Nick Gordon's management has been exceptional
bighat replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
It's interesting, over the past few Twins victories Gordon seems to be at the center of virtually every big play. Scoring the winning runs, flying home on a safety squeeze, stealing bases, hitting big home runs....the guy's just been EVERYWHERE. Emotionally he's becoming a leader and I am wondering if the Twins are going to start considering him over Larnach/Kirilloff as an everyday player next year. I know I would be for it. -
Aside from Buxton, there isn't anyone else on the team who is going to hit 20 HR this year. I'd take Reyes over Celestino and Garlick in a heartbeat, at least for the remainder of this year. This Twins bats are in a deep slump and I don't think this type of gamble would be the worst idea. I'd applaud of I saw the Twins make this move.

Great win. Nice to see Polanco showing up with a couple clutch hits. More of that, please! Thank goodness for Miranda and Gordon once again. I saw Miranda's season stats last night while watching the game, made me curious how he stacks up with the rest of the squad....this one stood out. Team RBI Leaders: Polanco 51 (88 games) Buxton 47 (81 games) Miranda 46 (70 games) Next three in line are Urshela, Kepler and Sanchez.....bringing up the rear we have Carlos Correa, who is 7th on the team with 37 RBI in 83 games played. On pace for what, 52 RBI this year with about 17 HR? At this point in his career he's a nice defender with an adequate bat. He might very well be darn happy to accept his option next year from the Twins, as Carlos hasn't done himself any favors this year. On a side note, the Twins are likely going to finish the year with their RBI leader having 75 RBI or something like that. Yeeps.

Twins have one big inning and can't add on - again. Contreras, Beckham, Gordon and Miranda drive in the runs without any help from the star players - again. 5-run lead isn't enough - again. Bullpen blows the save - again. Baserunning blunders and fundamental mistakes - again. You get a feeling that if this game was played on the road the Twins would have blown it. Always good to get a win but this game clearly highlighted all of Minnesota's weaknesses. I've never seen a Twins team that's in a pennant race behave so casually when it comes to fundamentals. Still waiting on the big names on the roster to show up.

Game Thread: Twins v Blue Jays, 8/5/22 @ 7:10pm Local Time

Aside from a few growing pains - which should be expected for a guy playing his first full year in the bigs - I've been really, really happy with how Gordon has played this year. -

I'll say it: Correa's had a disappointing year. I don't know about anyone else here, but I expected more. Houston is a band box, and Correa was benefitting from playing in perhaps the best hitter's park outside of NYY. He's good, but not as good as advertised that's for sure. -

Yep, a lot of pop ups, his launch angle is out of whack right now. -

Twins are in an August pennant race, watching a winnable division title slowly slip away....and instead of putting the pedal to the metal, we get Mark Contreras and Jake Cave every night in the OF. It's downright embarrassing and frankly I don't see how anyone still expects this team to qualify for the post season. On paper this matchup looks like a bloodbath. How are we going to feel if this team gets swept at home in a 4 game series after trading away Spencer Steer and Encarnacion-Strand? Good grief, this organization is frustrating to root for sometimes. That said, Go Twins. -
Wow. If I recall correctly, his first ever appearance he was bludgeoned by the Blue Jays in Toronto. His last game as a Twin, mashed by the Blue Jays again. Most of the games in between were good, thanks for the service to the Twins, Tyler. I'm sure he'll catch on somewhere else and be in another team's uniform shortly. Twins need to cut Pagan as well, I see him as worse than Duffey. EDIT: Holy smokes the Twins are replacing Duffey with Cole Sands?!?!! Is it possible the bullpen just got worse?

