otherwise a thoroughly ugly and forgettable game. Something called Armando Gabino made his first (and only) MLB start. It did not go well. He lasted 2 2/3, gave up 5 hits, 3 walks and 4 runs. He was followed by the equally forgettable Phillip Humber. He faced 8 batters, allowing 1 hit, 4 walks and recorded 3 strikeouts. Bobby Keppel took the game to the 7th, by which point the game was already 2 1/2 hours old. Jesse Crain pitched two shutout innings. Jose Mijares pitched a perfect 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, the M&M boys grounded out. Then Michael Cuddyer singled. Jason Kubel pinch hit and drew a walk. Up to the plate stepped Delmon Young, already with 3 singles in the game. He worked the count full and drove a pitch to RF that plated Michael Cuddyer and gave the Twins a 7-6 win. I think I got home (to Winona) at about 1 am. But, at least they won.

    I still burn over the 1999 gold glove for first base. It went to Rafael Palmeiro. Now, he was a very good fielder in his prime and I'm sure he fielded reasonably well in 1999. But he only appeared in 30 some odd games at first in 1999. It is just starting to change, but I paid zero attention to who won the gold glove after that. That was utter nonsense and an embarrassment to MLB, Rawlings and Palmiero.

    They apparently have a blind spot when it concerns Kyle Gibson.

    I think the Twins should stick with whatever their original plan was. If it was a pitch count limit or an IP limit. You aren't going to do Romero any favors if he can't pitch deeper into the season. As long as he isn't feeling pain in his arm, stick with whatever the plan originally was. He has to be getting close to whatever cap the Twins have in mind.

    I don't know what SDI measures, but Valencia has 9 errors at first base. Not saying errors are the be all stat of fielding. But that total is kinda hard to ignore.

    If you dig a little further into 2015, you will see very good first half, bad second half. Indeed, the first half of 2015 is the only substantial period of Gibson's career when he wasn't average to poor.

    Yeah, Gibson went 4 last time. And threw more pitches than Selgers, who went 6 1/3. As for giving credit to Falvey if the Twins win, I'll keep an open mind if A) Gibson actually pitches at least 6 innings - something he has done in less than 1/3 of his starts this year B ) the Twins offense scores fewer than 8 runs - in other words, Gibson actually had to keep the Sox offense in check. He's given up 5 runs or more in 1/3 of his starts this year. He's only made 3 starts in which he gave up fewer than 3 runs. Gibson isn't good. Hasn't been good for more than 2 years now. I have no idea if Slegers will stick long term as a starter for the Twins (or anywhere else). But right now I think he gives the team a considerably better chance to win. It baffles me that the decision makers who have watched these guys pitch, don't see it that way.

    FWIW, the 2016 AL Gold Glove first baseman was Mitch Moreland, who is now on a different team than last year. He also hasn't been nearly as good defensively as last year. The 3 previous seasons it was Eric Hosmer. He is doing well defensively. Those two are probably Mauer's competition. Per fangraphs defensive rankings, it's not close.

    Don't be too jealous. I live in Winona. The home of Bloedow's. If you haven't heard of Bloedow's. You don't live in Minnesota. Or Wisconsin. Or Iowa. Heading there in about half an hour.

    So did Slegers. Yet the decision makers decided to keep Gibson and have him start tonight instead. If the Twins lose tonight's game, it is all on Falvey. Gibson has been supposedly pitching for his job all year. He's been terrible all year other than a handful of starts. Yet for some inexplicable reason, they keep giving him the ball.
