  1. How soon we forget. Les Straker pitched 6 shutout innings in game 3 in St. Louis and left with a 1-0 lead.
  2. When Sano enters the lineup, he’ll quickly add to the K rate. Astudillo out for awhile will curve it up as well. Sano figures to take at bats away from pretty much everyone with Marwin presumably used as a fill in all over.
  3. This offense is constructed as a feast or famine type. Lots of homerun power. Lots of strikeouts. Other than Astudillo, the best career obp on the roster coming into 2019 belonged to Nelson Cruz, and it was below .350. After that is Polanco, sub .333. Without HR this team is going to have an extremely difficult time scoring.
  4. Until this year, most of Garver’s starts were vs LHP. The current core of Twins, despite some big righty bats, has been bad vs lefty starters. I would also point out that the Twins have a better record with Astudillo behind the dish than Castro.
  5. How much are you willing to invest on a guy who, if Buxton continues to improve, could be hitting 8th or 9th? Pitching is still, by far, the greater need on this team. If Gordon doesn’t look like he will be ready in 2020 (even as a 9 hole hitter), I’m fine with another stopgap move simply because the bat doesn’t have to be that potent.
  6. I kinda think they did. The positions he plays all have regulars manning them that probably don’t need more than a couple days per month off and project to hit well enough that one would hope they wouldn’t need to be benched for that purpose. Gonzalez is an insurance policy against injury. It isn’t a coincidence that he was signed after the Twins medical staff got their first looks at Sano’s foot.
  7. idk, it seems to me that to make one start would be exactly the time to consider the small sample size of recency.
  8. Stewart has allowed more flyballs than groundballs this year. For their respective careers, Littell has a GO/AO ratio of 1.3. Stewart’s is 1.7.
  9. It’s up to his performance. Since he was brought up as the 26th man, I don’t think he would have to wait 10 days to come back. He’s given up 3 HR in 8 innings at AAA. Not exactly screaming “call me up”.
  10. Not sure I understand the logic of Stewart over Littell. Stewart’s first start of the year was good. The last two were terrible. By contrast, Littell’s first start was bad but his most recent two were pretty good. His last start was 5 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K.
  11. If Kimbrel is more worried about his legacy than winning games (something I seriously doubt), no one is going to touch him with a ten foot bat.
  12. It isn’t just the Twins. Since peaking in 2007, attendance across MLB is down over 4000 per game.
  13. The Twins need at least two more “good” bullpen arms. Maybe three. Whether that is May or Mejia improving, Reed and/or Magill helping or someone else. A team can’t contend with 3 reliable relievers in today’s game.
  14. Maybe if the Twins didn’t have to pay every hot dog vendor $15 per hour, they would be cheaper.
  15. The Twins need to decide how much they like Adalberto Mejia. He didn’t pitch today. He didn’t pitch in either game yesterday. Meanwhile, Hildenberger and Rogers threw at least 18 pitches both days. That’s how guys get overused. By not using guys that are there. The Twins need to keep sending him out there until Falvine decides to take him off the roster. Not using him is simply not an option.
  16. Rogers failed as a starter for two primary reasons: He couldn’t get RHB out. He couldn’t get guys out twice. So, he’s never going to face more than 9 hitters in an outing. And, if he throws 35-40 pitches in an outing, he would need at least two days off before pitching again. The kind of bullpen use you are suggesting is to some degree a throwback to the age of Gossage and Fingers in the 70s. They would come in for the starter in the 8th or even the 7th and usually finish the game. If the game got blown open they might get lifted for someone else. It’s not a bad idea except that you can’t just start that midseason at the MLB level. Relievers have been conditioned to be used a certain way for 30 years. You can’t change that overnight and expect them to perform at the same level.
  17. IL time definitely counts for MLB service time provided the player was on the active MLB roster when he was put on IL, which Sano was.
  18. Might have had something to do with playing a noon game the day after a rain delayed night game.
