Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Third Base
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kepler is a plus fielder, even in CF. Sano is one of the worst defensive third basemen in MLB. If Sano doesn’t hit, he’s utterly useless. Kepler can help even hitting poorly. That matters. -
Working a guy more than every other game for an extended period is simply too much for anyone. It isn’t about innings per month. It’s about appearances per team game at an unsustainable level. And yes, I think it is physical breakdown. The fastball has less zip. The breaking ball has less bite. I know there are people here who are a lot better at breaking down in season velocity and break rate changes than I am. I just know what my eyes were telling me.

You are not looking nearly deep enough into the numbers. On July 8, 2016, Pressly made appearance # 44 in game # 86. It was clear at the time that his stuff wasn’t as sharp. And there was no reason to overwork him. The 2016 team was never in the race. Apparently, the manager realized this during the AS break, cut his load and he was able to finish out the season with only 28 appearances in the team’s remaining 76 games. I speculated at the time (not sure if it was on this board - that may have been rube chat that far back) that the damage may have already been done and that Pressly would likely struggle the following year, especially if he was overworked early again. Sure enough. On May 7, 2017, Presly made appearance number 15 in game number 29. The results had been so poor to that point, the Twins had no choice but to reduce his workload. Big shock, his ERA dropped 4 points the rest of the way with a lower workload.

This team doesn’t have a lights out closer and has (at best) two “lights out” relievers - May and Rogers.

He was, to that point, also ridiculously overworked. He made his 41st appearance on June 29 during team game number 78. He was on pace to appear in 85 games. Mike Marshall holds the team record with 90 appearances in 1979. “Everyday” Eddie had 83 in 1996 and JC Romero had 81 in 2002. No other Twin has ever been over 80. Houston drastically cut his workload. That is what made him an elite reliever IMO.

Was it ever wise to bat him leadoff, period? Even against RHB, Jacque had a mediocre career .340 obp.

If you’re going to count Molitor who was WAY past his prime when he came to Minnesota, you should count Dave Winfield in 1993 as well.

Article: Miguel Sano To Miss Opening Day

What does benching him accomplish? You’re going to pay him to not develop? Waste a roster spot?- 112 replies

Maybe have umpires that actually call balls snd strikes by the rule, not what they think the zone should be. Problem solved.

I wish the umpires would focus on maximizing the strike zone.

30 guys making $600 K (or whatever minimum is these days) isn’t quite the same as basically every team rostering a loogy type for $2-3 mil or more. As for it being a “joint announcement”, that’s kinda meaningless. MLB can implement changes with a year’s notice per the current agreement so the MLBPA has no choice but to aquiesce.
-
MLBPA is going to fight the 3 batter minimum tooth and nail. It is going to eliminate loogy types completely. I don’t think I like going back to 15 day DL. I think it may put teams in the position of asking a guy to “tough it out” when slightly injured (thus possibly risking further damage) whereas with a ten day DL the player would go on it right away. The days of rewarding a prospect with a September cup of coffee likely die with a 28 man limit. You almost need that. It will also be problematic when injuries come up in September. Now, you will be forced to DL a guy and bring up someone who hasn’t played in 2-3 weeks or longer.

Who’s talking about regular hot dogs? We’re talking about the hot dogs served at the ballpark. From the Twins official website: The quarter-pound all-beef Twins Big Dog will replace the hot dog formerly known as the Dome Dog and will be served at portable grills and select concessions stands throughout the stadium.

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Right Field
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m not sure that jibes with reality. A right fielder running toward center field is going to have his left ear closer to the center fielder on plays over his head. His right ear would be closer only on plays in front of him - when he should be able to see the center fielder.- 25 replies

I don’t know where you buy your meat. Good hot dogs cost about $1 per quarter pound dog, which is what most ballpark hot dogs weigh. Bun and average condiments prrobably about $.25. Whatever packaging is probably 2-3 cents per. Of course, you also are paying for someone to make it and someone to bring it to your seat. Figure probably at least $1 worth of labor costs and $.25 for overhead costs like utilities, taxes, food licensing fees, etc. Your 40 cent hotdog now costs $2.25.
-
The fact that he’s out of options makes him unattractive to other teams. They can’t shuttle him back and forth. In this day of 12-13 man pitching staffs, a guy that basically hits and does nothing else and realistically plays only first base is not a luxury most teams can afford to roster unless he is going to be their starter.