Blue Jays 9, Twins 3: Blue Jays Crush Twins
bighat replied to Theo Tollefson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Polanco since the All-Star break is 7-36 (.194) while Correa is 7-39 (.179). I think it's safe to say Correa's season stats have certainly fallen short of my expectations. It's August, the division is up for grabs, the team is fading....it's now or never. And we're all sitting here waiting. Somebody, do something. Twins now 5-6 since the All Star Game, with 4 of those wins coming against Detroit. -

I don't think so. I followed him last year in Cincy and I don't recall any meltdowns like this. It's incredibly frustrating to watch. I know he was terrible in New York though, so maybe that's something he dealt with in the past.... -
Will Alex Kirilloff Ever Truly Recover?
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Kirilloff finishes his career with the same numbers as Jason Kublel, I'd consider that a huge accomplishment. Let's hope AK gets healthy or his numbers will end up looking similar to those of Chris Parmalee's career. -
I think they did OK. We have to remember that here in 2022, Mahle is going to probably only pitch in - at most - 10 games for this team. If the Twins go 5-5 during those games, do we consider this a good trade? Getting him for next year is great, but in order for this to be a good trade for 2022, we're going to need Mahle to go 6-7 innings per start and the Twins need to go 7-3 or 8-2 when he is on the mound. Is that realistic? The bullpen guys I'm fine with, good additions, same goes for the catcher. Honestly I think the Twins (and many fans) are denying the problems that this team has on offense. Of course, the pitching has been so horrific that it's hard to blame anyone for that. But I really think to have a chance at a successful season, the Twins needed to add a bat and they didn't do it. And they probably couldn't do it, because they have nobody left to trade. Grade: C

Twins 3, Tigers 5: Big Day Ends in Loss to Tigers
bighat replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great post, especially this part. Last night the Twins got 2 RBI from Nick Gordon and a HR from Mark Contreras. The day before it was Jose Miranda. Where the heck is everyone else? I mentioned in a post on yesterday's game thread that Arraez, Buxton, Correa and Polanco absolutely have to start carrying this team. Polanco's batting .237 now and has gone ice cold, Buxton's not even playing, and Correa & Arraez are sprinkling in a few hits & walks here and there but nobody's catching fire. All the pitching in the world won't help unless this team can score runs. They've been shut out more times than any other team in baseball, which is a very scary statistic no matter how their offense stacks up on paper.- 34 replies

Helluva gamble there by Arraez, make 'em throw it. They know that Baddoo has a bad arm and not very accurate. Great job being aggressive! -

Urshela is sooo slow - another GIDP for that guy. Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols are the only other two guys in the league that would have been doubled up there. Twins gotta get more aggressive when they have a guy on 1st and Gio is up, would have been better to watch Gordon at least try and steal there. -
Twins Acquire Catcher Sandy Leon from Guardians

Twins Acquire Tyler Mahle from Reds
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ooof. Steer and Hajjar would have been OK, but losing Encarnacion-Strand also is a real punch in the gut. I was hoping other teams were asleep on his incredible rise through the system, but of course they weren't. As others have said, you gotta give up something to get something. So here we are. Hope this Mahle guy can pitch 7 innings because we still need bullpen help! -
Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
bighat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I recall, Sam Dyson was very good the year the Twins acquired him, but had been pretty average before that. Let's hope this isn't a repeat. Considering what was out there, and what they gave up, I like this move for the Twins.- 114 replies

Yeah, as mentioned in the comment above the Twins are in a real tough place if they don't want to deal Lewis or Miranda. I doubt the Twins land anyone noteworthy, probably a few no-name bullpen guys if anything. They really are between a rock and a hard place and I just don't see them having anything worth giving the Reds for Mahle.

Nice game by Sanchez. Guy had just an amazing year way back in 2016 with a 15-2 record and a 3.00 ERA. If he can dig down and find any remaining magic in that arm, now's the time. Twins are still limping since the break with a 4-4 record, but would probably be 2-6 if it weren't for Jose Miranda. It would be nice if guys like Buxton, Correa, Polanco and Arraez were carrying this team in August - gonna be pretty hard to make the playoffs if those guys don't get hot. And by "get hot" I mean something like an 8 game hitting streak, with games that include multiple hits and a few bombs sprinkled in. Going 2-for-4 with a HR and then going hitless for the next 4 games isn't enough. These guys are all All-Stars, somebody needs to step up before this thing gets away from them. I had a dream that the Twins traded Dylan Bundy to the White Sox. Doesn't make much sense, but dreams rarely do!
